EastCoaster Verified Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 Look like the corona virus is starting to spread among teams in the MLB. Today 2 St-Louis Cardinals test positive game cancelled. The Phillies staffers tested positive series with the Jays cancelled The Florida Marlins now has 20 members who has tested positive for the virus. Already look like this shorten season could very well be in jeopardy.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 I didn't realize anyone had the virus until I saw this informative post.
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 I'm legit concerned about Vlad if he gets it.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 What is this COVID you speak of?
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 It's started to spread in the NBA too. Rudy Gobert got it so the NBA took a pause and just came back. Hopefully they don't have more problems. They say this virus started in late 2019 in Wuhan, China, that's why they call it COVID-19. Some think it's the 19th Coronavirus scientists have discovered, that is not true, it's simply named after the year it started.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 (edited) Well now that they are flat out canceling games for 1 or 2 people testing positive it’s looking kinda bleak. MLB went from being fine with the Braves losing both their catchers to shutting down stadiums for staff getting it barely a week later. Makes it even more annoying that the Blue Jays and Nationals are just chilling this weekend instead of playing. Does anyone really care if we play the Nationals 7 times in a row in this cluster f*** of a season? The schedule is already dumb anyway Edited July 31, 2020 by Jonn

The schedule is already dumb anyway Yeah, if the league policy was that the season would only proceed if NO ONE contracted the virus, then this whole exercise was extremely stupid, a waste of our time and a huge cocktease. Jesus Christ. Again, doesn't really seem like the virus is being transmitted on the field. Isolate the positives and f***ing play, or just shelf this garbage and I'll go back to pornhub
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 Yeah if one or two players testing positive is enough to cancel games, then torpedo the whole season and just come back in 2021. They'll lose fans in the process, but being a running joke in North American sports for royally messing this up isn't going to do much for their brand either. Either use the taxi squad for what it was meant for (ex. players who tested positive are quarantined and replaced by taxi squad members) or stop wasting our time.

I can understand the whole 40 man roster situation but I think it's something that will need to be given up if there is any real chance for a season to be completed. Perhaps the active roster (30 players) and the "taxi squad" (30-40 players) but not all have to be on the 40 man. They get service time if called up to the team, but you can't have a situation where you're DFA guys so you can sign Pat Venditte just so you have enough pitchers.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 As much as it sucked. I think most of us were prepared for a 2020 season not taking place. Especially when doing Bubbles in Florida and Arizona got ruled out. The fact that they came back and failed miserably will be an even tougher pill for Baseball to swallow. Especially if the NBA and NHL go on without issues. I want them to be able to figure this out and get things back on track. But I also have almost zero confidence in MLB’s front office making sound and competent decisions. They really can’t delay the season for a couple weeks without removing games from the schedule. They won’t play playoff games into November. Unless they decided to bubble the MLB Playoffs in a warm location. That might be able to buy them a couple weeks to have the regular season go into October and doing the playoffs in November.

Traditionally, baseball was over in Oct due to weather factors in the North. With no fans, do like the Superbowl or NCAA football for playoffs, pick one or two southern or locations with roofs and have the payoffs in November if need be. There is no reason why not. Of course you are competing with football, but you do that anyway in October.. Just don't schedule playoff games for when there are big NFL games.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 So Manfred threatening to shut down the season if the MLBPA doesn't get their s*** together and start getting the Covid rules to be followed. High fiving. Not wearing masks in the dugout. Poor decision making by the players.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2020 Posted July 31, 2020 I bet Rogers won't be very pleased at spending a bunch to get Buffalo ready just in time for a cancellation.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 My guess is the players dig their heels in, puff out their chests, fire back at Manfred, but take no responsibility for their role in this.

Beans Verified Member Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 I know it's supposed to be the players who are not following protocols, but I can't help but think this is all Rob Manfred's fault... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 I know it's supposed to be the players who are not following protocols, but I can't help but think this is all Rob Manfred's fault... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Paul Beeston knew what he was doing when he was one of the only team presidents to vote against Manfred. I believe the vote was 28-2 or something.

But when the players flat out rejected the idea of a bubble it really tied everyone’s hands. I honestly feel they could have tried a modified version of the Bubble that included family in these locations that would have substantially safer than the current setup. Texas literally has 2 Baseball stadiums side by side. You could have realistically had 10 teams play a season in though 2 venues. And than split the remaining teams between Arizona and Florida realigning the divisions by geography. Before ultimately hosting the playoffs exclusively at Marlins Park or something like that. Obviously Florida is s*** show but I just find it hard to believe they couldn’t manage those spring location if everyone was actually willing to buy in. I feel it was possible and nobody presented a plan with idea A, B, C. We basically got hey this is out only option and lets roll the dice and see what happens. They spent all that time arguing about money instead of actually coming up with a concept and locations to play the season safety. Its just a f***ing mess. I just feel way more could have been done.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 Manfred has alerted the TV networks. I think this weekend might be the last we see of baseball until 2021. If Manfred and Clark lose their jobs over this, that’s the only way any good comes out of this.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 4 more St.Louis players have tested positive, todays game PPD. Whoops... sorry 1 player and 3 staff members.
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 Do the players not care, like I dont understand
BTS Community Moderator Posted August 1, 2020 Posted August 1, 2020 Manfred has alerted the TV networks. I think this weekend might be the last we see of baseball until 2021. If Manfred and Clark lose their jobs over this, that’s the only way any good comes out of this. There hasn't even been more cases than anyone paying attention would have reasonably expected. If the season is shut down over what is actually a very small and very predictable number of cases, neither Manfred nor Clark should have jobs next week.
