King Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 https://www.thescore.com/mlb/news/2008339/5-mlb-trades-that-could-happen-ahead-of-next-weeks-deadline "Blue Jays acquire La Stella, Simmons from Angels BLUE JAYS GET ANGELS GET IF Tommy La Stella 1B Rowdy Tellez SS Andrelton Simmons SP T.J. Zeuch After hitting the nadir of their rebuild a year ago, the ascendant Blue Jays are flirting with respectability again, playing above .500 through the first month of 2020 despite losing star shortstop Bo Bichette to a knee injury that could sideline him for the majority of the season. Meanwhile, for the umpteenth year in a row, the Angels are a massive disappointment and will almost certainly try to offload as many of their soon-to-be free agents as possible. If the Blue Jays hope to amount to more than an also-ran in 2020, they would do well to inquire. Simmons, his shortcomings with the bat notwithstanding, is a massive defensive upgrade over Toronto's incumbent shortstops, such as they are. Additionally, his relatively hefty salary could enable the Blue Jays to get La Stella - a versatile infielder quietly worth 2.3 WAR over his last 106 games - included in the deal. La Stella, who owns a .828 OPS since 2019, could split his time between second and first base with the Blue Jays, with Cavan Biggio moving to the outfield to accommodate him. The deal would ultimately bolster a lineup lacking in depth in the wake of Bichette's injury. Though fringe contenders are typically reluctant to part ways with long-term pieces for rentals, the Blue Jays essentially have another Tellez at the ready after acquiring Dan Vogelbach from the Seattle Mariners on Sunday. Zeuch - a ground ball-inducing 25-year-old right-hander with some big-league experience - has fallen down the organizational depth chart of late. Neither loss would meaningfully affect the club's short- or long-term future. For the Angels, given their continuing inability to develop pitching and construct a competent major-league staff, Zeuch - under control through 2025 - represents a potential upgrade over some of their current big-league starters. Unlike many of the pitchers in the upper levels of their organization, Zeuch has a modicum of upside. Tellez, meanwhile, remains under control through 2024 and could be Albert Pujols' long-term replacement at first base if he can refine his approach a bit: Tellez has 29 home runs and 31 doubles through his first 154 big-league games, albeit with a .297 on-base percentage and a sky-high chase rate." Yes please! If we are able to upgrade the ML roster with spare pieces like Tellez and Zeuch I would be super impressed. Lol why the f*** would the Angels do that. Never heard of this Jonah Birenbaum guy but I hope he doesn't get paid to publish this trash
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 I thought this trade actually went through but it's just an idea a writer had lol.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 The theory crafting on a move that brings in a MIF and bumps Biggio to RF and then makes one of Gurriel or Hernandez expendable for pitching is actually rather interesting.

That still leaves the team with only 3 outfielders available though, unless you think McKinney is a suitable backup.

Sorrow Verified Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 I think Fisher will be back and I'm honestly fine with him as a 4th OF for the season. If you become concerned about D you run Davis.

Never heard of this Jonah Birenbaum guy but I hope he doesn't get paid to publish this trash Both are free agents at the end of the year. The angels aren't making the post season. They may want a bit more or different pieces, but they aren't going to get a whole lot for this pair. I'd rather target Boegarts and give up more to get a greater impact.

If you become concerned about D you run Davis. Removing Teoscar will be downgrading the squad quite significantly though, it's not like the teams minor league system is filled with great outfield prospects to insert in his place. On an offensively challenged team like the Jays removing their second best bat up to this point would be a huge loss. If you think people complain about Teoscar's misadventures wait until Fisher gets some actual playing time in the outfield.

I'd love to see your Bogaerts trade proposal. Does it also include Rowdy Tellez and TJ Zoinks?

Hernandez has a 1.1 WAR, an average exit velo of near 95 mph, and his statcast numbers are practically all in the 90-99 percentile except for whiffs/K's. Not sure I'd move him or Gurriel with OF being an organizational weakness from top to bottom. Of course if the return is right, then you make a move, but I find it hard to believe that type of move is out there right now.

Nevermind, I just checked he's a free agent, we could get him for nothing (that's kinda surprising to me, a cursory glance at his numbers from last year doesn't look bad... injured?)
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Yay or Nay? Damn that's tough, I guess it boils down to how badly you want to compete this season. Clevinger's ugly early numbers would cause me some concern as to what version of him you are going to be obtaining.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Damn that's tough, I guess it boils down to how badly you want to compete this season. Clevinger's ugly early numbers would cause me some concern as to what version of him you are going to be obtaining. My first reaction was 'yay' for value but 'nay' based on the Jays situation. However after thinking about it he's under control for 2 more years so there's a lot of value in that. I think it makes sense for the Jays.
Ray Verified Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Clevinger kind of goes opposite to the makeup aspect in player evaluation that this front office seems to stress so much. Not that I wouldn't love to have him, but it doesn't seem like the type of player they've gone for in the past. Clevinger to ATL would be interesting. Clevinger for Pache or Ian Anderson?
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 I would go for Plesac. I think you could get him for cheaper, he is younger and under control and I don't think huge difference.. Giving up SWR would be tough...IMO
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Clevinger makes me nervous. To whatever extent he was getting by earlier this season, he was relying extensively on his off-speed stuff. His fastball was not effective, at all. It was a stark contrast to last season when his fastball was Hader-like, in that he used it a ton and generated tons of swinging strikes. He didn't look right at all in the starts he made this season. I'd be afraid of paying an ace price for a guy who isn't going to to come in and provide ace production this year. I also have no idea what I'm talking about, so there's that.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 This years team just isn't that good although I'm enjoying watching them a lot more lately. Based on that and Clevinger's start, no way Id part with SWR and Manoah. Does Clevinger add 2 more wins? We could get rid of Buntoyo and accomplish about the same a lot cheaper. But i know a lot less about what im talking about than BTS, so theres that.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Cleveland has reversed course and will recall Clevinger to start tomorrow's game. Possible trade showcase? Let the speculation begin.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 I'd say no to that deal. Clevinger has too many red flags. So does everyone prospect of course, but the 6 years of control....

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 That is some BS.. Plesac was one of the best SP during his starts. Trade him to us, I would take him in a heartbeat and would prefer him over Clevinger anyway.. Full disclosure I also have him on 2 or 3 of my Fantasy teams and Antonetti is f***ing me over!! LOL
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Shatkins needs to get on this pronto.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 okay so... Simeon Woods-Richardson for Zach Plesac?
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 okay so... Simeon Woods-Richardson for Zach Plesac? No, the Indians want an OF and a catcher... We have catchers and I am sure we can come up with an OF. Why involve SWR. https://factoryofsadness.co/2020/08/22/cleveland-indians-3-moves-indians-need-make-deadline/
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 So you're saying they're asking for Teoscar and McGuire for Plesac. Where do I sign?
