BTS Community Moderator Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 Really not interesting in Wade Miley throwing a no-hitter.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 4 no hitters now (5 if you count MadBum) in the first week of May, and Manaea has one through 7 tonight. I can only assume the deadening of the baseballs was to make it easier to justify all those changes they want to make (moving the mound back, etc), but when Wade Miley throws a NH, man.
Scion Verified Member Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 Sean Manea has no hits through 7. Have there ever been two no nos on the same day?
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 Sean Manea has no hits through 7. Have there ever been two no nos on the same day? I think it's happened twice. There's also been several games in the minors where BOTH teams threw no hitters in the same game.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 Holy s*** - that is hard to fathom. Meh. It’s actually not that surprising at all. Griffey was good for 4 WAR from 31 on.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 So the latter examples ended in ties one is to assume? I would assume some combination of walks, stolen bases, and/or errors. I haven't looked the games up though, so I suppose some weird tie rules could be possible.
BTS Community Moderator Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 Wade Miley has put the final nail in the coffin of the the importance of no-hitters. Some shitbag throws one every week

BTS Community Moderator Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 Durham Bulls twitter account is absolutely savage
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 The Durham Bulls will forever be entrenched in my brain since that immaculate movie.
King Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 Is it just me, or has the umpiring been absolutely atrocious this year? I feel like every game I watch has at least one or two blatantly terrible, blown calls.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 Wade Miley has put the final nail in the coffin of the the importance of no-hitters. Some shitbag throws one every week Yeah when I saw Miley was throwing one, I had no interest in seeing the final out at all, and I typically always like seeing the final outs of no hitters or perfect games. It might have officially jumped the shark with him. As I said above, the league wants to do things to increase BIP like move the mound back + they want robo umps. So they deaden the baseball so that offense around the league resembles the dead ball era and umpires are increasing the size of the strike zone to almost comical levels. My tinfoil hat is firmly in place.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 lol... Jesus! For context... O'Neill and Lindor tussle in the tunnel...
King Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 https://blogs.fangraphs.com/where-did-the-homers-go/ This is kind of crazy. They are actively ruining the sport. It's impressive that they got this so wrong. They basically increased the number of strikeouts and made a s*** ton of flyballs turn into outs. That 31% decrease in 95-99 EV/20-24 LA reaching base is shocking.

King Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 Manfred trying to end Cavan Biggio's career? Good point. It looks like he went from being an above average hitter to an avg/below average hitter with one swift change of the ball. Disgusting. I wonder who else was heavily affected by this. Lindor? Gurriel? Edit: I did a quick statcast query. Gurriel has three between 95/99 and 20-24 and all of them were lineouts. https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/statcast_search?hfPT=&hfAB=&hfGT=R%7C&hfPR=&hfZ=&stadium=&hfBBL=&hfNewZones=&hfPull=&hfC=&hfSea=2021%7C&hfSit=&player_type=batter&hfOuts=&opponent=&pitcher_throws=&batter_stands=&hfSA=&game_date_gt=&game_date_lt=&hfInfield=&team=&position=&hfOutfield=&hfRO=&home_road=&hfFlag=&hfBBT=&metric_1=api_h_launch_angle&metric_1_gt=20&metric_1_lt=24&metric_2=api_h_launch_speed&metric_2_gt=95&metric_2_lt=99&hfInn=&min_pitches=0&min_results=0&group_by=name&sort_col=pitches&player_event_sort=api_p_release_speed&sort_order=desc&min_pas=0#results
BTS Community Moderator Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 Manfred is handling this like a sim league. Ham-fistedly tweaking the sliders trying to get the desired results and not spending enough time thinking about unintended consequences.

He attempted to fix what wasn't broken and ended up f***ing up his best asset at the plate, namely his walk rate and high on base percentage. His new "aggressive" approach has him chasing far more pitches out of the strike zone and subsequently walking less and striking out a lot more. He also stopped barreling up baseballs completely, can't blame the new ball for any of this.

I don't think it's a stretch to say that his flyballs that were previously homers are now turning into outs is a massive problem. The chase rate looks like a problem too. They can co-exist, Max.

His expected stats basically line up with his actual stats. XWOBA and WOBA are within 14 points of each other, xHR is 1.5 vs actual of 2, and he's produced all of 1 barrel up to this point. He simply hasn't produced the quality of contact that would allow for his production to be where it was previously. He's looked much better at the plate recently, but his recent hits are basically all singles as he's been punching balls to left field a lot lately.

I just don't think you can complete write off the ball change for affecting his output. The truth is probably a culmination of all these things affecting his hitting. I agree with what you are saying and think it has merit.

Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted May 8, 2021 Posted May 8, 2021 Max Scherzer sets the new Yankee Stadium record with 14 strikeouts, achieved in 7 innings. He'll be coming back out for the 8th. Where's that guy that said he was done after one poor outing?
