Is he even worth the roster spot on a team that intends to compete? I don't like the idea of the Jays giving a spot to a guy who's averaged 30 innings per season the last three years, they need to get better production out of their rotation this season.

I won’t argue against this point. I personally just like Shoe better than some of our other backend options but understand they’re already here.

Remarkable how many big "name" free agent SPs there are, though most of them just aren't very good any more...

Heck, isn't Felix Hernandez also available and trying to pitch this year?

Mike Rizzo must be a sucker for those late night TV commercials where you can buy stuff with 3-5 "easy payments" rather than have to come up with like 200 bucks for a vacuum cleaner all at once...

The Philadelphia Phillies and JT Realmuto are in agreement on a 5 year $115.5 million dollar contract. Pending physical. Per source.

Yikes, that is a lot of money. I like Realmuto but I'd respectfully pass on those terms if that's what it took for us to land him, let alone having to outbid it.

I wonder if there was other serious competition for his service or the Phillies just caved in to his agent's demands. Classic Dombrowski contract.

LOL this tops the Joe Mauer deal by AAV. Joe Mauer signed his deal in early 2010 so he would've been coming off 6.4 and 8.4 WAR seasons and the deal would commence in his age 28 season.

Buster Posey deal: signed in early 2013, coming off A 10 WAR SEASON, beginning in his AGE 26 SEASON.

Dombrowski got taken to the cleaners by Realmuto's agent.

Can we really talk about contracts when we just gave up 6/150 to Springer? Seems like a fair deal for the most part for the level of talent he is. He's 2 years younger and getting one less year so he'll be there for all his prime years.

Springer is a better player tbf.

I'm not saying he isn't but the Phillies will have Realmuto until he's 33/34 while we'll have Springer until he's 36/37. Was just trying to give some context to the deal. Not bad at all for the best catcher in the business.

Realmuto contract seems fair for both sides

Agreed. I have no problem with it for Philly.

More on Realmuto's contract, per sources:

Of his $20M salary for 2021, half is deferred to help #Phillies with pandemic cash-flow issues.

He'd then earn the same amount ($23.875M) in each of the final 4 years.

He's a catcher with good but unexceptional hitting, good but unexceptional defense, and elite baserunning (for a catcher). Similarly talented catchers Brian McCann, Yasmani Grandal and Russell Martin signed for far less money, all of whom were superlative defenders with similar offense. Realmuto here is getting Joe Mauer and Buster Posey money, two guys with HOF level talent who signed much younger and were faces of the franchise.

What? We’ll have George Springer through his age 36 season.

Updated my post since I just added the contract years to their ages, which was a mistake.

For what it's worth, Grandal projects to be just as good as Realmuto - better hitter, better defender, worse baserunning - and he'll be making $18.25M per year in his ages 32-34 seasons while for Realmuto he'll be making $23.8M in his respective seasons. I don't think Realmuto is $5M+ more valuable per year than Grandal is.

I look at the comparison being more that Grandal is underpaid for what he provides vs Realmuto being overpaid.

I'm glad Realmuto got signed. I didn't think it was a high need for the Jays to go after him. I still got faith in Jansen/Faps McGuire/Kirk.

I'm looking at market value for comparable catchers in recent history and either every FA catcher has been underpaid or it's Realmuto that's getting a lot more than market value. Even the extension catchers got far less AAV.

Brian McCann - 30 years old, 5/85

Yasmani Grandal - 31 years old, 4/72

Russell Martin - 32 years old, 5/82

Buster Posey - 26 years old, 9/167

Joe Mauer - 28 years old, 8/184

Yadier Molina - 30 years old (July birthday), 5/75

Realmuto - 30 years old, 5/115.5

Something doesn't add up here.

You didn't factor in how stupid Dave Dombrowski is...

Covid didn't effect that deal! The phillies didn't win with Realmuto the last couple years. Now he's on the books for a higher salary. They are in the same division with the mets and the braves. How long before they trade Realmuto and eat salary to do so?

As far as I can tell Realmuto is only 29 years old at present. Of the guys that signed as free agents in your list he's the youngest of the bunch, and has only signed for 5 years. He's young enough to provide decent value for the Phillies. I really don't see why his AAV is such a big deal, it's a relatively short contract for an elite free agent who is less than 30 years old at signing. I do wonder who the Phillies were even bidding against and what kind of offers Realmuto was fielding before signing his deal. For all we know it could be a Chris Davis situation where the only real competition was with the team who he already played for.

Realmuto will be 30 on opening day. The age he is at the time he signs his contract is entirely irrelevant since he will be playing his first season of that contract as a 30 year old. Sure, he's good, but is he better than any of the guys that I listed above? Pretty much everyone who signed the contracts I listed were coming off better or comparable seasons prior to signing their respective contracts. I wouldn't consider a 5 year contract for a catcher to be a short term deal since most of them that reach FA sign for 4-5 years anyway and their aging curve is clearly not the same as other position players.

The Brewers are one of two mystery teams showing interest in Justin Turner. Dodgers, Jays and one more mystery contender are in the derby. Turner will only consider contenders but has a final 4. - Heyman
