Vladdy Guerrero has lost more than 30 pounds (12 pounds in the offseason so far)

It's not. Bryce Harper was correcting the guy who pronounced it like that.

Acuña, as close to phonetically possible in English, is pronounced "ah-coo-nyah". The ñ is "n-yah" more or less.

I know, I was just being silly. :) I just can't unhear that moron every time I seen Acuna's name typed out now.

MLB.com from 30 teams 30 stats that stand out:

BLUE JAYS: Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s 12 balls hit 110+ mph

Guerrero is already pulling away from the field, hitting 12 balls harder than 110 mph over his first 16 games. New York’s Giancarlo Stanton is next in line at seven, which shows just how impressive Guerrero’s April has been. We’re finally seeing the Vladimir Guerrero Jr. that dominated the Minor Leagues and arrived as baseball’s top prospect in 2019. These big numbers at the plate will get the attention, but Guerrero has been setting himself up for this power by doing the little things, like taking walks and working counts into his favor. His improved fitness brings optimism that he can sustain this swing late into the season, too, and with a .389 average and 1.174 OPS entering this week, the sky is the limit once again for the young star.

Re-visiting Jim’s question, would you be crazy to take Vlad 1st round in 12 team re-draft if it was today? The correct answer appears to be “no, not crazy”

I recently took him in the first round in an off-board 16 team roto league.

Just based on the eye test, Vlad looks pretty decent at 1B.

And UZR seems to grade him as positive at 1B as well. If he hits and plays an above average first base? We can look forward to seasons where he's at peak 6-8 WAR instead of 4-5.

If he’s anything close to 5 or 6 WAR per season we should be thrilled considering it’s all offense.

Vlad's BABIP is actually .364 with a AVG of .360 and hard hit metrics through the ceiling.

It's crazy to state, but his current performance looks sustainable which means a 8-12 WAR season may be coming.

It's been 60 years since a 1B put up a 10-WAR season. He'd basically have to hit like like peak Bonds all season.

It's crazy to type this but his defense at 1B has looked incredible this year.

Edit: Not looking to get all hyperbolic but he looks like a top 5 defensive 1B in baseball right now. Better range and arm than the typical 1B, good hands on picks, incredible athleticism and flexibility compared to most 1B. Fat Evan White.

If peak Albert Pujols, who was also an elite defender and an above average baserunner wasn't putting up 10 WAR seasons then it's pretty safe to say Vladdy isn't putting up a 12 WAR season lmao. Vladdy's performace isn't sustainable for the fact that he has a >200 wRC+, I'd consider that pretty unsustainable for anyone who isn't 2001-2004 Barry Bonds.

His D could swing it 2 WAR more.

The top 1st basemen peak seasons, since 1980 are mostly guys like Pujols, Olerud (two 8.1 seasons), who were awesome offensively and got close to neutral defensively.

Neutral defense, as compared to terrible (FG -20ish) defense will be the difference between a 6 WAR guy, and 8 WAR.

This is one of those little things that a good orgnaizations with a super-high-performance team should strive for... get the -20 defense guy to -5... get the .280 on base percentage guy to .300

There is a nice little advantage, in going from god awful terrible, to slightly below average in things.

He's also not grading out negatively on the basepaths this year, and has been solidly positive. Those improvements, becoming an average runner and a higher end defensive 1B, along with his hitting gives him a chance to be as valuable as Pujols (who was a good baserunner early in his career before they amputated his legs).

This doesn't disprove your general point, but both Olerud and Pujols were excellent defensively. A -5 def guy is an excellent defender relative to the rest of 1B, because it takes into account the harsh positional penalty since it's a much easier position to field. Pujols from 2006-2008 is basically as good as you'll ever see in terms of defensive value added at first base.

I kind of want to see how his new body would play at third base. Would probably be dumb to do that though now that he's found comfort in 1B and Groshans/Martin in the pipeline.

I really don't think they should move him. He's helping the team at 1B right now, and probably feels good about his defensive contributions for maybe the first time ever. Let him settle in as a 1st round masher.

And the team doesn't really have anyone else kicking down the door for PT at 1B. Moving him to get Rowdy Tellez onto the field at 1B just doesn't seem worthwhile.
