Outside of Montreal this is probably the first time Bo has played on turf. His actions look good though. Obviously the errors suck to see but he doesn't like a butcher at SS or anything.

So the Rays are legit contenders and all the attendance they could get was 12,000 people. That's a crime against humanity. Their franchise should be revoked and given to the Expos ASAP

Great point. The Expos were always known for their awesome attendance.

Expos attendance over entire Rick Monday 1981 season was 28,000+ https://exposnation.com/en/montreal-expos-attendance-per-year/

Rays attendance for 2019 when they're in WC race is about half that: http://www.espn.com/mlb/attendance

Clearly the Spos have bigger fanbase, especially when the population in Montreal was a lot less in 1981

You’d also think that having a new team (and potentially a new stadium) would give a bump to the attendance in Montreal if/when the Rays are relocated.

Man - their average attendance over the last 7 years was 10,322. I'm sure with a new stadium and team, they would draw well. The question is whether that's sustainable or not. May depend on Ownership. I'd love to see a team return to Montreal - but typically I don't support relocation based on attendance. Of note, the Cubs drew on average just 9,752 per game in 1981 - 3rd last in the majors (just above Minny and SD). I'm pretty happy the Cubs didn't get relocated.

When the expos were contenders, the place was packed, and it was a shithole, ran by a shithole owner.

Not to same situation here with a strong contender

I'm pretty sure the 2 ST games we had in Montreal this year were testers by either MLB or the Rays owners (or both) to see how much attendance and TV ratings they could get. They drew almost 100K over 2 games, so baseball is clearly still very popular in MTL:

Also there's a LOT more Carribean immigrants (Dominicans, Cubans....etc) in MTL now then there was in 1981

in 1994 - the Expos were the best team in baseball. They drew 24,500 on average in a stadium that holds like 56,000. That was 19th overall out of 28 MLB teams. The Rockies averaged 57,000 that year, the Jays? 49,200. Even the Marlins averaged almost 33,000 in 1994.

1979-1981 was the first time the Expos were every good and contending and yes, they drew well then compared to the rest of the league....but that didn't happen in 1992-1994 when they were good again. In those years, they were in the bottom half of the league in attendance.

Lots of reasons why the Rays don't draw well, but the MO of their front office plays a role IMO. Casual fans buy tickets, and those fans like having consistent stars to root for. A team that wins 87 games a year on a low payroll by churning through players to win the $/WAR championship is probably going to draw worse than a team that wins 87 games a year and keeps their stars around, all else being equal.

BTW - that 57,000 per game average by the Rockies in 1994 is the MLB record. That is insane over an 82 home game season. I was too young to really understand why, but with that in context, the strike in 1994 seems crazy. Based on attendance, baseball was booming and was as healthy as it's ever been. I guess that was the issue - the greedy Owner's weren't sharing enough of the pot. Dumb asses.
