TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 20, 2020 Author Posted January 20, 2020 If the trends of last year (where those that don't make their ballot known don't vote for Walker on anywhere near the rate as those that do) it is going to be tight for Larry tomorrow. I was going to do a board contest to the best shots at those that voted for Sosa, Man Ram, Vizquel, Kent, Wagner and Andruw Jones but not Walker. But it turns out even out of the public ones there are too many. Hopefully one of these votes won't be a difference maker.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Why does Andruw Jones get the shaft from voters? Statistically, he's the best defensive CF of all-time by a significant margin (much the way Ozzie is the best defensive SS of all-time) and posted 67 WAR. How on earth does Omar Vizquel, the 9th best defensive SS of all-time who posted 42.5 WAR get more votes than Jones? Do we think this is based on assumptions that Jones was on PEDs?
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Wilner has been losing his mind on twitter the past while.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 So is Walker getting in? man it's going to be close. He's got all 9 votes from first time voters. Of the handful of guys who aren't voting this year that voted last year, I'm guessing most didn't vote for Walker. I just hope in the end he gets in. I don't care if he gets exactly 75%.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Nice summary from Shi Davidi: "Ideally, each Hall of Famer should have a real legacy, on a team, a city, a sport, a country. From the kids who grew up playing baseball on Larry Walker Field in Maple Ridge, the Rockies franchise retiring his No. 33, to the Canadians, young and old, he still coaches on the national team, Walker did, which is why I feel he’s worthy no matter how you frame the evaluation."
Beans Verified Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 photo hosting Many Hall of Fame voters share images of their ballots or write columns explaining their votes before the results are announced. Based on what's been made public, most projections have Derek Jeter near 100% and Larry Walker hovering around the 75% needed to get in.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Looks like Walker is going down to the wire. The first time voters are helping him and of those who make their ballots public he's doing well enough but I feel like the dinosaurs are the ones that are anti-Walker and they tend not to reveal their ballots as often.

There's a lot of head scratchers with the majority of the public ones it seems. Lots of strange choices...
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Walker's in!!! f*** yeah. Harold Baines being in and Walker off the ballot would be a bridge too far.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Liberal journos taking out their frustrations on Schilling still. He's eeking up there at least. Along with Clemens and Bonds. f***ing Vizquel had a strong showing though. He probably gets in unless new blood replaces the dinosaur voters.
BTS Community Moderator Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 It remains absurd that Schilling isn’t in. IIRC he doesn’t even have any PED baggage like Bonds Clemens. I’d be interested in knowing if the young FanGraphs type voters are leaving him off their ballots.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Larry Walker should throw out the first pitch on Opening Day at Coors this year and then do the first pitch in TO on Canada Day.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Lol. Who's the one guy that didn't vote for Jeter?
Beans Verified Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Lol. Who's the one guy that didn't vote for Jeter? 396 out of 397 votes...
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Lol. Who's the one guy that didn't vote for Jeter? I'm guessing he put checked the don't make my ballot public box.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 I'm guessing he put checked the don't make my ballot public box. Isn't it mandatory? If it isn't, it should be. There's no reason for this entire process to not be transparent.
Beans Verified Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Larry Walker went from 55% last year to over 76% this year! Congratulations to him!
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 21, 2020 Posted January 21, 2020 Larry Walker went from 55% last year to over 76% this year! Congratulations to him! That's a nice leap. Tells me Vizquel getting 52% this year will get him in.
Beans Verified Member Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 I can't believe Vizquel is over 50% in his third year of eligibility!

Based on what's been made public, most projections have Derek Jeter near 100% and Larry Walker hovering around the 75% needed to get in. To put Jeter's 99.7% into perspective, consider this: J.J. Putz and Brad Penny (and a couple others) got one vote each. So somebody said yes to Brad Penny, and somebody said no to Derek Jeter.

I think about 25% of the ballots remain anonymous
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 22, 2020 Posted January 22, 2020 Top notch sports commentary from a fellow Hall of Famer

TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 22, 2020 Author Posted January 22, 2020 I laugh that people are on a witch hunt for the one person who didn't vote for a guy that is in the Hall (and probably middle of the pack among those that are there)...yet no outrage that the greatest pitcher and greatest hitter in baseball history remain out.
