glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2021 Posted December 24, 2021 Another voter who should lose their voting privileges. You can tell he’s a coward by writing his name as Michael. He damn well knows he’s Mike Hunt but he’s too gutless to embrace it. No wonder his ballot is blank.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 24, 2021 Posted December 24, 2021 I don't get the narrative around this. With Buxton locked up maybe the Twins think Martin is expendable now? Maybe they figured they couldn't extend Berrios? Might as well bitch at this team for dealing Stroman then turning around and dealing the better half of that haul for Berrios.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 24, 2021 Posted December 24, 2021 it's just speculation Hopping to the AL Central, where the Twins are dealing with a rare prospect surplus on the heels of their Byron Buxton extension. Writing for The Athletic, Dan Hayes and Aaron Gleeman discuss whether top shortstop/center field prospect Austin Martin can be flipped to acquire a pitcher that will help a Twins rotation short on experience. It would be a short stay in the Minnesota system for Martin, a top-30 prospect who was just acquired in July’s Jose Berrios deal, if he’s dealt. Hayes reasons that the Twins have a dire need for pitching, and speculates that acquiring Luis Castillo or Tyler Mahle of the Reds, or Frankie Montas of the A’s would provide a more immediate benefit to a team looking to contend. Neither writer is convinced Martin should be traded, considering the two players ahead of him on the depth chart (Buxton in center field and top-30 prospect Royce Lewis at shortstop) are hardly locks to stay healthy or productive. Still, with the Twins surprising inactivity in the free agent pitching market, both writers agree a lot of work needs to be done to have the pitching staff match a strong position player group.

wamco Verified Member Posted December 25, 2021 Posted December 25, 2021 Another voter who should lose their voting privileges. Seems like he doesn’t vote for PED guys and doesn’t see the remaining as worthy. Schilling is the top guy and even tho I put him in, it isn’t egregious Nothing to see here

Schilling is the top guy and even tho I put him in, it isn’t egregious Nothing to see here I'd argue that Rolen is clearly the top guy as a top 10 player (by fWAR) at the least represented position in the Hall. Not voting for him is inexplicable.
wamco Verified Member Posted December 25, 2021 Posted December 25, 2021 Yet after 4 votes he is at 53 percent so you can’t single this one guy out when half the voters also didn’t see him as worthy . He is on my board.i like the 2 way players like rolen and Edmonds more than most. Schilling rolen Kent.

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 29, 2021 Posted December 29, 2021 I respect when players go out while still competent and don't spend years kicking around on MiLB deals and ST invites.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2021 Posted December 29, 2021 (edited) Well there goes one possible third base option for the Jays for next season. Although I was lukewarm on him as a possibility as he might not have been much of an upgrade compared to the players already on the roster. Edited December 29, 2021 by max silver
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2021 Posted December 29, 2021 Wow that seems odd. Still playes good D and can hit for league average wRC+.... and only 34 years old. Would have loved to have him on the Jays for a season or two, but maybe no teams were offering him a guaranteed starting job
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 29, 2021 Posted December 29, 2021 I respect when players go out while still competent and don't spend years kicking around on MiLB deals and ST invites. Why?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 Why? I don’t get it either for the most part but I guess it depends on his reasoning. He was still an average bat with plus D, maybe he just wants to be there for his kids formative years. If that’s the case… power to him. If it were me, you’d have to tear the jersey off my back and ban me from every stadium to keep me from trying to keep playing.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 It does seem like particularly weird timing during the lockout where no team can even negotiate with him so he can at least find his price. Doesn't hurt to sign a one year contract with a contender.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 Every time I think something like "that old guy should just retire, he's replacement level now" I remind myself that it's not all about the WARz. https://www.mlb.com/video/stairs-two-run-moon-shot-c3618349
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 Why? Because it makes me sad to see players who used to be good trying and failing to keep it going. I like the aesthetics of a career arc like Seager's that doesn't have bad years at the end.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2021 Posted December 30, 2021 Seager could be banged up, and just tired of the grind at this point. He's made more than enough in his career to take care of his family for at least the next few generations, so a few more years of paydays might not be worth as much as time with that family.
