Hes got a 6 week audition as a starter and see if you can fix him. If not non tender. I liked him in the past... obviously great name but his stuff fell of a cliff and so did he. I don’t know if he’s injured or mechanics.

He doesn't throw a 4-seamer. You're comparing a small handful of pitches in 2016 to a small handful of pitches in 2019. His sinker is about where it was last year, and 2mph less than where he was in his breakout 2017.

 

This is a good claim. Three years of team control after this season, and he's been a league average starter as recently as 2017 and 2018. Dude has an absolute wipeout curveball when he's on, and that could make him a weapon out of the pen even if he doesn't find it again as a starter.

It's not a 5 mph drop, because he rarely throws 4-seam fastballs (maybe he should!) very few of his pitches have been classified as such, and it's entirely possible a bad cutter just happened to end up registering at 87 or something. His actual velo drop is ~92 in 2017 down to 90 in 2018 and 2019 with the sinker, and 90 in 2017 down to 89 in 2018 and slightly below that this year on his cutter. So we're looking at more of a ~2 mph drop, which is still significant but unchanged from last season where he had success.

He had a few pitches classified as 4-seam fastball in 2016 and 2019, with a difference in average velocity of 5 mph. They're not looking at the pitch frequencies.

Sinker/Curve guys never made sense to me. The two pitches don't tunnel. It's like Sanchez where you can just see the sinker right out of the hand because the two pitches move on different planes.

 

His curve is still effective just based on it being a semi-nasty pitch so maybe there's a pitch mix change the great Pete Walker could come up with. lol.

Astros probably had a claim in on him. Use him in relief, scrap the sinker, and see what kind of velo he gets throwing an elevated 4-seamer in 1-inning appearances. He doesn't need much to be effective with that curveball.

Speaking of the Astros. McCullers is registered as having a sinker and not a 4 seam fastball too. Based on pitch usage, Godley is essentially McCullers minus 5 MPH
