Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 The right guy made this thread
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Love Robbie Ray. He's got loads of potential if anyone can figure out his control issues. A lot like the Liriano acquisition actually.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 is Robbie Ray any good? Is this a rental or someone we think can be with the team for a while?

Thaddeus Malice Verified Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Have there been any reports about why he's been this bad this year? His numbers are pretty horrific. 31 walks in 31 innings doesn't seem like your usual control issues.
MunenoriKawasakiMVP Verified Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Use him in the pen probably. He has no control.
Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 He’s free agent at years end. Pretty crazy to get a rental who's been horrible in a shortened season no? Do we even have time to hope he turns things around here or am I missing something?

A lot like the Liriano acquisition actually. Came in here to post that it reminds me of the Liriano acquisition. I wonder what role they have in mind? He's an absolute dumpster fire right now, and there isn't much time to get him right.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 This is the type of high-variance, no-cost acquisition that makes sense to me.
GoJays1562 Verified Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 High strikeout rate but has command issues. Hopefully Pete walker can help him return to form.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 If nothing else Robbie Ray is a strikeout lefty out of the bullpen. For Bergen that’s low risk. Probably someone that organization identified as a player they want to bring in and fix. Acquire him early to get a jump on the free agent process.

Pete Walker has his work cut out for him.
Thaddeus Malice Verified Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Apparently he tried to change his mechanics Oof. I wonder if it's too late this season for him to adjust back. He still walked loads of people but was pretty good despite that. Wonder why he messed with them.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 I don't mind this deal at all. Ray got s*** loads of talent and is a K monster. He just needs to figure out his control issues.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 There isn't much time to help him figure it out, but for Bergen, why not?
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Ray making 9.4 million this year. It's nice to see the willingness to take on salary. That should help in our search for a bat.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Robbie Ray has electric stuff, strikeout machine. He just walks people for days. Saw a couple of his starts this year, he wasn’t that bad.
JuniorFelix54 Verified Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 This is the Blue Jays big tradeline splash? Possibly the worst SP in all of baseball? The GM gets paid millions of dollars for these moves my God.. I wouldn't take Robbie Ray if they offered to pay me just to take him off their hands. Incredible...
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 What else can you say? It's the perfect kind of acquisition the Jays can make at their position in the standings. If he drops his walk rate to around 4 though, Gawd damn.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Apparently he tried to change his mechanics he moved to a much shorter arm motion this year (ala Joe Kelly, Trevor Bauer).....obviously it isn't working. Anyone know if he's gone back to his previous motion?

They got him from the Diamondbacks, not the Orioles.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Ray making 9.4 million this year. It's nice to see the willingness to take on salary. That should help in our search for a bat. That is prorated down to like $3 Million so we're on the hook for $1.5MM. Really low risk move, I like it a lot.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Robbie Ray is Patrick Corbin if the latter had 30 control. We were already comfortable with losing Bergen last season and even after getting him back from the Giants we used him for 1 inning. This is a great acquisition, costs us nothing and gives us a guy with good upside who can slot into the bullpen as a lights out lefty if he still has trouble during his starts.

Looks like the Dbacks are sending us 300k as part of the deal. Pretty minimal cost to take a chance on high reward acquisition
