Laika Community Moderator Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 Rough. At a certain point though, you gotta stop saying its “bad luck”. Some people have weaker bodies than others. Yeah he plays incredibly hard and has explosive athleticism, but his frame is not exactly robust. 6'2" 190 compared to, say, a tank like Mike Trout at 6'2" 235
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 ... He got hit in the hand by a pitch. Yeah and what im saying is a lot of other guys could probably get hit in the hand and not break any bones... it’s possible for some people to have more brittle bones. Some people broke their arms 5 times as a child and some have never broken a bone.

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 Well f*** Why is Buxton not wearing all the latest protective gear

Some people broke their arms 5 times as a child and some have never broken a bone. Some people might not get in the hand because they have better protective reflexes. I remember when I first saw Jose Reyes in 2013 I couldn't believe how aggressive he was on the bases, and it seemed obvious to me he was an injury waiting to happen. Seemed obvious he had no protective reflexes and was happy to dive in like crazy... lol I'm probably full of it, and it's just that serious injuries happen on average 4 or 5 times in a long career so by random chance some guys get 10 and some 1....

Laika Community Moderator Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 What’s Tulo’s excuse? Too big for shortstop, just like everyone said when he was a prospect. I guess.

One of his clients was Jozy Altidore who is built like a tank, but notorious for soft tissue injuries. This therapist and his colleagues are elite in their industry and none of them could fix what was wrong with Altidore. In fact they couldn't even identify the cause, on multiple occasions they pinpointed different areas and trained and treated it only for other issues to pop up. All of which is to say that some dudes are just fragile.

Scion Verified Member Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 I suspect that many athletes with recurring injury histories suffer from structural imbalances and/or inefficient body mechanics. People obsess over pitching mechanics because of the volatility and attrition rate of the position, but the same kinds of problems can plague position players too. For example, a runner with externally rotated hips is at an increased risk of groin injury. This is a relatively easy thing to diagnose but very hard to change, particularly among athletes whose movements and coordination are extremely patterned. A much harder to detect example is poor glute activation, someone who suffers from this is at considerable risk of lower back, hip or groin injury because of their inability to activate their glutes which creates an over-reliance on different muscles.

A lot of people have hypothesized that their diet has a lot to do with it (raw veganism) but they have a f***ing hideous injury record. No way it's just coincidental. And that's from three years ago. Not sure if they've added to that endless suffering since.
Scion Verified Member Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 This is Byron Buxton's injury history in the Majors. This goes beyond being injury prone, poor guy just looks broken. If I were the Twins I would strongly consider moving him to 1B/DH. I know that sounds crazy because of his defensive value in CF, but he has proven that he cannot stay on the field and the bat may be good enough to carve out a legitimate role as an offense only player. 2015: Sprained left thumb 2016: Knee contusion/back spasms 2017: Groin strain/migraines 2018: Migraines/fractured toe/strained wrist 2019: Wrist contusion/concussion/left shoulder dislocation/labrum surgery 2020: Left foot strain 2021: Hip Strain/Hamstring tightness/left hand fracture

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 If bone density was an issue I doubt very much that Buxton would have progressed this far as an athlete. It obviously has to be an issue for some guys though right? Like how did Tulo break his damn shoulder on a seemingly insignificant collision with Pillar's face? Speaking of Pillar, how the hell did he take a fastball straight to the face and come out of it fairly well? Funny too since he's basically know for being a tank but he injured his oblique from a SNEEZE in his rookie year w the Jays. Maybe that was a lie by the FO though... Anyways my main point was that idk how you can say Buxton is "unlucky" when he gets injured like 3 times a year. Plenty of players are fine after getting hit on the hand. It doesn't surprise me that Buxton got injured from a HBP. I also wouldn't be surprised if Stanton got hit in the arm and fractured something.

But in the same way they have godly athletic genes, they can have things that make them more predisposed to certain injuries. That's all im trying to say about Buxton.

Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 Found this on the Twins' subreddit, on the Buxton injury: Typically, the fracture associated with a Boxer's fracture takes about six weeks to heal, and another six weeks to get back to the strength and range of motion that you had prior to the injury that led to the condition. Woof. Probably out til September then?

Never seen another athlete more made of glass. And of course in typical Jays fashion, he started his stint with a freak accident where he tore his meniscus by tripping on a sprinkler head. That is crazy, how can anyone have 5 ACL tears? Not even the same knee. She had two in one knee and three in another. Their family's physiology is disgusting.

Which is like vegan extremism: "What is a raw vegan diet? Raw veganism is a subset of veganism. Like veganism, it excludes all foods of animal origin. Then it adds the concept or raw foodism, which dictates that foods should be eaten completely raw or heated at temperatures below 104–118°F (40–48°C)." Not sure if their diet had anything to do with their conditioning and durability and whether they're all still on it, I just know a lot of people tied those things together when the horror stories about the family injury history started coming out.
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 22, 2021 Posted June 22, 2021 All-Star voting update just dropped. Vladdy is miles ahead of everyone else in baseball in voting. Semien is building a lead at 2B and Bichette is out of the running at SS. Grichuk and Hernandez are hanging around in the OF. If Trout can't play and Hernandez can make up the 100K vote difference between 5th and 4th, he'll probably start. If he can't make up that ground, he's basically out unless Judge or Buxton get injured, which is always a possibility. Sorry Byron. Didn't mean to do it to ya. The hand injury makes Teoscar a favorite for a starting OF spot in the All-Star game. Hopefully Jays fans vote him in because the guy behind him is Michael Brantley and f*** the Astros.

Damn, poor guy was probably wishing it was a nightmare, the boxer break is when the front of your knuckle breaks and gets shoved back in your hand, basically.
