I mean he literally did throw his shoulder into it, it wasn't really debatable.

I agree, but it would have been close to hitting him even if he didn't turn his shoulder.

My point is that when batters do that, the umps give 'em first base regardless.

The only difference is rule definition. I get what you're saying though, the player deliberately invited contact to create a positive outcome.

That's interesting, so it has it there, but not in the individual games on the savant site. The play by play files from the API only list it for the balls in play too.

Yeah, took me a while to figure it out, but looks like all the data is there. Video seems to take 2 days to get on there, if that matters to you.

Seems unnecessary to use Giles here, but guess they just want it over and done with.

He's only thrown once in the last week. Probably not the worst idea.

That was ridiculous. I'm also pretty sure Sandoval just hit a bouncing pitch which ruined the strikeout of the side.

He didn't, but I admit to going back a few seconds and looking again myself.

Inconsistent. His secondaries were excellent, he got a bunch of swinging strikes on them, but the fastball command was lacking and he missed high and away a lot. He threw a bunch of good pitches near the bottom of the zone but I don't think he got a single one called for a strike. Good stuff, below average command. Overall it was pretty encouraging.

I like that you used 'command'.

Numbers from yesterday are live, and that foul ball that Vladdy demolished was 119.7MPH.

One of the reasons I was a tad concerned about Vlad was the ground ball rate, which seemed a little high even in the minors, and ridiculous in the majors.

The Jayson Heyward narrative I'd heard was he had an uncorrectable flaw in his swing which caused his ground ball rate to sky rocket. I remember hearing the same thing about Brett Lawrie.

I've never looked at the fangraphs batted ball stats, but have started too lately. The bigger problem with Heyward and Lawrie actually seems to be that their hard hit rate is below 30, where good hitters are in the high 30s or low 40s. Vlad is in the low 40s.

His ground ball rate will probably normalize. But even if it's high he's not Lawrie or Heyward, his velocity off the bat and hard hit rate is way higher.

Who is a player with a highish ground ball rate, but very high exit velocity and hard hit rate?? Just curious if anyone can bring up an example.

At what point do telecasts start showing that value on every hit....I mean we show the pitch velocity on every pitch...why not the exit velocity on every hit? Christ - even dumb and dumber (Buck + Pat) talk exit velocity all the time these days.

I had a quick look. Among some notable hitters

Bryce Harper has both a ground ball rate and hard hit ball rate over 40%. So do Miguel Cabrera and Christian Yelich.

Trout has a GB rate under 40% with hard hit rate over 40. So do Mookie Betts and Cody Bellinger.

Unreal

How has his exit velo numbers compared to Eloy Jimenez?

Some said their power is comparable, but I have slight doubt another kid could hit it this hard, this often

Got home from my kids baseball game and had this one on PVR....man I enjoyed watching that all last night. Been watching every AB he has had.

I knew it was going to come but seeing how hard he hit those balls the effortless bat speed was a treat I won't forget.

Kind of reminded me of watching Delgado hit the windows.

Quick glance at the numbers, Eloy has 3 balls with EVs over 110, and nothing higher than 111 all year. All 3 were fair, and all 3 were hits (one a homer). Vladdy's had 9 balls with EVs over 110 and he's seen 94 fewer pitches.

That’s reassuring.

Maybe Vladdy sporting an 80 hit / 80 power tool is not a pipe dream.

And when he hits foul balls at 120 mph and that rocket 118.9 mph off Anderson’s glove we see glimpses of what could be in the not so distant future.
