Laika Community Moderator Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 Yeah as exciting as it is to have Hatch start the year on the MLB team, he'll almost certainly get the boot when Chase Anderson, Pearson are activated or when the rosters dwindle to 28 and 26 players later in the season. If there is a revolving door of Covid ILs all year long, maybe not.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 There's a realistic chance that Vlad shows up from first pitch as 150 wRC+ monster. Adding that kind of bat to the heart of a lineup that looks like it will have a bunch of hitters who are a bit above average really makes things look better. I feel like if his avg launch angle can tweak 3 to 4° higher, closer to his norm in the minors, his wRC+ could spike drastically. 6.3° is near the very bottom for power hitters (AKA groundball machine). He’s always been a line drive hitter in the minors and never had to aim for the fences for the ball to get there, the exit velo is elite.
devo Verified Member Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 Boxcar was a poor Canadian kid with immense BJMB talent. Gets signed to host a podcast for zero dollars as a young man in a free country. I think it's pretty reasonable to expect someone like that to become a bit of a douchebag. It's kind of like poor people winning the lottery. They don't know how to handle it. Boxcar obviously worked super hard to get to the top of BJMB, then got smug and I guess took his foot off the gas. He realizes that now and I'm honestly surprised he would admit openly about his arrogance. That doesn't really seem like a guy who dodges responsibility. Obviously, on the BJMB, getting arrogant is a death sentence. Boxcar recognizes that and is trying to overcome it. Frankly, I'm a bit surprised by guys like Jim not recognizing Boxcar's difficult path through life. He regrets how he acted a couple weeks ago before political posts were banned. Should that stain his reputation for the rest of his life? Most BJMB readers hated him when he first came up and then started to drop off. We've all seen the video of Jim chucking Boxcar's luggage in the street. We've also seen Boxy and Jim take the CN Tower edgewalk together when they were here. Whatever Boxcar was in his younger days, I am having a very hard time finding evidence that he's the same person now. People can grow. I mean, I think if King (RIP) ever dropped off from his utterly elite form, people might be saying the same thing about him. Final point, even IF there's a small gap between him and Spanky (which I disagree with, but let's roll with it) it's hard to deny that there is a sleeping giant in Boxcar that could be awakened, a late career resurgence. He's a genuine 5 tool poster. Would anyone be shocked to see him put up 4 good posts this year? Maybe, but you could buy it based on his obvious talent. Even if he never hits that, and stays as a 2-ish good posts per year contributor, that's still a massive improvement over Spanky at a quite minimal cost. Spanky is a terrific bench option on a good message board, he can s***-post at an average level with coherence and cover all three main board threads reasonably ok, so I don't want to get rid of him. He's just very obviously not starting calibre.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 I love Puig and think he could still be a monster like Boxy said but the fact that every other team has passed on him speaks louder than his Steamer projections or perceived upside. Puig>>>>>Teoscar

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 Were the terms of his agreement with the Braves ever leaked? Curious if he's holding out for like $10M or something (waiting for injuries or COVID to strike so he can get paid)

Replacing a couple of words here and there doesn't require a lot of effort or creativity. But at least you got the seals clapping, so congrats!

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2020 Posted July 24, 2020 Or maybe he isn't and was waiting on a better contract. No one knows. Puig was a poor Cuban kid with immense talent. It's kind of like poor people winning the lottery. They don't know how to handle it. Puig obviously worked super hard to get to the majors, then got paid and I guess took his foot off the gas. Obviously, in MLB, getting lazy is a death sentence. Puig recognizes that and is trying to overcome it. Frankly, I'm a bit surprised by guys like Max not recognizing Puig's difficult path through life. He regrets how he acted when he was younger. Should that stain his reputation for the rest of his life? The Dodgers hated him when he first came up and then started to drop off. He's just very obviously not starting calibre. Your beautiful soliloquy has me totally convinced that the Jays should bring Puig aboard. He is exactly the kind of solid veteran that we want to sign to really show Vladdy Jr. the proper way to be a pro. Get yourself a nice contract and then you can just coast the rest of your career. While he's at it he could teach the young Jays the best ways to start dust-ups with the opposition as well. A lazy unmotivated dude like Puig would fit in perfectly with super driven guys like Bo Bichette and Nate Pearson.

Ray Verified Member Posted July 24, 2020 Posted July 24, 2020 Despite all the histrionics that went on to get to this point, let’s take a moment to appreciate that we will be seeing Bo and Vlad in live game action today, and Hyun-Jin Ryu is a f***ing Blue Jay. For better or worse, this young core has rejuvenated my passion that I feel had been lacking since 2017. Lets do this!
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2020 Posted July 24, 2020 That would be Brutal to have all games on the road. Really feel like you need some kind of stability with a home stadium. I hope we're allowed at Camden, we're all playing the same teams so I don't see the same issues.
