Otto Lopez with 2 doubles...

Wow... kids swinging it today. Pruitt hit a dinger.

SS ended up splitting W's.

Do we really have any positional battles right now? 5th starter and the bullpen I suppose?

What about the bench? Are Alford and Panik really going to make the team? Seems like those two, Drury and McGuire will be the bench.

I'd say Thornton, Yamaguchi and Anthony Kay, lulz

I’m a few seats away from a NYY scout who is relaying Pearson’s pitch speed to the dugout since there’s no gun here.

Nothing untoward, but I think I’ve cracked his code.

Pearson was 97-99 with the fastball in striking out the side in order in top1. Slider hit 90, no biggie.

The funny thing is, his slider at one point was actually 92-93 mph (When he pitched in the AFL post-injury it was gunned at 92.5). During last season, he worked on it with the coaches to improve the shape & break to create more separation between the 97-102 heater and his slider, I think he also mentioned tweaking his grip. This was awhile ago. The sweet spot became 87-90 mph with better breaking action and more consistency on the delivery.

Mitchell just wrote an article about this. https://www.tsn.ca/a-late-february-projection-of-the-toronto-jays-opening-day-roster-1.1448520

He has Tellez, Panik, Alford and Fisher on the bench with Drury on the outside looking in. But he also doesn't have anyone listed as the DH so I'm not sure how helpful his article is.

Didn't read the article, but if Tellez makes the team I'd imagine he'd be the starting DH. Fisher hasn't proven anything with the bat or the glove, Alford is probably a 4th OF at best, and Panik is Panik.

If Tellez is a DH, his bat better be a shitload better than it has been. Otherwise, that spot should go to someone with positional value.

Honestly I don't know why they haven't signed Puig. Can be the primary DH and play the field occasionally as well. Seems like an easy fix. Tellez optioned to AAA, Fisher as the 4th OF, and Alford traded to Baltimore for international money (because that's probably what will happen at some point) to clear up a 40 man roster spot.

Yes, it is weird that Puig is still out there without a job. Seems to be an ideal fit for Toronto.

It makes me wonder if the Jays don't see Puig as a good fit because of the likelihood of on the field shenanigans that seem to follow the guy.

26th man isn't guaranteed to be a pitcher so you never know we might take an extra outfielder, or even Tellez if he has a good spring training.

RF and DH are the biggest uncertainties but good chance neither has a full time first choice.

Shapiro's recent q&a with the Star made specific reference to looking at a player's makeup and mentality when assessing whether to sign them. Got to assume they think Puig would be a bad influence on the kids.

Panik sucks. I hope he doesn't make the team. Even a bench spot is better used on a young player with actual upside.

I think the most likely scenario is a bench of Fisher, Panik, Alford, and McGuire, with Tellez at DH. They seemed to imply that Bichette is going to play 150+ games at short next year, so they don't really care to have a SS on the bench (Espinal likely gets the call up if Bo has to miss time). The OF of Gurriel/Grichuk/Hernandez is a scary mix of injury prone and inconsistent, so two extra OF's on the bench may not be a bad idea. Biggio can cover 1B and OF, and Shaw can cover 3B, so there's some versatility there. I prefer keeping DH open so players can move around, but Shatkins seems to like Tellez.

Sounds like Drury was tendered a contract just to keep his rights and put him in AAA. They must really, really like him.

Gurriel is getting reps at 1B too which supports the need for an extra outfielder on the roster. I'm not convinced Tellez makes the roster over Drury though (even though I'd be happy with that - I've never liked Drury!), with Hernandez probably getting a significant number of games at DH.

You're nuts. Drury is going to get 300 at bats off the bench. Tellez is going to AAA and Alford is not making these teams.

This front office isnt going to waste a roster spot on a 300 lb. DH who is an average hitter just because he hit a few bombs in the spring.

Tellez is terrible. Dont know why people dont understand that he would need to be 120 wrc+ hitter to have any value and he doesnt walk enough to be that hitter

I don't see both Drury and Panik on the roster together. Seems like they'd have the same role except Panik can at least act like a competent big league hitter every now and then. I'm only going by the article that Panik is in the lead to make the team. If that's the case, then I would think Drury heads to AAA. I'm not a fan of Tellez either, especially as a DH, but if he's making the team, then I can't imagine he'd be a bench player since he provides no defensive value at all. He's either the starting DH or in Buffalo, imo.

If they like Fisher as much as they seem to, then they could leave DH open and have a five man crew of Fisher, Panik, Drury, Alford, and McGuire (one of them would play the field/DH, most likely Fisher, while the other four on the bench). But again that puts Drury and Panik both on the bench and that seems like a pointless situation to be in, especially since Drury has been awful lately.

Yeah, a few ways they can round out the roster. Could really do with a Gurriel like breakout from someone as that bench looks very light on hitting.

Shaw won't be in there vs lefties, and they'll be facing Sale Opening Day

Not anymore....Sale will start the year on the IL with an elbow issue (and sickness?)

f*** Drury, he had his chance. I'd take Panik over him. Also, you don't like watching Tellez hitting those towering golf shots?!?!?

Ryu got out of a 1st and 3rd nobody out jam, unscathed.

Audio link ---> http://www.volokit.com/volostream/mlb-games/twins-vs-blue-jays-audio-only/

Ryu gave up a monster shot to Wiel over the batters eye.

Cave hit a no doubter off Bass.

McGuire hit a dinger off Dobnak in the 3rd and Kirk just got the Jays 2nd hit in the 9th.

Kevin Smith two out RBI's to tie the game in the 9th. Game over.

Starting calling him John Daly.
