Sure can. Just because it kills old people more easily does not mean those are the only people at risk.

It's like anything really, it can kill/severely affect anyone if you're unlucky. Just like if you cut your hand while gardening you can end up dying of sepsis.

The bigger direct issue with the virus (for the young and healthy) is it's so easy to get and at the moment social distancing is the only thing you can really do to minimise the risk. So while I don't think one positive = the whole team shut down, it'd be reckless to just send that one person home and continue as if nothing had happened. Maybe a shorter season means not playing every day, so if a positive test occurs then the team & staff all self isolate for a couple of days before playing again?

People die in car crashes every day. You better not ever get behind a wheel again in your life.

What a f***ing stupid statement... We're not in the middle of a global pandemic of drunk-drag racing where people have invisible cars so you can't even tell that they're driving...

If these guys are being tested daily every time they enter the park there should be zero cause for concern.

Why are we reopening the world if the risk to Major League Baseball players is so severe? Why aren’t there massive spikes of cases amongst protestors?

If being outdoors mitigates the virus a bit, and baseball players are practically distancing all game aside from being in the dugout, then I don't think it will be too difficult. There will be positive cases, but test everyday and quarantine anyone who tests positive, plus have players ready (taxi squad) when that happens, and I think they can pull it off.

If one or two players testing positive is enough to stop the whole league, then close up shop for 2020.

I don't really understand why games have to be played with no fans. Just sell every other seat to distance people and let them decide if they want to take the risk.

I mean, the balls get tossed around and pitchers lick their fingers constantly... If it gets into a game, it's going to spread around.

Well isn’t that the entire point of testing?

You don't think pitchers will be told not to lick their fingers if they are saying no spitting? I'm sure they will tell players not to pick their nose during the game. Wash your hands first before picking.

You should contact the league and the players association and tell them to quit fighting, because the risks are too dire to proceed with the season anyways. It would save a lot of fighting.

Remember when players were told they were no longer allowed to step outta the batters box between pitches? This is s*** these players have turned into a routine over their entire careers, it's going to happen even if they're told not to.

I mean, you can pretend that telling them no will stop them, but...

Just curious. How do you get food delivered to the bunker you're living in, or did you have a year supply of food in place to prepare a covid like world. Don't you miss the sun?

Instead of taking a humanitarian stance on this I will try and take a PR/need to get re-elected stance. 10 million Americans under the age of 65 (not doing math anymore but going to guess 3%) have a compromised immune system. Cases spike again but we all know that the government's want the economy to return. Lawyers representing those 3% (now swelled to 4% as doctors are as shady as cops and will sign anything) head to the gov't and say our clients are at risk still, you need to extend benefits. Elected officials say well we can't send them to work and die as that will be a re-election nightmare. So anyone with a compromised immune system now gets some form of compensation for 1 more year. No one in Alberta has a compromised immune system (because they are too tough to see a doctor) so they form a campaign against the gov't. You have 40% of the voters upset that you reopened the economy and 40% pissed that you are giving those weak ass immune systems welfare. Then the senior vote which you used to rock...well they are dead.

But we should put allow CD who is as strong as an ox and eats viruses for breakfast to make his own decisions on whether he gets to see a baseball game. Also Super Usher Tercet now has to clean up Spanky's drunken vomit which while alcohol has killed every virus in his body, its still gross.

This is a 100% satirical and unrealistic viewpoint to outline that decisions to reopen things are not so easy. Putting fans in seats for sports is something I have a lot of passion for,but it just isn't worth it right now...even if it turns out that it has zero effect on end outcome of the virus and economic recovery.

Now I shall ban myself for doing this here.

Reliable?

Heyman is reliable, but so far he’s the only one saying a deal is close.

Looks like the fans got bamboozled by Heyman. Sources say they’re not close yet as MLB just submitted their new proposal.

Welp, it’s a concession by owners but a relatively small one. Instead of @30-33% pro-rated based on full season, it’s around 37%.

That’s a small price to pay for owners to get grievance waived AND expanded playoffs.

If there’s no agreement, it will just go back to 48 games pro-rated.

The expanded playoffs is actually a huge deal. Even though it’s only for 2 seasons, once they’ve tried it and see the bank rolling in, I can’t imagine this won’t remain the focal point of the next CBA. Owners will want this permanent and have more teams become relevant in October.

So the MLB proposal is now 60 games. Where do they reach a deal? 65 games? 70?

Edit: I see now Rosenthal's speculation on this.

I feel like you guys need to realize the majority of these reporters are being fed info directly either from the MLB/owners or the MLBPA. Heyman in particular has always reported from the owners' POV, others from the other camp. When X says there is "optimism" or belief that the newest proposal is "fair" that's coming right from the horse's mouth and should really not mean anything until the agreement is confirmed.

Owners badly want the expanded playoffs as they can make a lot of their money back with that, and it gives them leverage for TV networks like ESPN to reup their next deal at a better rate (more playoff content = more value/money). If both sides are serious about getting a deal done, then I think Rosenthal's suggestion of 40% is probably reasonable considering the amount days they have to play the season. They do not want to extend the regular season into Oct, and want to finish before November.

IMO expanded playoffs makes a lot of sense for a shortened season, but it sucks that it's likely to carry over into the next CBA. Can we keep it from half the teams making the playoffs please?

It will be like NBA, where a team under .500 in the eastern conference can squeak into the playoffs just to get destroyed by the first seed. Granted, anything can happen in baseball so an upset is more probable. It would draw more interest to fans than fighting for a wildcard spot.

Playoffs are too big of a money maker and I have given up on thinking leagues will keep them smaller. Sadly it also probably grows the sport.

To be honest, I would like that. That said, I don't want 1 game eliminations or anything like that anymore. Should just be best of 5 in round 1 then best of 7 for every series after that.

Yeah, the way I see it is baseball has to adapt and the purists have to get over it. I say that as someone who has been watching for a long time and likes the game the way it is. Baseball has to evolve and at least try to cater to a younger generation of fans. More playoff rounds means more money for the sport, more money for the players, more meaningful games for a larger percentage of fanbases, and maybe some renewed interest from casuals who are getting more playoff/do or die content on national TV. Will it suck to see a .500 or sub .500 team make the playoffs? Of course. But we'll hate every rule change at first before either growing to like it or simply accepting it. People hated the Wild Card, and it worked. They hated the 2nd Wild Card, and it worked. When expanded playoffs happen and the top seeded teams get to choose their opponents, we'll all hate that too, until it becomes the norm and we either realize it's a fun idea or just accept it for what it is.

I think expanding playoffs would likely be good for the overall health of baseball as it would provide incentive for more teams to actually attempt to compete instead of tanking.
