Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 The Blue Jays are now up to $45M (20 Tulo, 15 Martin, 10 Morales) in dead money this season... on a $116M payroll. But don't take that as a complaint with this trade. Better than $47m in dead money I guess. Morales was a write-off already.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 Nice to see Shapiro writing off a mistake for the better of the team, as Tulo and Martin were obviously easier to swallow.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 Kendrys out; a warm body INF, international FA bonus boodle, and Anthony Alford in. This is quite the compelling turn of events. Wow I can’t believe we managed to trade Morales, get something back and save a couple of million! The roster flexibility is so vital to create extra playing time for our prospects. This takes over from the Hernandez / Liriano deal as Shatkin’s best trade IMO.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 We got Grichuk for nothing. Not quite. We gave up a reliever who had just had a decent season and a prospect projected to be a reliever. Liriano was only a rental and we even got a few months of Aoki thrown in. You’re welcome to prefer the Grichuk trade (it’s turned out great so far) but I’ll stick with the Hernandez deal as the (now 2nd) best.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 That usually is rumoured agreements, or is it speculation? Link's behind a paywall, can you post it? 90% of the time when a team is linked to a player it's basically a done deal. The only time s*** seems to fall apart is if when PED's or injuries enter the picture.
EastCoaster Verified Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 Morales qualities wasn't just on the field but in the clubhouse especially with the young Hispanic kids with a language barrier now with Montoya at helm of the club this isn't just an issue anymore. Unlike most I don't believe this move doesn't make a clearer the path for Tellez on the contrary it will insure that McKinney and Hernadez will stay in the line up especially that Montoya has chosen McKinney as the leadoff hitter. This can also server as a good precursor for when Vladdy jr come up especially if he has some defensive struggles at 3rd base early on then Dury can step in an help easy the pressure by relieving the some of burden while Guerrero can be slotted in the DH spot.

Alford will be rotating in with Mckinney & Pillar regularly. The beauty of this move is opening up the DH spot and providing tons of flexibility for the whole roster giving our young guys more consistent ABs. Where did you get the idea Montoyo has chosen McKinney for the lead off spot? Every indication this spring has Drury slotted there early on. I do agree with this helping Vlad's bat stay in the lineup as he continues to develop at 3B

There was talk of McKinney at lead off. Neither Drury or McKinney are real great options. Alford had the highest .OBP out of all three in the minors, and clearly has the edge in speed so he would be a good fit at the top, but he's going to have to establish himself and get regular playing time before that happens.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 How much money are the Jays paying in total to dump Tulo, Martin and Morales Tough but necessary pill to swallow to transform the team.
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 How much money are the Jays paying in total to dump Tulo, Martin and Morales Tough but necessary pill to swallow to transform the team. It's not really hurting the team, they weren't going to be in on any of the big players this off season regardless. Get 'em out, run with the guys who may have a future and see what you've got. I don't see much of a downside.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 Wonder what we would be looking at as our regular lineup. We looking at Smoak and Grichuk as our 3-4 hitters?

JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 How much money are the Jays paying in total to dump Tulo, Martin and Morales Tough but necessary pill to swallow to transform the team. It's actually more than the $38M for Tulo, because of this I came across. I'm not sure if anyone posted it before, but it might have been part of the Jays meeting with his agent(s) prior to his release, possibly to avoid a grievance being filed. It seems $5M of his 2019 salary is being deferred at 3% interest, payable in 10 equal installments each Jan. 1, 2025-34, which suggests it was to avoid a grievance (at least I believe so), and to guarantee him some future income if even he and his people thought he was finished, and if option is declined, buyout is to be paid in $2M installments each July 1, 2021-22, which it was. https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/al-east/new-york-yankees/ Jays are paying $16.4M of Martin's $20M salary this year. https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/nl-west/los-angeles-dodgers/ Jays are paying somewhere in the neighbourhood of $10M of the $12M still owed to Morales, though some reports have varied from what I've read e.g. a little more, at least. https://legacy.baseballprospectus.com/compensation/cots/al-west/oakland-athletics/ Total of all of that, estimating some that don't have exact figures yet: ~$10M (Morales) + $16.4M (Martin) + at least $38M (Tulo, though if I did the interest correctly on the deferred money, it comes out to $900K, totaling $5.9M over 10 installments would be $590K) would equal at least $64.4M. If I did the interest correctly an additional $900K bringing it to $65.3M. I could have done the interest wrong, but based on what I've found out, at least $64.4M.
JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 I think they have Grichuk leading off which makes sense If he can maintain an okay OBP it should be fine. If his power stays the same, or increases a bit, it could lead to an early run, which is also good. I could see them moving him down in the lineup if his power stroke sticks or increases and someone else keeps a consistently high OBP. Whatever works I'm happy with
KevinGregg Verified Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 woah Alford taking the 25th spot Looks like no Alford
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 Looks like no Alford That would be unfortunate considering how Alford's Twitter sounded like he thought he was here.
KevinGregg Verified Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 Alford is in town, and isn’t exactly correcting people who are congratulating him on making the team
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 Pretty messed up to call him up and then change course like that, unless there is another move on the way. I'm pretty sure Pillar will be a Jay until he retires so I am no longer expecting him to be traded. Shatkins trying to troll us by keeping him for this long.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 This is shaping up to be a bizarre situation.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 This is shaping up to be a bizarre situation. I noticed that Buffalo doesn't start playing until a week from today. Is it possible for Alford and perhaps others to be with the big club to experience Opening Day, before being sent to join the Bisons over/after the weekend?

That just doesn't usually happen. Its usually the 25-guys that made the teams moment unless its an established MLB guy thats just injured in the dugout. If he was under the impression he made the team this is really awkward.

I can only take about 5 seconds of Blair, so I didn't hear what he said next.
