I'm also no one commented on the rumored three divisions.

I think a lot of the games will be played at the Roger's center in October. if the season goes late you would want to be in a dome.

Doesn’t make any sense. I doubt there will even be any games in Toronto at all. Doesn’t make sense to go through the hassle of crossing the border numerous times when there’s tons of parks they can use in Florida/Arizona/othe minor league parks.

Obviously, Grant. If you have 3 million people in a concentrated area, it's pretty hard to maintain social distancing. It's so easy to go by per capita while living in a town of 10 people and reporting no infections because there's like one square kilometer per person.

We're getting there.

So a city where people don't maintain social distancing and the virus is running rampant would be a ________ place to play baseball?

A) good

B) bad

Finally got confirmation that a refund is being processed for MLB tickets. Assume that means teams have been warned that the season is going to be cancelled or at least restricted attendances if they do play any games.

I heard this morning games up until May 31 can be refunded or credited towards future games, but I cannot confirm

I got an email from the Astros saying they’ll now be processing my opening week tickets as the prospect of the games being rearranged is “unlikely”. Not sure if it’s the same policy as the Jays, and I don’t know what’s happening with later/ season tickets etc.

Then just argue that baseball shouldn't be played anywhere and go back to living in fear. You're insufferable.

Just because doesn't support your Trump style ideology of opening everything regardless of the cost doesn't mean they live in fear.

Life has to return to normal at some point, even if the virus is still present. All I'm saying is that playing baseball in a region that has handled the crisis extremely poorly and remains a hotspot is not the best answer for this season. I support plans that have teams playing in regions that present less of a public risk. That way we can get our baseball without having a bunch of people die because of it.

Grant, you forget that summer is fast approaching. Sunlight has been shown to cut the survival half-life of the virus on surfaces from 6 hours to 2 minutes, and in aerosols from 60 minutes to 1.5 minutes. Remember the streets of Wuhan being sprayed with disinfectant in January and February? Summer will essentially do the same thing to our streets.

There will be baseball this summer, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's played everywhere.

That would be consistent with studies done in the last couple of months, but it doesn't mean that the virus will be eradicated. Influenza is also sensitive to heat and humidity, but is always present.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if the province of Ontario and particularly the city of Toronto allow any baseball to be played in the Rogers Centre. I think if we get baseball then it will be in a different city. As long as it's on radio or TV then I'll be perfectly happy.

I don't give a single s*** where it's played. I don't think my enjoyment would be all that affected watching the games in some s***** ST park relative to a full MLB park.

I feel the same way.

Yeah seriously. Without fans it really doesn't matter where the games are played. If all of them are played in Arizona, Texas, and Florida, then so be it.

This, and we have a new park in Dunedin.

One of the college summer wood bat leagues, the Coast Plain League has announced their plans to begin their season in late June. Interesting to see they will be playing at 50% capacity and their approach to spacing people. Not sure how applicable something like this would be in MLB but interesting none the less.

Either way, the scouting looks will be off the chain.

I'd also like to chime in that while COVID cases are going to be much higher per capita in Toronto, opioid addiction is going to be much higher per capita in smaller towns. Why? Because it's boring there, there are few economic opportunities and the demographics have a higher concentration of poor white people who are highly susceptible to Chinese fentanyl tactics.

One of these two issues is going to go away in six months or a year. Guess which one.

Neither.

Your fantasy of people being quarantined forever is quite perplexing.

I mean, he's absolutely correct that Covid will not be gone in 6 months. It's a ludicrous pipe dream to expect that it will be. There's a chance there might be a vaccine available in a year or so, until then, we're dealing with this s*** one way or the other.

I mean, do we really want to turn this into another coronavirus thread?

22 years ago today, on the WGN, I watched Cubs rookie Kerry Wood throw a one-hit, 20-strikeout gem against the Astros (in his fifth career start). I think it's the greatest pitching performance of all time. It's got the highest Game Score in both the Bill James original version and the Tom Tango v2.0. If that's too advanced, just look at something as simple as strikeouts above expectation.

Screen-Shot-2020-05-06-at-11-16-12.png

The only hit against came in the third inning with a grounder off the glove of a Cubs infielder that I still think should've been called an error.

Wood was just the second pitcher in MLB history to strike out 20 in a nine-inning game (Clemens in 1986 and 1996), and only two others have done it since (Randy Johnson in 2001; Max Scherzer in 2016). Outside of Fernando Tatis Sr. hitting two grand slams in the same inning, the 20-strikeout game is perhaps the rarest feat in baseball.

It's a shame injuries plagued Wood his whole career, because his 12.6 K/9 that year not only led MLB, it's the sixth-best single-season mark ever.

Are they replaying that game on the MLB network today?

I think I remember watching it also. I watched a lot of WGN games back in that era. Wood and Prior were incredible - but a cautionary tale of building around your rotation.

I'm not really watching old games, so I've no idea, but you're right they should replay this one today. It's the greatest pitching performance of all time, and it took place during the day at Wrigley Field, and it was against the Houston Astros (who won 102 games that year, led the Killer B's). It checks off so many boxes it should be played on loop all week!

How would you guys compare this game to Kerry Wood? I get that it was a different era, but it was still highly irregular. We'll be lucky to see something like 91 Jack Morris again, let alone this. The Cardinals lineup featured 4 Hall of Famers and another top 5 MVP candidate that year.
