We lost Tony an over-aggressive slide breaking up a double play. Then Ernie went down. Living in the states, I'd get up early every morning to watch the news before school for the score. Every time I'd be in a pissed off mood getting on the bus. That last weekend, the games were on national TV both saturday and sunday (10/3 and 10/4), so I was able to be tortured live. Key pitched a gem that last game but old Kirk hit that homer late and we lost 1-0. Doyle Alexander (who we had traded to the Braves the year prior for Duane Ward) killed us. Went like 10-0 after the trade deadline.

The worst part of all of it was knowing we could have beaten the Twins. The Cards I wasn't as certain, but I remember watching the Twins win in five, ripped that should have been us.

McGriff/Fielder were the DH, Gruber/Rance at 3B, Lee/Liriano at 2B. Plenty of platoons back then. Can't remember who platooned with Whitt. It wasn't Buck, who I believe retired in '86. Don't think Borders came up until '89, but I'm getting old.

Charlie Moore, Borders came up in '88. That was a rough collapse, it all started with Bill Madlock taking out Tony as you mentioned, fugly.

Collapse continues no end in site. Every game feels impossible to win.

I gave up on this one early. Probably irrational but when they couldn't get any lead off walks in, and Bo hit into the 3rd inning double play it felt over

Looks like one of the teams will be within 3 after today.

After tomorrow there could be a team within 2 with 7 to go. At that point it actually becomes far less remarkable then the 87 collapse.

The '87 team was a great team that had bad luck and just got cold at the worst time. The 2020 team is a .500 at best, which is exactly where they are right now.

Yeah, not even close.

I think the Angels are the real threat. Trout, Rendon, Dylan Bundy, Ohtani. Ohtani hasn't hit but what if he does next week??

We play the Orioles in the final games. They just have to gain 1.5 for the final 3 to be relevant.

With 5 hungry (or not so hungry) teams chasing us there are many scenarios for disaster, unless we win 3 more games.

Can this team win 3 more games?

The Angels have a super easy schedule left. I could totally see them winning the next 7.

Nothing at all like 1987. The sad 8th seed in an expanded playoff format in a year the Jays were expected to be fringe contenders is not nearly a big of a prize as division title heading straight to the ALCS. Also there is a much more recent example of 2016.

Yes the current apparent hopelessness surrounding the Jays is very 2016 like. The difference being that was an 'old' veteran team which had been to the ALCS the previous year, while this is a very young team, particularly on the position player side.

There is no comparison to the 1987 team that won 96 games despite losing the last 7 in a row, . I think someone already mentioned in this thread, that is more like the epic 2011 Red Sox September meltdown (although that one went pretty much the entire month, not just the final week).

87 - 7 games left 3.5

2020 - 8 games left 3 game lead Seattle, 3.5, Los Angleles, 3.5 Baltimore

Baltimore gets to play head to head.

Anaheim has an easy schedule and talent

Seattle is looking to break 19 year playoff steak

again, while there are similarities numerically, the differences in the talent level of and expectations for the team are totally different. I think any reasonable, knowledgeable Jays fan would have been satisfied with a 80-82 season, and nowhere near 'post-season' play back in Feb. before all the ******** started. You could make a pretty good argument that 2020 has been a big monkey wrench in the Jays' long-term development efforts.

I didn't check and just trusted SaskJayFan.. either he was mistaken or just being sarcastic.

For immediate release from the desk of Commissioner Rob Manfred.

"The historic collapse of the Toronto Blue Jays combined with the expanded playoff format has given several long suffering teams a very good chance at making the playoffs. However this morning a false rumor was circulating that the Los Angeles Angels had for all intents and purposes clinched the last playoff spot, due to their easy remaining schedule. In the next 7 days the Angels will be facing the Padres and Dodgers, two very good teams.

However given that the Padres and Dodgers both will have clinched a playoff spot these teams may not be playing with passion and intensity these final days. Thus the Angels schedule should be considered of intermediate difficulty. Not easy, but perhaps not hard. In our view the Angels, along with Baltimore, and Seattle all have equal chance to take the playoff spot vacated by the Blue Jays collapse."
