Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2020 Posted December 27, 2020 RIP Phil Niekro... IIRC first Jay in the HOF, correct?
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 27, 2020 Posted December 27, 2020 IIRC first Jay in the HOF, correct? Most likely, yes.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 holy s*** The pitching rich get richer. I knew Patino would be in that deal before I even saw it. I love Wilcox also..
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Thats unreal for Tampa. s***
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 That's less than I expected the Padres to give up, but still a decent haul for Tampa. Patino will probably be an ace in a couple of years and Mejia will get a chance to live up to his potential.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Sounds like Hunt is a real prospect too
King Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Not a fan of this for the Rays TBH.
THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Ok so now that we know the cost for Snell, what do we think the cost is for each of below SPs? - Yu Darvish - Carlos Carrasco - Luis Castillo - Sonny Gray - German Marquez
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 The Rays must like Mejia a lot. More like they think they can fix Patino’s control issues..they obviously have the track record. Don’t have the same batter whisperer thing going though
King Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 The Rays must like Mejia a lot. I don't think this has as much to do with Mejia as it does to do with Patino. Mejia is just a guy they can option for a year then DFA if/when he sucks. Longenhagen is saying that Hunt is a top 100 prospect for him so if true that could be interesting as well.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 What’s the Jay equivalent? SWR (Pearson a little too good obv), Manoah, Riley Adams... and I don’t know who to compare Mejia to
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 The Rays must like Mejia a lot. He has 1 option so maybe they think he can find his bat in between majors and minors (if they happen) but Hunt is the number 2 target here. Defensive catcher (BA called him an elite framer) who's bat and power are coming around...most Rays guy ever.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 I would’ve expected better pieces on top of Patino for Snell tbh. Last I read, there were question marks about Mejias ability to stick at catcher (plus he hasn’t really hit in almost a seasons worth of PA’s) and Hunt is a prep catcher with okay minor league numbers. Wilcox is a nice get, but still feels a little light for the Rays.
xposbrad Verified Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 SWR isn't even a top 50 prospect. Patino is top 25. Patino has 1/2 potential.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 What’s the Jay equivalent? SWR (Pearson a little too good obv), Manoah, Riley Adams... and I don’t know who to compare Mejia to I'd just use Pearson if you really want to build a comparable. Patino is an elite young arm too and more similar to him than SWR. Pearson = Patino Adams < Hunt Manoah > Wilcox Mejia..... = Trent Thornton or Kevin Smith? Something s***** I think
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Not a fan of this for the Rays TBH. I feel like the Jays could have beat this pretty easy, but the Rays probably wouldn't trade to the Jays without a much bigger ask. Hopefully this lowers the ask for Darvish. Maybe we can land him.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Luis Patino would have been untouchable at times within the last two years. I think he is 80% of the equation here for TB. Everything else is a garnish
King Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Hunt seems like the wildcard here. If you just look at his Fangraphs page he seems like a nobody. But Longenhagens tweets are pretty optimistic and he sounds like a dude. Have to remember we haven't seen these guys put up stats since 2019. So who really knows.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 I'd just use Pearson if you really want to build a comparable. Patino is an elite young arm too and more similar to him than SWR. Pearson = Patino Adams < Hunt Manoah > Wilcox Mejia..... = Trent Thornton or Kevin Smith? Something s***** I think I was going off first glance of Hunt. Apparently you guys have other info
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 You guys are under appreciating Wilcox, huge get in this deal as well!
King Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Yes Wilcox is a big piece. Coming around on it for the Rays. Still like it for the Padres side though.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Actually assuming Laila’s comp is correct (and I agree) and it’d have to be Pearson ++, I guess I’d pass on Snell and I really wanted him. Jays just aren’t good enough to justify it but I can see how a legit WS contender could

Ray Verified Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Interesting note that Mejia is a year away from arbitration. I forgot he missed a large portion of a year due to injuries and was on the major league DL accruing service time.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 holy s*** Wow, man! Holy f***... good trade. I still like this for the Padres, holy f***, are they good.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 This trade makes sense for both sides and their overall situations Makes rhe Padres even stronger contender vs their monster divisional opponent And it makes sense for keeping things rolling in Tampa for the future. But in the short term in 2021 do the Rays take a real step back after letting Morton and Snell go? They will make more moves to fill out the roster for 2021 but are they competing for the division title this year?
Ryu In My House Verified Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Wow, man! Holy f***... good trade. I still like this for the Padres, holy f***, are they good. What could the Jays have offered? Manoah, Jansen + 2 top 20? I think I make that trade.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted December 28, 2020 Posted December 28, 2020 Tampa did extremely well, IMO, considering years of control. Patino has top of rotation stuff, just needs to get his emotions under control.
