Ryan and Thomas both had incredible seasons with the Jays... I don't think I'd call them dumb signings.

Thomas signed as a 39 year old for $18 million / 2 years with a vesting option for a 3rd year. This was in 2006. He had historically bad defensive and baserunning value, so he had to hit like crazy both years just to break even. He put up 1.5 WAR for 18 million. That's negative value in 2021 dollars. That contract had huge downside the day it was signed.

BJ Ryan was an elite closer in his prime at 30 when he signed. His contract was $47 million / 5 years in 2006 dollars, the largest reliever contract in MLB history. You can say the injuries were bad luck, but this was a very obvious possibility from the moment it was signed, particularly for a reliever.

Both contracts provided huge negative value and were highly possible outcomes from the day they were signed.

You shut your filthy whore mouth... Thomas is one of the few guys from that era (particularly the big dudes) that nobody ever accused of juicing...

That dude was just too massive of a human being for me to not be suspicious. Although I thought Palmeiro would have been the last person to take roids so I dont have the best eye for this lol.

Yeah it’s all a guessing game based on personality and little else. Not all steroids make you big either, plenty will make you a lot stronger without weight gain, including athlete favorite Winstrol. Back then when it was widespread and legal, I’d wager there’d be a ton of names you could drop that’d you be like “no way”

We received RHP Paxton Schultz as the PTBNL in the Derek Fisher trade. A 14th round pick in 2019, he has barely pitched in affiliated ball.

All he has to do is play and ensure a pop up doesn't go off his head and we win this trade.

Frank Thomas could probably bench press two of you sitting at each end of a barbell when he was 14 years old. The man was always massive even when he first came on the scene. The cheating he did was called DNA.

Ken Dayley

Signed for 3 years/ 6.3m. ended up pitching 4.1 innings.

Without Googling I think Bill Caudill was a bad signing. Adjusting for current dollars it was a huge contract at the time.

He was also Tom Sellick's replacement in Mr. Baseball. A must watch if you haven't.

Yeah..."Cuffs" Caudill sure handcuffed the Jays with his contract!

Was Tom Candiotti a free agent?....(life lesson...stay away from knuckleballers)

Kirk and Milone to the IL... Stripling starting today, I'd assume Adams will be up.

Jays need to address Biggio situation. This is a guy who for much of 2019 had lowest chase rate in MLB. 3rd in BB. 2nd in hard contact MLB. The asset is being destroyed set up to fail. Totally lost at the plate. There is little doubt that he taking the D issues up to the dish. Watched an interview with Edwin who said the E-5 issues almost ended his career as he couldn’t focus on what he did well - hit. Love to see him planted at 2B and Marcus at 3B.

Just when the end was in sight for the every day Jansen s***-show situation... he should buy Kirk a nice bottle of scotch or something.

Too bad for Kirk and us. Looked like he was really finding it at the plate the last few games.

Man that sucks... Kirk gets hurt right when he hits 2 bombs. At least we get Stripling back to hopefully chew up some innings.

I am a little more concerned that we will be going 0-for at the catcher position for the foreseeable future.

Danny has new glasses coming. He will turn it around.

He actually looked pretty good at the leadoff spot. Don't have the numbers but I'd guess those looked very similar to his short career samples.

I think his placement in the lineup is also contributing to his sucking. We have been putting him in the middle of our lineup for some reason like he is a run producer. Since he can't bat leadoff for us, we should stick him near the bottom where he can hopefully replicate a similar approach to when he bats leadoff.

The fact the Braves walked him yesterday to get to one of our best hitters all season tells you how dumb that move was lol.

Ask Kendrick Morales how that worked out for him lol.

Thomas was huge before, during, and after his playing career. He also fought for testing at the height of the steroid era.

All very different from Bonds' transformation and attitude

Some of the dumbest signings in team history:

Kendrys Morales

I can't call the Morales signing one of the worst in franchise history because it directly lead to getting Gurriel on an insane contract. It also resulted in/coincided with them pulling out on Edwin, which netted them the compensation pick that got them Nate Pearson.

The Morales signing was s*** in a vacuum but it was really good for the franchise overall, from a butterfly effect perspective.

It's also possible Edwin helps us win 2 more games or so, which means we still miss out on the playoffs but are back ~4 spots in the draft. Maybe we don't end up with Groshans.

That's not really how to evaluate transactions, especially since the Gurriel package thing is a rumour that has never been substantively reported outside of this forum.

And attributing Pearson's value to Morales because he took away the financial/roster flexibility to resign Edwin is kind of silly.

Not hating on your post, Morales was just an absolute surplus black hole. The worst part of it wasn't even the money or the on-field performance. Three years of an MLB roster slot for a DH that can't hit just hemorrhages value from a pure roster management standpoint.

Randal Grichuk past 81 games (start of 2020):

.281/.321/.487, 122 OPS+, 20.4% K%

before that:

.244/.293/.483, 105 OPS+, 28.3% K%

The K% drop is pretty staggering. Hopefully he can keep it up. Always said, Grichuk could be valuable if he got his K% to a decent range combined with his defense. It's played out like that the past half seasons worth of PA's.
