GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 I don't agree with your opinion that we only signed Semien because we lost out on Brantley. Their pursuit of a DH was independent of their search for a 3B. We weren't going to roll with Espinal/Vlad at 3B. Trading an outfielder for a pitcher and signing someone is probably still on the table, despite your insistence that it is not. I have to agree with Spanky on this one

Ex Player Verified Member Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 Liriano didnt pitch at all in 2020 (at least not in North-America): https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/liriafr01.shtml He's only a ST invitee, so its not a bad move I guess. Maybe he can still be useful as a mop-up guy??

Laika Community Moderator Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 Let's see what he's got first. Maybe he could be an Andrew Miller type. ?????? You know Liriano is 37, right? And he was a full time reliever in 2019... There's a chance he has stayed in shape and the fastball is still there. He could be a decent backend or middle RP.
Eat My Shatkins Verified Member Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 They're just tossing mud against the wall to see what sticks. If they want Kay starting in AAA, and Ray starting in the show, then Borucki is the only left handed reliever on the 40 man. Hopefully at least one of Mayza or Liriano show they are good enough to warrant a spot so they can have some high leverage left handed options out of the pen. Too bad they couldn't get Hand to sign.

Every day on BJMB someone refers to some random reliever as a possible Andrew Miller type.

Maybe he can still be useful as a mop-up guy?? It's 100% impossible for a minor league w/ spring training invite signing to be bad. I mean, I suppose there's a possible, theoretical signing that could end up being bad if you somehow hired a 5 year old to draft the contract, and it was for a guaranteed forfteen bajillion dollerz and that somehow held up in court... But Dave Stewart isn't a GM anymore...
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 Our interest in Yadier Molina is a little puzzling to me. He's looking for a full time gig, which we can't really offer. His path to playing time is far clearer in St. Louis.

His path to playing time is far clearer in St. Louis. Maybe at this stage in his career he wants ro win more and perhaps that's the selling point from Toronto's perspective. I think this also means that Toronto wants Kirk to get everyday ABs in AAA this season.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 Or maybe, as I'm just thinking about it now, they are signing Molina, and exploring trades for one of Jansen/Kirk/Moreno for their #2 SP? Hmmm, if only we were privy to the machinations going on.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted February 3, 2021 Posted February 3, 2021 I'm not reading anything into this rumour myself. It's just Jon the pawn shilling for the agents, I'm sure.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 I only posted the ST invite If he got an ST invite the minor league deal is kind of implied if not downright assumed. You think the Jays management just told him "hey Francisco, feel free to come on down to Dunedin and hang out with the boys"? Of course he signed a minor league deal. He's a NRI to ST, there's literally no other contract he could have signed for this to be the case.

That happens when management wants to wait and see what their stuff is like during ST before committing to a MiLB contract

That happens when management wants to wait and see what their stuff is like during ST before committing to a MiLB contract I suppose that would be more likely for undrafted players with no track record mostly? I would imagine MLB veterans like Liriano or King Felix would pretty much always have a guaranteed contract of some kind of they wouldn't accept...
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted February 4, 2021 Posted February 4, 2021 let's move on people. Not until we get the terms of the minor league deal. If there was a $10k signing bonus in there I’d like to know
