His bat and baserunning should improve a lot, which is mostly what we care about. Not holding my breath on the fielding but we can hope.

He's still in terrible shape.

If he has lost 30 pounds from his peak weight, he must have been disgusting.

Not only is he still pretty fat, he doesn't even look strong. He looks like a chubby college senior who hasn't worked out or played sports since high school.

Maybe the guy standing behind Vladdy can play. He seems more athletic.

Depends if he knows how to optimize his weight. There is a risk he could lose some power if he doesn't have the right balance.

I feel like this is an old wives tale. Whether they are serious about letting Vlad play third really effects the off season. If they were, Rowdy moves to first full time and he's a good defensive first baseman. Springer makes a lot more sense in centre or JBJ might even make sense and you could rotate the other 3 in the DH role.

Depends if your talking playing 3B or power ABs. There is obstacle course type muscle which makes you lithe and quick, which is great for 3B. Then there is gym muscle, where if done properly will give you more AB power..

Let's stop pretending that Vladdy playing 3rd base is an option.

"I learned after these months of the coronavirus that if you don't work hard, you can't be in the Major Leagues," he said. "Why do [Fernando] Tatis and [Juan] Soto put up good numbers? Because they work hard. I got the hits I got because of the ability that God gave me. But I knew it from the beginning. I know I did it wrong."

Guerrero said he is now eating differently, cutting out fatty foods and ingesting nothing but water after 7 p.m. He is also reportedly working out at the Blue Jays' Spring Training facility where he's hitting, taking ground balls and doing weight training.

...

I really like his quotes in the article. Obviously you have to back up the talk but he manned up and he has an eye on/is mindful of the guys that are performing better than him and why. All good signs from a 21yo kid. Most of you haters are just miserable Boxy’s

How is it an old wives tale? I’d bet money I can bench probably double what Altuve benches, so why can he hit a baseball so much farther than me. There’s a lot of complicated physics involved and so it’s silly to think losing weight just automatically makes you better at swinging the bat

Elite hand eye coordination and hitting mechanics? I don't think you're giving Altuve enough credit on the strength side of things, he needs to generate a lot of force with his frame to be able to send one 400+ feet.

Vlad can send a ball 400 feet fresh out of bed, while obviously he shouldn't just be losing a ton of weight without doing strength exercises so that he's not losing a lot of muscle, it's not like suddenly him being 50 pounds lighter will stop him from crushing the baseball - ideally not into the ground.

I’m just saying I don’t automatically assume mechanics of a swing will be better from a weight loss. Maybe he uses that extra girth for torque.

His batted ball profile would seem to indicate the added weight definitely hasn't helped, if not hindered his hitting mechanics (this is probably simplistic I won't disagree). Still though like I've said before I don't care that much that Vlad is getting into better shape so he can become a below average defender at third or first and a slightly better baserunner, but god damnit the man needs to fix his launch angle so that he can finally break out into the guy he was always supposed to be offensively. If losing the gut allows him to do that then go right ahead, I certainly won't get upset at an athlete for improving their physique.

When I think Vlad the guys that pop to mind are Ortiz, Fielder, Mo Vaughn etc. When they were healthy they were just fine.

As you mentioned, there’s a mechanical issue, maybe the weight loss helps and maybe it doesn’t.

No debating it helps with bsr and fielding though

Vladdy's only 21, and i'm sure he will struggle with weight issues his entire life. I just hope he can find a balance to stay healthy during a season and hit dingers.

Weight loss would 100% help anyone regardless. When you have natural ability, you can rely on that a bit more. Wouldn't you rather a fit Vladdy than the ladder?

All depends on what ladder you’re talking about:)

Jokes..

But seriously, I guess it helps when he’s not hitting as expected. If Ortiz or Fielder is coming off an MVP bat year I’m not wondering what will happen if they lost 75lbs.

Considering VG’s case, I’d say it prob makes sense to try things to get to next level

Ortiz did drop some weight late into his career and he continued to rake. Fielder's weight arguably contributed to a premature end to his career.

Atkins announced this after the PS, it' very real???

I think weight is definitely a contributing factor to his s***** D at 3rd, but I'm not quite sold on his baseball IQ defensively.

It's a carrot and stick thing to get him in shape.

"get in shape, fatty" is less motivating than "get in shape and we might let you play your preferred position again, fatty"

I just read the quotes (never heard that originally). He says he isn't closing the door on Vlad playing 3rd and threw out a token note that "he would have felt comfortable playing him at third base toward the end of the season". That sounds like media BS talk to me personally. How does he say he wants to improve the defense (which was 29th in runs saved last year) while also seriously considering Vlad at 3rd?

The facts are clear - our defense isn't very good and Vlad is awful at 3rd defensively. I'm going to stick with that and ignore the media talk.

I'm really happy he's losing weight though. I hope failure has changed his attitude and that the trust fund kid is finally dedicated to being a great baseball player - and putting the necessary work in to get there.

I'm not sure waiving a carrot in front of Vlad is going to motivate him...
