Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Author Posted September 11, 2020 My god I am erect Put him in the lineup, Charles! You coward!!! Villar can take a seat
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 It's a good move. C has been a huge hole for us and Kirk looked really good in ST. Creates a 40-man roster crunch for us next year. We are going to have like 5 catchers or something so we will need to make some moves but that can be done.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 He's gonna out hit vladdy and jr will think the problem is that he needs more mass

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 I probably shouldn't have made this thread It deserves a thread. He is our last hope. Not sure the Blue Jays have ever had a player with as high a minor league on base percentage come up. His minor league on base percentage is higher than Vladdy's. And I don't know what he hit against other blue jays in interquad. Let's just pretend it was .350 .525 .800 He is the next Edgar Martinez. Not hyping just being realistic.

wilko Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Easy, DFA McGuire and Joseph Joseph was just DFA'd. The fapper is next!
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Yet another base clogger. Jays gonna be setting new double play records soon.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Easy, DFA McGuire and Joseph Joseph has already been DFA'd but that still leaves Jansen, Kirk (who didn't need to be added yet for Rule 5 purposes), McGuire and then Moreno and Riley Adams have to be added. I suppose we could dump McGuire but I'm not sure that I'd be ready to after 45 ABs this year. But anyway, it's a good problem to have.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Alejandro Kirk is one of four players in the Blue Jays farm system this past three years to be given a 70-grade hit tool (or 80) by Baseball America. BA also came out to say he just missed their pre-season top 100 rankings (a few staff voted for him). The other three: - Vlad Jr - Bo Bichette - Austin Martin His plate discipline is Biggio-esque with higher bat-to-ball ability. Surprising amount of pop in his bat, but more doubles than homers, more pull side and line-drive power. High on-base skills and zone recognition. Quick compact swing. He’s completely untested in double-A, so this is unprecedented for a catching prospect. Arm is also pretty decent, defense has made strides this past year.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Does this move start the clock on him as a Blue Jay? Any drawbacks from making this move?

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Author Posted September 11, 2020 Does this move start the clock on him as a Blue Jay? Any drawbacks from making this move? The drawbacks are that weird Caleb Joseph fanboys are upset. Yes this starts his clock.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Does this move start the clock on him as a Blue Jay? Any drawbacks from making this move? It starts the clock but there’s no way to gain a full season of service time. And if he gets sent down the clock will stop. It’s pretty much a non-issue. Could probably use another season in AA/AAA to work on fundamentals and defense. The bat should be ready to contribute though, even just in a smaller role.

The Blue Jays are near the MLB bottom in offense from their catching position. Jansen has been somewhat okay, but McGuire was as black as a black hole can get.

If they are bringing him up now, in the midst of a playoff race when they didn't really need to, I don't think he's going back down. My guess, it's a Jansen/Kirk tandem for now with Kirk eventually taking over the starting gig.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Seems like a really early call up, but I guess we’ll see. Would love to see him succeed.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Author Posted September 11, 2020 Another benefit to Kirk coming up: he can actually throw out runners.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 No doubt if he rakes right away it’ll be hard to send him down for service time reasons. It’s kinda dumb to service time manipulate a catcher, and I think the org realizes that which is why he got called. If the bat is ready, let him contribute. If he’s playing at an All Star level at age 28 (which implies he’s still healthy) just pay the man his money.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 My guess, it's a Jansen/Kirk tandem for now with Kirk eventually taking over the starting gig. Having an offensive catcher bench option to pinch hit for Jansen is also a good thing. They’ve already pinched hit for Jansen so many times this season, might as well be Kirk. If Kirk is legit this move makes a lot of sense.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 Does this move start the clock on him as a Blue Jay? Any drawbacks from making this move? His option clock starts earlier than it could have. That's the only "drawback", but honestly, I don't care. When a player is ready and/or an upgrade to your roster, call them up. Kirk is an upgrade. Period. If he needs to be sent down to begin 2021, that's fine. The only potential issue here is that it will take up a 40 man roster spot which could mean we lose someone in the off season. Moreno is rule 5 eligible, so that's a possible risk (though doubtful someone will take an A ball catcher).
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Posted September 11, 2020 I’m kinda shocked they promoted him but look forward to seeing him. I support the decision to not have him debut vs DeGrom. DeGrom is going to absolutely throat f*** this lineup and he doesn’t need to be subjected to that.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2020 Author Posted September 11, 2020 Can't be bothered to care about the service clock on a dude who is morbidly obese. Get the f*** out of this thread
