Not to mention Mark Buehrle who was in the same rotation. One guy throws 86 and gets outs - amazing television! The other guy throws a 79 mph knuckler and gets outs - horrible to watch!

Mark Buehrle was a f***ing treat to watch on the mound so you better wash your mouth son. It's amazing what one man could do with an 86 mph fastball and a wide assortment of junk. Poor man's Kyle Hendricks.

Dickey with his f***ing trick pitch would have one or two good innings tops and then get absolutely lit the f*** up with walks to everyone, passed f***ing balls gallore to his pet Josh Thole who was like Billy Hamilton without the speed. Absolutely miserable experience.

Also part of the despair of watching Dickey pitch was knowing that you gave up Syndergaard for the opportunity. That sour taste in your mouth would never go away and it still hasn't.

Dickey's WAR his first year with the Jays was 1.8. Roark's WAR last season was 2.0. According to MLB pipeline d'Arnaud and Thor were ranked 11th and 83rd prospects in the 2012 top 100 list. If the Jays gave up Pearson and Groshans for Roark, people would go crazy.

For a price like that we should have got a much younger real ace.

Gotta use RA9-WAR for a knuckleballer!

um - he was coming off a 4.7 WAR season and the NL Cy Young award. His velocity was also trending up (leading to improved results). He was also owed next to nothing, which was about all we could afford at the time (apparently). To be fair, it was similar to the Pirates trading Glasnow + Meadows for Archer (especially when you factor in Dickey's reasonable extension) - with the difference being their age.

C'mon, you can't say "trending up" when you're talking about a 38 year old. Health alone there were enough red flags to decorate the Kremlin during Stalin Appreciation Day.

WAR doesn't work for pitchers who are exceptional fielders, control baserunners, and influence BABIP. Dickey was all three of these things. WAR also doesn't account for the value of the Dickey effect, which is worth at least 1 win per season.

Dickey provided the value of a borderline all-star during his tenure excluding his final year.

Dickey was good here. I think almost everyone here recognizes that. Watching his starts was terrible though. He very reliably put up 32 useful starts a year that nobody wanted to watch.

I love watching knuckleballers.

I said his knuckleball velocity was trending up - and it was

73.4 MPH in 2008 to 78.1 MPH in 2012. There was lots of information about how he was adding velocity on purpose, which lead to his spike in K's. Yeah he was old, but he was adding velocity as he aged. I believe the back and knee injuries he had (and pitched through) factored into the drop in velo when he arrived in TO and, ultimately made him less effective.

Yeah, and the back and knee injuries were expected because he was 38. DON'T f***ING EXPECT SOMEONE IN THEIR LATE THIRTIES TO BE f***ING RELIABLE HEALTH WISE

f***, I'm 41, and I feel like I'm going to die every single morning when I wake up. This isn't shocking.

Atkins on TSN saying they see upside with his breaking ball and increasing the usage.

Yeah, most reports suggest he doesn't use his slider (reportedly his best pitch) enough.

Yes, but they won't. The Roark signing is basically waiving the white flag. They are saying, we have zero intention of competing over the next 2 years. We're not short on arms. Zeuch, Panonne, Murphy, Merryweather, Kay, Borucki, Reid-Foley.

Our rotation is going to be Shoemaker, Anderson, Pearson in mid May, Thornton and now Roark.

I fail to see how we needed to pay Roark 2 years at 12 million a year.

Right about Roark, but damn that list of “arms” lol.

We literally signed Ryu like 2 weeks later

Understand... I was just trying to bust balls about the 2nd part saying the signing was a positive.

You want a challenge? Find a signing, trade, draft pick, that Spanky doesn't think is positive.

I'll wait

Hes a great company man. I'm sure he must be employed by the Blue Jays secretly lol.

I remember explicitly stating that I didn't want him back even though he was worth the money because I hated seeing him on the mound, so you are correct.

Also, how dare you compare him to a gem like O'Day (and Laika to Buehrle for that matter). Those guys had the decency to at least pound the zone with their s***** stuff, and Buehrle was good for a crisp 2-hour game every once in a while. Dickey was a mess of full-counts, passed balls and wild pitches, and always managed to look utterly shocked when someone hit a sub-80 mph meatball 430 feet. He also has an annoying face. The whole package was of similar aesthetic caliber to watching CC Sabathia and his giant gut flopping all over the place. Very off-putting and unpleasant to watch.

lol... this wins! Here's your bump dinger.

Roark is going to make the Jamie Garcia signing look like a bargain. If somehow the Jays went out and got Ryu, I could overlook this signing. I'm not holding my breath though.

I also said this. They went out and got Ryu and my confidence in management took a 180 when we signed Ryu. I did not like the Roark signing when many others liked it, but I'm wrong all the time. I have an affinity for injury prone high risk players with upside. It's my weakness. We'd probably have a lot of money on the IL if I was GM.

And find a post or topic where Eeyore here doesn't say something passive-aggressive, or pessimistic. Plus I gauge talent truthfully, y'all lame.

I went through a bunch of threads quickly, managed to find one.

https://www.bluejaysmessageboard.com/threads/9440-Toronto-acquires-Vogelbach-for-cash

lol... Why?

I don't really see how/why the team would want to carry him and Tellez.

Right? Unless Tellez is on his way out?

Vogelbach wasn't actually complete garbage and we essentially got him for free, he just didn't fit here.

Okay, they signed Ryu?! Dumbass!

Thought you were signaling that the Roark move was positive. Guess you meant it was a positive that they were spending money. I'll show myself out lol
