baubau Verified Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Really happy for the Dodgers. I love it when teams try to push them selves over the top and continue to extend their competitive window. The Dodgers window doesn't look to be closing anytime soon and that is incredible given their most recent runs.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 I know the Red Sox have near unlimited financial resources in baseball terms, but this is one example the luxury tax has influenced a team to make a significant franchise decision. We have no idea if Mookie would’ve changed his mind and extended with Boston, while Verdugo will probably end up a decent offensive player. But we can’t argue this outcome was financially driven.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Author Posted July 22, 2020 With Covid and the new CBA on the horizon now's the time to try to extend stars. Why take the risk of being a free agent in a potentially depressed market?

Why take the risk of being a free agent in a potentially depressed market? Yeah, Betts may not have signed an extension in a normal season, but with an unpredictable economy in both MLB and the country, he became more open to it. Smart on his part, especially if he still gets $350m plus.
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Including 2020, the new deal is expected to keep Mookie Betts in a Dodger uniform for 13 years at more than $380 million.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 10/300 is such a laughably bad offer for a player of his caliber and age.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 10/300 is such a laughably bad offer for a player of his caliber and age. It's interesting how baseball economics have reached the point where a 300 million dollar contract extension offer is considered to be an insult.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 There should be, by all indications, a vaccine available by the end of this year or early next year. If that's the case, including improvements to therapeutics and more knowledge around the virus, we should be like 90% back to normal at least by next ST. Maybe best case scenario, but I think this will be the first and last situation of its kind for the foreseeable future.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Heyman is saying it's 12 years for "about $350M". His 2020 salary is $27m ($10 million prorated), so he's looking at 13/360 (or thereabouts) from 2020 onwards if Heyman's number is correct. Or 12.37/360 since 2020 is playing 37% of the normal schedule. Baseball agents don't seem to look at AAV, but rather total value of the contract, so Betts is getting about $29m AAV when he's worth a lot more than that, but gets the biggest non Trout contract in MLB history in terms of overall dollars.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Completely agree. Most teams don't ever get a realistic opportunity to lock in a true superstar like Mookie - that's a right acquired in the trade that is not captured by any normal surplus value calculation. The Red Sox look like a second rate organization now and their brand is tarnished. Bellinger and Betts is a potentially legendary tandem. Oh this is 100% about the Red Sox legacy of being a racist organization (last team to employ a black player, by a long shot IIRC) and Boston in general being filled with racist morons. Or at least I hope some left-wing commentator spins it off as such. I want to go full Grant-level Schadenfreude on this hilarious development.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Author Posted July 22, 2020 Wouldn’t say no to minor league offer to Cecil, but good chance his career is done now.

When it's a contract extending to age 40, who really cares about AAV. Everyone knows that there's a good chance the last 3+ years are lame duck seasons anyways, and it's essentially higher AAV for productive years with a salary deferral.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 You sure? Sounds like he could continue his baseball career as a live action batting practice pitcher.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Probably guarantees a Seager trade after this season.
Ray Verified Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Jays could be in such a fantastic spot to add impact free agent talent this offseason. Competitive window will be opening, and we'll be in a great spot to take advantage of the depressed market. Tulo will also be officially off the books, and there won't be any players with huge arb raises. George Springer 6 years/$120M deal Trevor Bauer 1 year/$25M (if he stays true to his word and signs one year deals in free agency) Jake Odorizzi 3 years/$54M Joc Pederson 4 years $60M? That's an additional $78M in payroll for 2021 which would still give us tons of flexibility to add considering our financial commitments moving forward are peanuts.
Ray Verified Member Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 Probably guarantees a Seager trade after this season. I wouldn't be surprised. Lux is more or less ready. They could probably get a really nice return for Seager and keep that farm system strong without losing a beat.

I like Seager as the Jays 3B His injuries are behind him, expect him to go back to Seagering

Has to be done before first pitch 25 hours from now, but there seems to be optimism. Hope was to go from 10 playoff teams to 16.

The best chance the Jays would have at a playoff spot in 4 years, and they'll be using someone's backyard as a home ballpark. Either way, hope it happens. Even if you're not a fan of expanded playoffs, the one year it would make sense is in a 60 game season. It would mean a good team that starts off poorly isn't as penalized for it, and an average team that flukes their way in will have to work that much harder in the playoffs to keep advancing. Of course if this happens it would be purely a financial move, but still, would help the game for this season.

Playoffs may be played in a bubble, especially if there's lots of covid related disruption in the regular season.
