I think everyone knew this was coming once the other SS went off market. Phillies were scared if they didn't act fast the music would stop and they would be left without a chair.

Yes

 

They added quite a few potentials already. Some for sure relived some on mIlb contracts with a chance to make the MLB bullpen

yeah that's fair - I was drawing a complete blank on anyone who left Colorado and maintained his production....not many have. Holliday did and DJLH somehow went from league average to one of the best hitters in baseball.

But is the contract still 35 per with the Rockies paying 50 mill of it. That's what makes the trade for the Cards a good one no?

The part that can make it bad are the player options. If he sucks, he won't use it and if he plays great, there is a chance he opts out and leaves for almost nothing.

 

The fact he added a player option in 2022 means he intends to probably opt out there and skip next seasons stacked FA class. That part of it makes it a lose/lose but getting 2 years of prime Arenado for what they gave up is easily worth the risk imo.

And Turner? Even Arod transitioned there but you know... the roids...

 

After 1B, 3B requires the least amount of mobility on the diamond, which is why guys can play there at an older age. You just need your reflexes to be spot on, which is why we call it the hot corner.

Just me but once the bat gets in the 110ish territory, I’d rather just look to plug it with short term deals like Didi, Semein, etc (while waiting for prospects in the near future) rather than be locked in mega contract

I tend to agree unless you consider the player generational (Trout/Betts/etc) Being locked into bad long term contracts is franchise crippling.

 

It's something I can respect of Shatkins. They are financially smart even if it can piss me off when we don't spend lol.

Larry Walker left Coors and as a broken down 37 and 38 year who had had 8 major surgeries in his career he put up an OPS north of 900 in his final 144 games in St Louis. He did this playing with a bad neck in the 2nd season where he basically could only move his head one direction. Walker also had 200 point better home OPS playing in St. Louis vs the road because travel is hard as f*** on players playing hurt. Larry was the man though!

MLB Issues 154-Game Proposal To Players

MLB and the Players’ Union continue to haggle over conditions and rules for the upcoming season. On Friday, MLB made another attempt to find an acceptable solution, submitting a proposal to the MLBPA for a 154-game season without prorating player pay, per Tim Brown of Yahoo Sports (via Twitter). The proposal also includes delaying the season by a month and expanding playoffs. Joel Sherman of the New York Post adds that the universal designated hitter is also included in this offer. The MLBPA leadership are mulling the offer this weekend.

 

As it sounds, this deal has everything both sides want: full season pay for the players, expanded playoffs for the owners, and a delayed start for the health and safety of everyone involved. These are the basic conditions that we’ve been heading for all along, or so it has seemed. After all, while MLB has never been in favor of pushing the playoffs deep into November, this year there is a particular benefit to pushing the season in that direction. It would almost certainly mean a greater number of participants – and fans – having been vaccinated against COVID-19. November baseball may be colder, but it’s almost certain to be safer as well.

 

And yet, for the players, there are still some long-term implications that could prevent them from simply signing on the dotted line. As noted by the Athletic’s Eno Sarris (via Twitter), caving on expanded postseason gives the players very little leverage to carry with them into the CBA negotiations at the end of the 2021 season.

I think the last line Ehjays posted explains that perfectly. They lose leverage in the CBA negotiations next year. Somewhere along the line, both sides have become more consumed with their positions than with the game.
