Espinal with a homer and a terrific play at short. He and Panik are both making excellent cases for backup MIF...

Would much rather take them north and stash Drury in AAA. Drury has done nothing this spring to show he's made changes and belongs.

I wonder if Espinal has the raw tools to play an adequate CF. Could profile better there offensively if he can stick. His bat-to-ball is very intriguing, and he seems to have a good approach at the plate. Hopefully he can run into a few more homers with the juiced ball.

Espinal suxxx. Could be better than Drury but that's not saying much.

He projects better than Anthony Alford at least! (shots fired)

Ill never understand carrying around useless weight like joe panik. When it comes to the trade deadline you get nothing in return. Why forego development in Espinal. Dude had a 76 wrc last year. Dont know why this forum has such a hard on for AAAA players

Damn it, Barker, when you get it right, you really get it right!

Hopefully Panik being on the roster means either Drury gets sent to AAA or outright waivers.

Anthony Alford is going to hit 300 Canadian Tire Credit Card sign-ups this year. Watch.

*in the Mexican League

I believe in him!

I think it's more that Espinal's has like 100 at bats in AAA and we have very little depth at MI within the upper minors. Having Espinal sit on the big league bench isn't going to help his development.

There's probably a very slim chance we get 2017 Joe Panik again, but if we do - like we did with Sogard last year, we can get a couple of lottery tickets for him. There's also a pretty good chance that Espinal would post a 76 wRC+ in the bigs...

I was checking out Panik's numbers from last year and it appears at first glance that his numbers improved when he was traded to the Mets. When looking deeper those improvements don't look to be sustainable for him though, as most of his value was generated in September/October when he managed to run into a couple of home runs. His HR/FB for the month was 22.2%, for a guy that has a 5.2% HR/FB for his career it seems unlikely he can pull that off again. Outside of the 2 months where he managed to hit 2 home runs each, his numbers were absolutely terrible, he had 3 months with WRC+ between 45 and 53. Unless he managed to miraculously gear his swing for more power at this stage of his career he may be a total dud at the plate this season.

Espinal has options, so it's really not much of a battle.

Panik isn't on the 40 man, so options don't enter in to it for him. We'd have to toss someone off the 40 man to have him start the year in Toronto as well, so that may complicate matters, depending on how things shake out.

40 man cut candidates:

Anthony Alford (certainly gone)

Thomas Pannone (could be cut)

Hector Perez (unlikely)

Billy McKinney (unlikely?)

Brandon Drury (very unlikely?)

He doesn't have the launch angle to hit any fly balls, let alone ones that leave the yard.

If they cut Drury it would be hilarious.

Is there anyone other than Panik who needs to be added to the 40 man? If not everyone should be safe but for Alford.

But if someone like Brian Moran or AJ Cole makes the team then we'll have to make a move. Or maybe they put Dolis on the 60 man and give him 2 months to get his strength back and get ready.

His statcast page tells you all you need to know about the complete lack of a power tool for Panik. He's bottom of the barrel in hard hit percentage, barrel % and exit velocity. It's a momentous event now when he connects for a home run. A two homerun month constitutes a power surge. The true prototypical slapdick hitter if ever there was one.

Grichuk goes Oppo Taco!

Jansen just missed going B2B with Grich for the 2nd time, he'll take that 3 bagger!

Espinal goes yard!

Danny Jansen is hitting .529 with a 1.953 OPS and only 1 K this Spring.

Ray Borucki for hitting coach?

Up to me, Panik out, Scooter in

What's up with Scooter? Coming off 2 huge seasons. Tears his groin and was awful last year Now is unsigned? 1 year removed from 4.5 WAR....is he holding out for a starting gig? Why isn't he signed?

Did Ryan's dad suggest something, or did they work together this offseason?

No idea. Better target than Puig, IMO. Biggio can split time between 2B and OF.

Scooter is still only 29.

They worked together all offseason to help Jansen come up with a hitting routing before games, and also did stuff with Blast Motion. Jansen said he had absolutely no routine for hitting before games all of last season, but he's going to strictly adhere to it this season.

Where does that rank in the Jays Parents hall of fame. Ahead of Lind's Mom's medical assessments, but behind Rick Litsch PM'ing Jays fans who didn't like his son.
