gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 The whole point of this season is to watch baseball like this, this is what rebuilding baseball is. 10,000 fans, poor hitting, blunders all over the place This is what we signed up for so stop complaining. Exactly...this team is not going to be good this year guys, it's step one of the rebuild. Thanks guys..
tbad Verified Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 I f***ing miss Donaldson... I hope Vlad Jr fills that void.
tercet Verified Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Had soccer tonight and missed most of the game, I see everything went pretty much as expected. I have more hope long term for 10SB then Gurribabip, but very little hope for both.
tercet Verified Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Gurribabip can hit mistake pitches, but his approach which essentially is to swing swing swing swing swing, will get eaten alive by good pitchers, he will occasionally run into a mistake pitch from s***** pitchers, but he will get eaten up alive in the majors. His OPS is ~550 outside of his 11game hit streak, lol

saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Gurriel walks less than Pillar. I didn't think that was even possible. If he doesn't change his approach soon he's going to be in trouble, because he doesn't have Pillar's defense and he strikes out more than Pillar. He's too young to write off, but we need to see some changes.

His OPS is ~550 outside of his 11game hit streak, lol Of interest, his career swing % is about 53%. I thought that seemed high, but wasn't sure so I went to Fangraphs to look. I assumed all the hitters with the highest swing % would be these free swingers who walk <5% of the time and K at a 25%+ rate (like Javier Baez). Baez was #2 last year at 58%, but I was surprised at the type of hitter that showed up... Dickerson was #1 at 59% Freddie Freeman was #6 at 55.6% Castellanos was #7 Piscotty #15 at 53% Scooter Gennett #17 Moustakas #20 at 52% Didi at #23 JD Martinez #28 T.Storey #30 at 50% Lots of great hitters in the list (mixed in with the likes of Kevin Pillar and other useless hitters).

Terrible k/bb and only a high babip has kept him looking OK at the major league level. The positive information is his performance in Cuba was much better, he had a good k/bb there. Also I assume the scouts liked him at least a bit or they wouldn't of signed him to the contract they did. The hope I have is that the Cuban stats show something real and he'll improve. What do you think about the Cuban leagues?? Is it like the low minors where guys can have good walk rates, but they fall apart in the high minors?

The history of guys that walk 3-5% and strikeout 22-26% is not good......
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 The history of guys that walk 3-5% and strikeout 22-26% is not good...... Oh I'm not going to argue with you there. You just commented on how he swings at everything...I agree and acknowledge that too - but wasn't sure what that mean for his long term projections. Turns out that lots of different types of hitters (some good, some bad, some with high OBP's, some with low OBP's) have high swing %'s.

He has good batted ball data (he can hit some pitches hard..) which is why scouts/some people still like him, but just when his approach is this bad he is overwhelmingly destined to fail versus better pitching that exploit his weakness. Could he double his walk rate / cut his K rate down to like 20%? Maybe, but probably not. Cuba is like A+/AA I think, I wouldn't look too much into those to be honest.

True, I've never really looked into his swing % stats so I don't know those comparisons you mentioned. His bb/k and watching him hit last year is more then enough in this case. I just don't think hitters ever can double their BB rate, or cut K rate 25% which is what he needs to have a chance of being an adequate hitter.
Plat Verified Member Posted April 2, 2019 Posted April 2, 2019 Looks like the Jays will be the only crappy Toronto sports team. The Raptors looking to go deep in the playoffs, Leafs made the playoffs and have the talent to make some noise if they can somehow beat the Bruins, TFC looks good to start the season with a pretty good roster, I don't know anything about the Argos/CFL lol.

Literally half of the entire league makes the hockey playoffs, and the Leaves barely made it.
