Crusty f***. Interesting moments for me included Shapiro saying there really was no hard upper limit to future Jays payrolls. Somewhat dispiriting however was the mention from the same Mark Shapiro stating the heavy lifting for the offseason was finished. This team could really use another decent starter or two, hopefully they find the way to squeeze that into whatever remaining budget they have left over.

Yeah, not a perfect analogy but it’s like an NFL team that has a high powered offense but really s***** defense. If they go out and sign a 3rd or 4th WR with really huge upside it’s definitely an upgrade for the team but if you aren’t going to sign that really good LB that’s available, maybe not the best move. I think that’s all the nay sayers are bringing up.

Saying the heavy lifting is done means they are not done.

Saying the heavy lifting is done might mean they aren't going to sign Trevor Bauer, but no free agent SP after Bauer would really be considered a heavy lift.

Mark Shapiro is a pro at saying exactly the right thing without giving anything away. One could easily interpret him saying the heavy lifting is done as meaning no more 9 figure contracts are being handed out. So probably no Bauer, cool. Keep in mind at the time of this press conference the Semien signing isn't even official and I'd classify that as "heavy lifting". I'm positive the team is exploring several avenues to address the rotation still, it may not come in the form of a free agent but there's bound to be a trade in the works if they can't land an Odorizzi/Paxton.

Yes, I'm thinking high likelihood a trade for a 1-2 caliber starter either pre-season or at the deadline...

Could also mean they've had all the major conversations with Bauer, or other pitching targets (FA or trade), have made an offer and are waiting to see if they accept it or not.

The comment is certainly open to interpretation. Within the same answer he also mentioned that the Jays could get creative with finding opportunities to continue adding to the roster, which also makes it sound like available payroll may be a bit scarce at this point.

Cool - I don't know if everyone knows this, but Springer stutters; however, where most will avoid public speaking like the plague (to avoid the embarrassment), Springer tries to advocate for those with speech impediments. I think he's part of a national speech impediment organization too. I struggled with stuttering from like Grade 5 through the early part of high school. It's horrible. I managed to overcome it; however, I have notice it creeping back over the past year or so. Just thought I'd share.

I wouldn't be mad, but huge risk. I guess that'd be on par with the Yankee/Taillon gamble, save for the prospect capita...

I didn't - I just f***ing struggled through it and learned to deal with it. Eventually it went away and I was all good....until recently. 20 f***ing years later and suddenly it's come back when I'm talking to people I'm not overly comfortable with. Super awesome stuff. Kind of crazy that 4 regulars here all dealt with it. It makes me gravitate to Springer even more as a fan.

Yes, for a number of years I avoided public talking to avoid embarrassed and being laughed at. But I have learned to turn a negative into a positive in my late teens into my 20s when I was single. 3 of my friends and myself were out at a pickup bar and we noticed a gorgeous woman (think Linda Ronstadt or Marie Osmond) who was spurning all the advances from the guys. We placed bets which one of us could get her up for a dance. My buddies who were quite the ladies men also struck out. I bet them 20 dollars a piece that I could get a dance out of her. I went up to her and my stuttering was terrible but I did manage to eventually ask her to dance. She felt so bad for me she replied back "I would love to" !!!.....haha Now my stuttering only pops up when answering the phone or when ordering thru a speaker system at a drive thru. I also know what "key words" to avoid.
