Kiermaier looks like a great target. Prospect cost should be minimal and that would be some elite run prevention up the middle. He’s got 3 years left on his contract at $11.5M next year but that’s like 25% of Tampa’s payroll now.

There’s a reason Padres chose to give up prospects on the trade market. All 3 of the top FA options give me some form of reservation on a long term deal but I guess that’s almost always the case in FA.

Yeah

You don't get 26-28 year old injury-free impact star players hitting free agency very often. Though there have been a couple recently. Amd they cost 1/3 of a billion dollars.

KK has negative value.

I think JBJ signs for less $$$

1.5 WAR player at best now and every year wRC+ mostly under 90

Its been 3 years since he's been really good

JBJ not much different really

But he just costs $$ and probably less than KK is making

He should def be plan B

Posted

Kiermaier has 2/26 left on his deal. JBJ should cost less than that and is a FA so won't have to trade anyone for him (although KK shouldn't cost much in a trade).

But man the CF market after Springer is very thin. Apparently the Jays are one of 4 teams looking at Haruki Nishikawa (posting period ends in a few days). He plays pro baseball and has a pulse, so of course the Jays are being linked to him, but I doubt they would view him as a legit CF option.

God I hope you guys don’t get your wish w/JBJ. Projected to hit .226 with an OPS barely north of .700 with just ok defense.

Which seems fair for a 30yo that was coming into his short contract year off 3 consecutive subpar offensive full seasons with defense trending downwards and he’s 30 playing CF

Gri projects better, just with better bat and lesser defense but better. Why then we would target a CF when there are many other pressing needs like IF, SP, RP..idk

Not sure I'd say JBJ has just "ok" defense. He is much better than anyone on our team defensively. However, I'm not the biggest JBJ fan offensively. Would only like him as a stop gap solution for 1 season if we don't get Springer.

Just quoting projections, which don’t seem out of place. No doubt he’d be better defensive than RG but RG’s bat will likely be better so it’s a wash. Meanwhile we have glaring holes in SP, IF, and RP- the last one more my opinion

Report: Tanaka to pitch in Japan if he doesn't re-sign with Yankees

https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/2081635

This would suck since that's one less option for us pitching wise.

Feels like an incomplete take though. He says Tanaka doesn’t want to pitch for a non-contending team, so that doesn’t mean Yankees or nothing. Then says he wants to end his career with Jap team. Which also doesn’t suggest Yankees or bust next year

Credit to you for reading past the headline title lol

There really isn't a perfect CF option if/when Springer signs with the Mets. JBJ is flawed, KK is flawed, and Grichuk is flawed. If Jonathan Davis could hit at all he'd be the best option, but I think best case for him is 4th OF who start against LHP. If there's a pre breakout Trent Grisham type of OF who another team doesn't appreciate, then now would be a good time to make that deal. Otherwise running Grichuk back for another year might be just as good as the alternatives. I’d be fine with JBJ though. Short term and can be platooned. Edited by glory

We need someone

There's not a single outfielder in our top 10 prospects and none of our present guys should really be playing center if possible

He's being projected at 1.8 WAR, and put up 1.3 in 1/3 of a season last year. He shouldn't be plan A, but it's not like he can't help us either.

In a video posted by the free agent pitcher on Thursday, Bauer says that he has a call scheduled with the Blue Jays. The vlog was was posted on Thursday but was filmed around Christmas when he was home with his family.

The reigning NL Cy Young winner said he would speak with Jays pitching coach Pete Walker as well as a member of the team’s high performance staff, likely to be Angus Mugford, listed as the team’s director of high performance.

“I’ve got a call with the Blue Jays at six. Gonna check in with them, talk to their pitching coach and their high performance coach and all them and see what they have to offer,” Bauer said. “So that’s moving forward.”

Hope Pete brushed up on his homework!

Depends on where you think Austin Martin ends up. Most think he's the CF of the future, with Groshans & Martinez battling it out for 3B. Also seen analysts tease that he could easily debut in the majors this year.

We are not getting Springer. 0% chance, IMO.

I am looking at the second tier FAs. If the Jays signed JBJ, Wong and Tanaka (very possible) and a few other minor FAs, etc., it would definitely be an incremental improvement over 2020. Not sexy, but it would be okay. In this scenario Biggio moves to 3B. Tellez and Vlad DH/1B. And goodbye Fisher. I am also very okay with not signing an OF and promoting Martin to the bigs after the super 2 cut off to play in the OF. But, signing JBJ on a 1 or 2-year deal would give us the luxury of keeping Martin down for a little bit longer.

But in my arcade game world, Manoah, Groshan and Martin are all up in 2021.

Have you been keeping up with Bauer at all? This really doesn't mean anything at all aside from stating the obvious in that we're interested in him. Bauer is pretty much playing out his FA process as a reality show in order to boost his social media following.

Bauer is a blatant FA whore lol.

Yeah Bauer doesn't hide the fact that what he's doing is entirely to build his "brand". I actually like that and hope more players do it because my god MLB off seasons are boring as s*** so players engaging with fans to get them excited during the winter is a good thing. But I wouldn't take anything Bauer says about specific teams seriously. He is trolling everyone to gain more followers and get more people talking about him.
