I hope this is true, and I'd expect unless something drastically wrong happens in the next 30 days that some variation of this is likely going to happen (even if it's in hub spots rather than all the stadiums), but Trevor Plouffe is not the source I'd use to get excited about this. Once Passan, Rosey, etc, start talking about, then it might mean something.

I will say though that if MLB is the first US sport to return and it happens to fall on July 4th weekend, then that's a huge opportunity to build some new fans.

I find it exceptionally unlikely they'll be playing in front of fans in many of the parks. I'll be more than happy to watch actual sports on TV. League of Legends just isn't the same.

We won't see fans in attendance in any sport for the rest of the year, most likely. There will have to be a vaccine before they can pack 20k+ anywhere.

Baseball from July-Nov with no fans in attendance either in regular stadiums or in 3-5 random places in the US works for me. Baseball is baseball.

I trusted King so much I took this at face value without even looking at the source. Never again, King.

Yeah, Passan is hyping up the Korean league on ESPN. No mention at all about this.

Troll thread.

Shapiro met with Tory and Ford about this exact same subject and timeline. The story is 100% true that this is what MLB is shooting for. With Toronto (and the 14 day quarantine) and NYC teams being the ones that need provisional plans. Plouffe jumped the gun before all the approvals that is all. I think the July 1 start happens. I will unlock the thread for you to pre-apologize to King

So, Ontario has about 14.5 Million people. Florida has over 21 million people. A very large % of that is over 65/elderly/most susceptible. Many more vulnerable the Ontario.

Why could they play baseball in Florida, but Toronto couldn't make an exception for having games at Rogers Center without fans etc..? The Teams use charter flights and you can get permission to cross border etc.

I don't see why Toronto would shoot itself in the foot? Or why the hurdles could not be overcome.

I also see it as mental health for the citizens in lockdown in Canada. It is great benefit with just a few exceptions..

On another note.. I think MLB should use CGI fans on the broadcasts and pipe fan noise and cheers through the PAs during games.. Seriously..

I don’t think I’ve ever hated an idea more than I hate this idea.

Jeff Passan is reporting that MLB is going to offer a return-to-play proposal to the players' union within a week, and teams are encouraging players to prepare for a "spring" training that could begin in mid-June and a season that could start in early July, ESPN link here.

Yea, because the Dome with 15,000 fans is a tomb.. Empty and if closed....Morbid.. In this day and age you would not even know the difference on TV and you have a guy like the old organ player who ques fan noise at the appropriate time.. I think the players would like the fan noise also, according to interviews I have seen...

Everything about this situation is weird and different and I want the full experience. Empty stadiums/arenas that are so quiet you can hear a pin drop. That's what I want for when all sports are back.

If fans are not allowed, then I honestly don't think the Jays should have any home games in Toronto even if every other team is in their regular stadium. What is the point of going through customs and traveling to a different country multiple times just to play a game that could easily be duplicated in the Jays ST facility in Florida? In that 10 team division idea, the Jays are in the same division as the Rays and Marlins, so home games in Dunedin shouldn't impact that alignment.

I suppose if the Jays roster agrees with it I see no issue. The entire point of not having all 30 teams isolate in their spring facilities is that players hate it and they want to go home to their families. But Toronto may be different if not a lot of players have set their roots here.

I guess it depends on how many players live in Toronto/Canada. I can't imagine that list is long but who knows. Ideally all the home teams play in their regular parks, but with Canada being a different country and the issues with border, customs, different quarantine mandates, etc, it just seems like a pointless hassle. If no fans are in attendance, then the Jays home field can literally be anywhere and it wouldn't matter.

With that said, one of the reasons why I like the 3-5 hubs idea is because of what I said above. If there are no fans, then the venue really isn't all that important. Even if they decide that Arizona/Florida/Texas/Vegas/whatever is the best plan, then that works too.

I'm pretty sure Florida is opening before they even meet the minimums outlined by Trump, let alone what most other world leaders are setting bars for. Aside from that, if no fans are going to be at the games, there's really no reason to play the games in Toronto right now. Make use of our upgraded spring training facility or the Rays/Marlins parks. Cut down on the travel for the players, which should hopefully also reduce the risk to them. The ONLY real benefit to holding the games at RC right now is the roof, which doesn't matter too much outside of the spring/fall. If things go well this summer, the Jays could always switch to RC in the fall. As far as mental health goes for people in Canada, it makes no difference where they're held since they won't be physically attending the games anyway.

Definite NO to the CGI fans and crap. Roboumps, yes. Robofans, no.

Does a short season help or hinder the Jays compete this year?

A shorter season means less time for teams to regress to their true talent level. That can only help the Jays. If they start the season hot, and there's only 80-100 games, then the "coming back down to earth" phase is greatly reduced. I think a shorter season can only hurt the good teams and help the average ones, but ultimately it probably won't make too much of a difference. Maybe one team that otherwise would have been average overachieves for 80+ games and goes into whatever type of playoff format the league has in mind.

Another interesting question is whether the World Series champion in 2020 (assuming there is a season) will even be looked at fondly by the fanbase whose team wins. Like, if the Jays overachieve in a 100 game season, make the playoffs where Manfred plays around with the format, and somehow we end up winning a title with no fans in attendance and possibly no games even played in Toronto, how would the fanbase react to it? I mean a win is a win but it would have to be diminished to some degree.

Shorter season means more variance in the standings. For a team which isn't elite, and not even necessarily competitive, that can only help us. Some early injuries for the Yankees, Red Sox, Rays combined with a hot start from some of our players can cause all kinds of chaos in the projected standings and it would be extremely beneficial since the regression from those injuries and unsustainable hot starts usually occurs throughout the long 162 game season.
