I can't find updated projections but just from my own. They project about 9 games ahead of us still.

Is this a sign of a fire sale though? I can't see them just stopping at those two if they're straight up not trying to win in the next year or two.

Re-tool... I could see them go after Walker now. They couldn't let Betts leave and receive nothing.

Yes. Jays now stack up pretty well with Boston, talent wise.

They are a lot like last year's Jays team with a little more star power. They don't really have a viable starter after Sale and Rodriguez, nor do they have a farm system to speak of. The offense is studs and duds, with poor options at several positions, flanked by some stars.

Kind of wish we got in on that Maeda action, hes cheap.

His acquisition cost was a top pitching prospect, so he wasn't exactly cheap to acquire. We're looking at SWR+ likely, which isn't worth it at all for us.

Looks like the Angels-Pederson trade has a starter going to the Angels and another prospect going to the Dodgers. The starter could be Stripling?

Now that's interesting. You gotta think it's someone like Gonsolin or Stripling going to the Angels.

They have Could have moved Graterol to the pen and got the same upgrade. This moves Dobnak to the minors when Pineda comes back. Not sure what happens if Rich Hill is healthy. They have a lot of risky pitchers...so they have mitigated the risk a bit but I just don't think it upgrades them.

Why do you think Maeda sucks so bad? He's been pretty solid as a mostly starter ever since he's been in the league. Close to 2.5 WAR a year. No way moving Graterol to the bullpen matches that.

Edit: Where'd you read this?

Reset the luxury tax. Instead of 50% penalty they will be back down to 20%. So they can just spend again next year when the penalty amount also goes up again. In fact they are probably paying a lot of Price's salary in 2021 and 2022, but not 2020.

It's the 1.5 win starter they won't be giving innings to that I'm calculating. Right now their pitching staff projects to 15 wins. I'd be surprised if this gets them over 16 when you take away innings from others. It's not a needle mover for me. As I said it mitigates risk as they will have injuries and you should know what you are getting from whoever picks up those innings. Then there is the fact that he's moving away from Dodgers Stadium. I think it's a net zero trade and probably could have got a better upgrade for Graterol. But considering they have already increased payroll by $40M this is a safe cheap option to add this depth.

I guess I'd have to see the starter depth to know that for sure but that makes sense.

I like what the Dodgers did here. Price and Maeda are pretty much the same talent wise, so they don't downgrade at all there. It'll be interesting to see how much money the Sox are including. Losing the 5 years control of Verdugo won't hurt the Dodgers too much, since they got a top 10 player in return. Since they traded for Betts before the start of the season they'll also gain a pick if he ends up leaving at the end of the year.

Sportrac already has Price's salary adjusted to 16 mil. Did the sox eat half his salary? I still think Price could bounce back next year. Price at 16 mil a year for 3 years is pretty decent.

The Sox went down fast after winning it all 2 years ago.

The thought that a team like the Sox, with their money, let a home grown top 5 player in the league go seems insane. You'd think they'd plan for that extension and have the money to take care of it.

Sounds like the Angels are giving up a pretty decent prospect if this is all true.

I don't think so, well from following this dude.

This is what happens when you put Dave Dombrowski in charge. At least for the Sox, they actually won a championship.

He wasn't interested. He wants 400 mil+ and was/is determined to go into FA.

If he was willing to talk extension before free agency he'd be signed by now.

Betts has been adamant about testing free agency. He turned down $200m two years ago, and apparently wants over $400m. I don't blame him. Someone as great as him should maximize his earnings, and he's confident enough to bet on himself. The Red Sox may have been able to extend him if they gave him Trout money (assuming Betts was open to an extension now) but they weren't going to do that with their luxury tax concerns.
