Is it time to perhaps rekindle BJMB’s love affair with Jon Gray? What would it cost to acquire him?

Strikeouts are down. The love affair is gone.

His velocity is down a lot. 96 to 93.7 mph vs 2019. Not sure I would be interested after seeing that. Whiffs are way down too.

La Stella would be a great pickup, and shouldn't be expensive to acquire since he's a FA in a month.

Billy McKinney would look good in an Angels uniform. Put a package together so they send over Bundy as well.

I like Kevin pillar as a 4th outfielder acquisition. He seems to have made a massive improvement to his plate discipline up to this point in the season. Even if he reverts to his old hacking ways he would still be a great addition to a squad that lacks a proper defensive replacement in the outfield. Added bonus is not having to shift Biggio to the outfield as a defensive replacement and having Panik get more playing time as a result.

Possible trade partners: Pirates, Angels, Mariners, Red Sox, Tigers, Royals.

Maybe: Dbacks, Phillies

Rangers and Giants as well, they have some some pitching we can use.

More than who we could trade with, who would you feel comfortable giving up?

I'd be fine with any of the "roster" players we have:

- Panik

- Drury

- Tellez

- McKinney

- Fisher

- Shaw

- Gaviglio

- McGuire

I would also be okay with dangling,

- Borucki

- Thornton (can't remember if he can be traded or not as he's on the IL)

- Gurriel Jr.

Just to see what can be out there.

On the prospect side of things,

- Moreno

- Hiraldo

Really not much lol. I am big on holding onto all of Pearson, Martin, Groshans, SWR, Monah, Kirk and Martinez.

Go back to your buddies in Cleveland and acquire Plesac while he is in the doghouse. The Indians need a catcher and and outfielder, we can do that!! Get one of their pen guys like Williams while we are at it!! Do it, do it now!! :)

Without a minor league season, my guess is all the trades that happen (that aren't salary dumps or for PTBNL/cash) will involve 40 man roster players from both sides. So, McKinney is probably a realistic trade candidate. We are dealing with players with like 30 games of control left. The Jays should be able to upgrade the roster without losing much.

Get Kyle Seager to bridge the gap to Groshans/Martin?

He's probably not worth THAT much above the value of his contract. His 2022 option becomes a $15M player option if he's traded. With some PA bonuses apparently? Cot's isn't too clear on that final year.

Edit - oh I now see Hurl made this suggestion already

Shaw isn't going anywhere. McGuire and Fisher has fringe value and won't move the needle in trade discussions.

I would not trade Gurriel jr, that's a huge mistake. Taking a main piece of our own team to upgrade another part of the team also doesn't makes sense during a playoff run.

Gabriel Moreno has more value to us than as trade bait.

Other teams would be asking for Groshans, Manoah, SWR, Martinez, and Hiraldo.

None of them should be even considered unless we're getting an Ace back, like the Chris Sale / Verlander trade.

That caliber of target isn't available, unless you count Mike Clevinger.

I have no idea what this is supposed to mean.

There are teams that don't even have a catcher on their top ~30 prospects list while Toronto has a handful. Moreno's best use to Toronto might very well be as trade bait.

Fangraphs lists:

LAA - zero C

PIT - zero C

SEA - two C

SFG - two C including Bart

CIN - two C including Stephenson

TOR - five C (Kirk, Moreno, Adams, D'Orazio, and McGuire) plus a decent young MLB catcher in Jansen.

Plus if he ends up struggling to adjust when he meets upper level pitching, his value may never end up higher than it is now. I think he makes a lot of sense as a potential trade piece.

Moreno could very well end up being the best of the crop of catching prospects in the Jays system, to move him I would hope it's for a high end player in return.

Moreno was added to the 60-man player pool ten days ago. Only players from the 60-man pool can be traded this year.

Cleveland has also stated they are actively looking for catching help also

I wasn't aware of that rule. That's a weird rule, what's the reasoning behind it?

I don't really get it because teams can just add any player to the pool they want at any time. Assuming they arent full. Teams have been adding prospects like crazy the last 10 days.

So if a team wanted Orelvis Martinez... or a rando, like Will Robertson. The Jays could just add him to the pool today and trade him tomorrow. Am I wrong?

I'm pretty sure anyone can be traded, they just have to be listed as PTBNL if they are off the 60.

The point of the rule is really just about naming the player. Players not on the 60 should not expect to be shuttled around if they are traded, so they will be PTBNLs. No big deal.

Yes, a team could add a player to their 60 and include them by name in a trade but they'd only do that if the receiving team really wanted to add them to their 60 too for some reason. Can't see that really happening.

We should see a lot of PTBNLs.

I'd do this in a heartbeat if actually offered. If we are able to upgrade the ML roster with spare pieces like Tellez and Zeuch I would be super impressed.

"Blue Jays acquire La Stella, Simmons from Angels

BLUE JAYS GET

IF Tommy La Stella

SS Andrelton Simmons

ANGELS GET

1B Rowdy Tellez

SP T.J. Zeuch

After hitting the nadir of their rebuild a year ago, the ascendant Blue Jays are flirting with respectability again, playing above .500 through the first month of 2020 despite losing star shortstop Bo Bichette to a knee injury that could sideline him for the majority of the season. Meanwhile, for the umpteenth year in a row, the Angels are a massive disappointment and will almost certainly try to offload as many of their soon-to-be free agents as possible. If the Blue Jays hope to amount to more than an also-ran in 2020, they would do well to inquire.

Simmons, his shortcomings with the bat notwithstanding, is a massive defensive upgrade over Toronto's incumbent shortstops, such as they are. Additionally, his relatively hefty salary could enable the Blue Jays to get La Stella - a versatile infielder quietly worth 2.3 WAR over his last 106 games - included in the deal. La Stella, who owns a .828 OPS since 2019, could split his time between second and first base with the Blue Jays, with Cavan Biggio moving to the outfield to accommodate him. The deal would ultimately bolster a lineup lacking in depth in the wake of Bichette's injury.

Though fringe contenders are typically reluctant to part ways with long-term pieces for rentals, the Blue Jays essentially have another Tellez at the ready after acquiring Dan Vogelbach from the Seattle Mariners on Sunday. Zeuch - a ground ball-inducing 25-year-old right-hander with some big-league experience - has fallen down the organizational depth chart of late. Neither loss would meaningfully affect the club's short- or long-term future.

For the Angels, given their continuing inability to develop pitching and construct a competent major-league staff, Zeuch - under control through 2025 - represents a potential upgrade over some of their current big-league starters. Unlike many of the pitchers in the upper levels of their organization, Zeuch has a modicum of upside.

Tellez, meanwhile, remains under control through 2024 and could be Albert Pujols' long-term replacement at first base if he can refine his approach a bit: Tellez has 29 home runs and 31 doubles through his first 154 big-league games, albeit with a .297 on-base percentage and a sky-high chase rate."
