Would anyone be interested in signing Eric Thames to play 1B and backup OF?

It's sad that we've gotten to the point where Thames and Blue Jays are mentioned in the same breath. I remember when we used to expect a little more

I remember him being comically bad in the OF back when he was young and a lot skinnier. I can only imagine what he looks like out there now.

Yeah. 1B/DH only.

I'd prefer it if we tried to convert Hernandez to play the same role.

Hernandez is both a frustrating and intriguing case. He did make small steps to improve defensively. He just seems to lack focus at times. He's got tons of speed and a strong arm. I find the sunflower seeds throwing incredibly annoying,(I'm not sure why) but that doesn't help perception. He did have an incredibly strong second half at the plate. It's tough to bounce back after the abysmal first two months he had. I still have hopes to see a breakout offensively with the bat.

It certainly couldn't hurt to try him at first, or just us him to DH a lot. I still think he can be a close to average defensive corner outfielder, but we have a surplus corner outfielders.

Yeah exactly, I can't see a long term future for him as a full time outfielder, but as a DH/1B he could he valuable if his bat develops, and it's an area of need.

Bit of nostalgia here but how about bring back Brandon Morrow on a 1 year/$1 million type deal as a low risk/medium reward type move. Sounds like his current best offer is a minor league deal.

Obviously there's a high chance of re-injury but we have lots of holes to fill in our bullpen and he could end up being a stabilising piece. Or a deadline flip candidate if the team isn't competitive this year.

According to reports Morrow is only re-signing with the Cubs to prove his fitness. Any deal probably has incentives for making the roster out of spring training too.

Then he came back from Korea and played pretty decently. It's not like he's top tier, but damn, we need some offence from 1B. Maybe Tellez provides as much or more. Dunno. I was spitballing at any rate.

I just think that if we're looking to build a championship calibre team, I really want us to settle for more than Thames, even if it's just filler. I don't want us to be satisfied with being a team that puts together spare parts and are happy about getting 2 WAR for a 1 WAR pricetag. Maybe I'm just being greedy.

I think you are being a bit greedy. You don't need stars everywhere, you need some stars and ideally no black holes on the roster. Thames with a platoon partner can probably provide something like 2 WAR, the WS champions got mostly nothing from their collective first basemen except for Howie Kendrick who only played around 50 games there since he was a utility player. 2 WAR at first base would already be a pretty big improvement from what we got out of the position last season, and with 1B being so cheap to acquire these days it's totally fine if we fill that up with stopgap players.

Okay, but you are noticing no one wants to sign in TO, right? Sometimes beggars cannot be choosers.

I'd probably just go with an internal option rather than settling for Thames. I don't expect a lot from Rowdy, but I'd give even odds that he puts up as good a season as Thames in 2020 in the same playing time.

I would do Ryu on a 2 year deal.

Would possibly go 2/60, pay him 40 million this year rather than give him the extra year.

No way. Ryu doesn't have the health history for a deal like that to make sense, nor does it make sense with regards to the current state of our team.

That doesn't make sense even if all those things were not an issue

I would go a 4-year for $100M.

Why, because it is not my money.

With the Cubs looking to clear payroll, what would you guys say to Tyler Chatwood and Kyle Schwarber for Teoscar Hernandez and maybe another piece?

We'd get a young piece to add to our core and maybe a useful bulk guy by picking up some salary.

Teoscar can't be worth anything and the Cubs wouldn't just give Schwarber away in a salary dump after he's had two straight ~3 win seasons and they have control of him for two more years. Their OF is already quite awful so I can't seem them moving their best piece there unless we were giving up some very good prospects.

You would pay Ryu 30M / year for two years, where based on his history, there's a strong likelihood he spends a fair chunk of it on the DL during at least one non-compete season? That's just silly. I could see it (although I think it's a massive overpay) if he was the final piece of the puzzle, but that's not the case.

On top of the fact that the Blue Jays aren't really competing the next 2 years and you're pretty much sinking 60m into a player who won't factor into the team when you are planning on winning (in 2-3 years).

3 years 54M... I'd do it, or 4/60ish

The 13 million in dead money is certainly worth something. I think they would consider the package if they are serious about shedding salary and we give a decent second piece.

They can shed from other guys. Likely an SP.

I've read that they are looking to add pitching. That's one of the reasons they need to clear payroll. Chatwood is an obvious candidate.

Sure, but the reason they're rumoured to shed money is they're all in on Cole, just an fyi, they need to move someone like Darvish or Hendricks.
