jerb Verified Member Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal Additions of Porcello, Wacha give #Mets depth to possibly move a starter, perhaps in combination with a high-priced player in his walk year - Lowrie ($9M) or, in a much less likely scenario, Cespedes ($29.5M). Goal would be to address other needs - a young catcher, for example.

jerb Verified Member Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Ben Nicholson-Smith @bnicholsonsmith Before his deal with the Mets, #BlueJays were talking with Rick Porcello. More than due diligence. There appeared to be a little traction, some mutual interest. Instead Porcello gets to rebuild value with Mets (per @Ken_Rosenthal) while Jays continue pitching search elsewhere.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 I really hope there aren't people who expected our offseason to go any differently. And to those that want to play the 'it's only December' card... Exactly who, of real consequence, is left that's a top of the rotation type guy that will realistically sign here. Jays will need to trade for someone... Which really sucks cause they're forced to move valuable assets, likely young ones, cause they aren't able to just flash the cheque book and add high-end talent AND keep their assets. We'll see what we've got in March, but I'm expecting 2020 but be similar to 2019.

I’m a little bit concerned that there’s been no rumours about what we’re asking for Giles - but maybe we’re just waiting for the free agent market to sort itself out, then sell to the highest bidder who has blown their budget elsewhere (Nats and Angels for example).

Paying FA's for their past results has never been an overly successful approach.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Wow, Davidi says Toronto was pursuing Moustakas with a level of interest that actually saw Atkins and Montoyo visit Moose at his home. They must really want a good LHB.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Corey Dickerson, Kole Calhoun, Travis Shaw are the lefties I’d be targeting.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 I always get excited for posts from jerb. He’s like an automated Blue Jays Twitter feed
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 Ryu would be awesome. He's very risky but the guy threw up almost 5 WAR last year. He could provide the exact kind of pitcher we need atop the rotation while at the same time if he does only throw 100 innings or so his contract isn't likely to be a disaster either. I'm obviously all in on 3 years and would consider 4.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 What about Rich Hill? Does he have a pulse still and would he be worth pursuing?
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 What about Rich Hill? Does he have a pulse still and would he be worth pursuing? He had elbow surgery in October and won't be ready till like mid season. He's probably looking to go to a contender at his age.

Rusty_Savage Verified Member Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 I'd take Shaw if he'd play first with some games sprinkled in at second and third. Then when Vlad needs a break he can DH and Teoscar can slide over to first for however long is needed And if Shaw falls flat on his face again, you're probably stuck with Tellez but Shaw is a great bet on being a bounce back, IMO
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 I just don’t get this board’s obsession with Ryu. He doesn’t fit our timeline and there’s no way he’s coming here on just a 3 year deal. Think of it this way. If Ryu was a free agent next year instead, would you want to sign him when he’d be just turning 34 at the beginning of the season? Your answer would surely be “depends on what he does in 2020” right? Let someone who is in win now mode (and therefore 2020 is much more important to them) overpay him instead.

Sucking the next two years does the team no good and without some better pitching we are going to do exactly that. It's hard enough to attract free agents to TO and when you're winning 70 games a year it's even harder. Ryu is good and helps us not suck, plus we are running a Rays like payroll anyway. A 3 year deal for him doesn't stop us from doing anything moving forward.

Of the available free agent starters, he is the best option that the Jays could be reasonably expected to pursue. It's not really that complicated.

Paying FA's for their past results has never been an overly successful approach. I think this approach is fine once you're already a contender (or at the very least on the cusp of being one) with an established core and young pieces that you can afford to move, but the Jays really aren't in that position. they can't afford to move meaningful prospects at this point. I know there's talk about moving Jansen or McGuire...but what are you really going to get for McGuire, and who do they plan on playing 120 games if they move Jansen?
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2019 Posted December 12, 2019 His agent is Scott Boras who will want a shitload of money Correct. The thing is, Boras doesn't get to decide the market for his players, so if nobody is going to give his players a shitload of money, he can't magically make that happen. Aaron Sanchez is a Boras client, he's not going to get a Cole contract, even though Boras would really like that.
