Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2019 Author Posted May 7, 2019 Since Vlad can't get the ball in the air when he isn't striking out we don't have many great Vladimir memories yet.. though the chopper down the first base line, and the one he got in the air that was caught with a nice play at 335 feet were kind of cool... but nothing like this Snider > Vladdy
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 Snider > Vladdy For a few more days at least. When will Vladimir Guerrero JR have a higher career OPS then Travis Snider?? When will Vladimir Guerrero JR hava a higher career OPS then Michael Chavis?? More importantly Will Vlad hit ball in the air soon? Will he get his ground ball percentage below 70% ?? Will he get his grounder to fly ball ratio under 5.0 ?? Will he stop striking out every game?? Do the Umps hate him??

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 Preferred Snider to be honest. This comment will not age well.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 Jays hadn't really been burned by a high profile prospect failure until Snider. Jays were coming off back to back WS and sitting with the #4, #5, #10 & #28 prospects in baseball. Jose Silva at 10 and Alex Gonzalez at 4 (Delgado was the 5 and Green was #28) Snider never even hit top 5 actually. I think the only Jays ever to hit the top 5 (on the BA Pre-season list) are Gonzalez, Wells & Jr.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 This comment will not age well. Probably not but until we get some Valdimir bombs, or at least interestingly hard hit fly balls or something we will live in the past with Snider highlights. Vladimir Guerrero JR has as of May 7th 2019 a) reportedly hit his choppers with high exit velocity hit a tremendous chopper down the right field line for a double c) hit a 335 foot fly ball down the left field line which hung up long enough that it was caught (nice catch). Travis Snider has hit many balls hard, many booming drives, many high flies (though not as many as we wanted) Here is his first MLB hit a 397 foot booming drive to left center in Yankee Stadium. If you listen closely you can hear Murph say "We told that f***er to pull it, little s*** didn't listen"

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 Sigh this read is depressing Good news bad news: Bad news first: Vlad's numbers are not distinguishable from Alen Hansons. They are the same. Very much the same. Good news: Vlad's exit velocities are much higher than Hanson's. Hanson is only competive with Vlad because he gets the ball in the air more. I guess it's hard to tell from the game feed, but when he doesn't strike out he's hitting fearsome choppers at the infielders... fearsome choppers.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 How high did Junior Felix get. I remember being excited by him when he came up I don't remember how high he got... I remember he hit a homerun his first game (first pitch I think) and started off hot. I also remember an inside the park grand slam... Looking at bbref, his minor league numbers seem mediocre. So maybe the hype was mostly because of his hot start. He did well in 1990 too. Then was traded for Devo. I remember there being questions about his age.

Gillick knew what he was and the highlight for me was trading him for Devo.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2019 Author Posted May 7, 2019 Someone should start the 'When will Vladdy get sent back down' thread. Pick the date and time that it's announced.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 This start is sure going to help the Blue Jays when Vladdy sues them for service time manipulation. Maybe Shatkins was right that he needed more seasoning in the minors.

Tie breaker is when he returns. Sent down May 12th 4:35 p.m. Return Date September 1st. Tie Breaker 2 Predict the Rookie of the Year that gets the stats we wish Vlad had... Plat Verified Member Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 That's why you shouldn't hype up a prospect like he got hyped up, I don't care how much of a phenom he is, it works in basketball maybe hockey/football, not in baseball. I mean he got a standing ovation at a Raptor playoff game after his first professional game, c'mon now...like stop putting so much pressure on the kid.

He can look at it as 'everyone's hopes and dreams are resting on my ability to perform and elevate the performance of this team' or 'Wow. These are some super supportive fans that are welcoming me to the city and team and will be behind me.'

You don't think there was pressure on him to perform in the minors where he destroyed every baseball he even looked at?
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 You don't think there was pressure on him to perform in the minors where he destroyed every baseball he even looked at? As much as I don't think Vlad's early issues are a result of being over hyped, you can't compare the pressure of playing in the minors to the majors. Everything is under more scrutiny, there are multiple cameras and replays of everything you do etc etc.

He's been dealing with hype, pressure, and scrutiny his whole life.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 I wonder how more time they will give Latin Travis Snider before sending him back down.

Travis Snider wasn't all that but got a few in the air like this one. Do you think Vlad will do anything different tonight other than a strike out or 2 and a chopper or two?? Will one of the choppers get through tonight?? With his ground ball rate do you think they'll start playing 5 infielders on him??
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 Vladdy will face his 1st real pitcher tonight. Berrios is tough

Kind of different when you actually get to the big stage where you have been looking to get to all of your life, then to add in the enormous amount of hype and media spotlight and party/gatherings for you then its a recipe for a slow start...none of it was his fault though, the media just wanted to cash in on his arrival. I am fully confident that when the hype wears off and he gets fully accustomed to the big leagues, he will mash like he mashed the minor leagues.

When he made the jump from A+ to AA he was slow to get going. Once he got acclimated a couple weeks in he blew up and started destroying the ball

He's got the 4th lowest swinging strike rate on the team at like 9% and his exit velocity is still very good. The 1 big outlier is his ground ball rate which is just .... stupid high and obviously wont continue, nor will a .217 babip. When this all corrects itself it will be a wonderful show to watch.
