However, a team that does would take the risk of falling behind. I am sure there are good statistics to back up the pursuit of high octane arms.

 

I often wonder if there are guys who could do Kyle Hendricks things but never really get a fair shake, or if baseball actually does a good job finding the guys who have the skill set to get by on low velo.

It would be nice for sports science to advance to the point where based on testing, it can estimate a safe velocity for a pitcher. Those guys without the arm to throw gas can focus on pitch mix / command.

 

Many of the guys throwing 97-98 will crash and burn within 5 years, when throwing 94-95 they can have a good 10-12 year career.

Not every arm is built the same. If they were, everyone would be throwing 103 like Chapman.

They can already measure stress on the arm in a variety of ways. So this is already possible.

 

The "problem" is that the majority of players are just ngmi if they don't throw as hard as possible. The safe velocity zone is the same as the "have a nice career overseas" zone.

 

Velocity training can also be a way to make you more resilient as a pitcher and keep you healthier. If done right. I mean it's just strength, flexibility, proper mechanics, and repeating your mechanics, and throwing with your whole body. There is a reason that some of the historic SP flamethrowers have been very resilient and healthy. There are current models for this too, guys who increase their velocity (or maintain it as they age) and get better and stay healthier.

Nah, his pitch count was super high in that first inning, that was an avoid injury situation, he was sitting on the bench watching video of himself during the 2nd inning.

Or teams will have to start signing guys who don't throw max effort. The Buehrle and Moyer types may not be exciting, but they didn't break down either.
