I'm sure you are right. 90% of the guys playing now though would only do it 1 in 50 times.

I wonder if the fact that pitchers throw significantly harder and bunting is stupid has anything to do with that...

The catcher ended up going into the stands after fans in the brawl that ensued. Five days later, same two teams playing it was 10 cent beer night and the fans all attack the umpires and players.

So that's what stemmed the brawl, lol. 10 Cent Beer Night is legendary.

I agree with the fact that it's stupid, but most players can't bunt anymore because it is not practiced with regularity. I'm pretty sure guys that know how to bunt could do so in today's game as well. An uptick in 5mph aint going to change that.

Teammates mourn slayings of pitcher's family in Va. town

Aug 29, 2019

KEELING, Va. (AP) Blake Bivens was inconsolable as the 24-year-old minor league pitcher flew from a road trip back to southern Virginia, where his wife, 1-year-old son and mother-in-law were slain.

"It was awful," said Montgomery Biscuits manager Morgan Ensberg, who traveled with Bivens on Tuesday. "Blake is an incredibly strong man. He's an incredibly strong man, and he went through just a rotation of tearing up, and then he would shake and then he would just stare.

"I didn't let him out of my sight."

The 18-year-old brother of Bivens' wife has been charged with first-degree murder in the slayings, which have shocked his coaches, teammates and the community where his family lived.

"You don't wish this on any community, any family," Pittsylvania County Sheriff Mike Taylor said. "We're a small community. It affects us all."

Court documents released Thursday revealed new details in the slayings but did not explain what could have driven 18-year-old Matthew Bernard to allegedly kill his sister, Emily Bernard Bivens; his nephew, 14-month-old Cullen Bivens; and his mother, Joan Bernard.

In Montgomery, the Biscuits - a Double-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays - painted "BIV" on the ground behind home plate before a game against Pensacola. They were to hold a moment of silence before the game, with another planned before the Rays' home game Friday against the Cleveland Indians.

"Nobody's thinking about baseball," Ensberg said.

Montgomery pitching coach R.C. Lichtenstein remembers pregame moments when Bivens would walk over to see his wife and hold Cullen.

Biscuits pitcher Ryan Thompson said Bivens' family was on his mind "all the time."

"His family was everything to him," said an emotional Thompson, who described Bivens as a close friend with a "hilarious" sense of humor.

"He never lets the game get in the way of who he is as a human being. He's such a great guy, and something like this couldn't happen to a better human being," Thompson said.

According to the complaint filed against Bernard, the teenager's rampage began Tuesday morning at a neighbor's house. Bernard punched the neighbor in the arm and then ran away, police said.

The neighbor then heard gunshots at the house next door, police said. The neighbor drove to the house and found a woman's body in the driveway. Inside, she found the other two bodies.

Officers found two victims with gunshot wounds to the head and rifle shell casings near all three bodies.

A rifle was found in a wooded area behind the house and a sledgehammer with blood was found in the garage, the court documents said.

The criminal complaint did not offer any motive for the killings, and authorities have declined to comment.

After the bodies were discovered, a manhunt brought as many as 100 officers to Keeling, a tiny community near the North Carolina border.

Bernard emerged naked from the woods about four hours later, running past TV cameras to a church parking lot, where he was recorded trying to choke a church caretaker.

An officer used pepper spray and struck Bernard with a baton before he was captured, officials said.

Bernard banged his head against the cage in a police vehicle after being taken into custody and was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said. He was released and was in jail Thursday, where he was being held without bail and kept on suicide watch, police said.

A "celebration of life" service for the slain family members is planned for Saturday.

A vigil was held at The River Church in Danville, Virginia, Wednesday night. Senior pastor Jackie Poe led those in attendance in prayer for the Bivens and Bernard families.

Avery Stevens, pastor of Keeling Baptist Church, said he was in his office where he also works as an insurance agent when he saw the television coverage of Bernard's capture near his church.

"This is a small, rural community, pretty quiet most of the time like most small, rural communities. But the fact of the matter is, it can happen anywhere, and right there at the doorstep," he said.

"Pray for the family," he said. "Praying for the community. Praying for healing."

The Rockies are probably the worst team that is actually trying to win. I guess other than the Royals, who think they can win the WS every year by stealing bases.

Rockies were a huge disappointment this year. Outside of Marquez and Gray (who are both on the IL now), the rest of their starting rotation pitched awful. Freeland took a huge step back in comparison to what he did last season. Their bullpen outside of Oberg and a few other guys were terrible. Wade Davis was brutal.

Lineup wise, Arenado, Story, Blackmon, Dahl were solid. McMahon was meh but at least he has provided positive value. The rest of their lineup was awful. Murphy was a huge disappointment at first base. Hampson sucked. Tapia and Desmond were negative WAR players. Awful bench as well.

Letting DJ LeMahieu walk last offseason and sign Daniel Murphy instead proved to be a big mistake. 2 years at $24 million was a steal. LeMahieu has posted a 4.8 WAR thus far with the Yankees, proving to be one of the FA signings and bargains from the offseason.

They need to take advantage of these years that they have Arenado and Story both in their prime. Otherwise, what a waste.

They are kind of like the Angels. Just pathetic.

I don't know how I'd go on after that. That poor dude.

Same. Absolutely awful.

Max Scherzer is poised to win his fourth Cy Young Award this year. That would give him more than Koufax, Pedro and Kershaw. A little more than 8 years ago, the #Tigers sent him to minors with 7.29 ERA

Tyler Skaggs’ autopsy: Fentanyl, oxycodone and alcohol led to death by choking on vomit

yikes..

Holy s***!

“We are grateful for the work of the detectives in the Southlake Police Department and their ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding Tyler’s death. We were shocked to learn that it may involve an employee of the Los Angeles Angels. We will not rest until we learn the truth about how Tyler came into possession of these narcotics, including who supplied them. To that end, we have hired attorney Rusty Hardin to assist us.”

During some game on TV earlier this month, they showed the Cincinnati Redlegs logo from 1957, the announcer said he didn't realize they didn't call themselves the Reds until that late in franchise history.

Nobody was in his existence to tell him the Reds changed to the Redlegs for a handful of years during the McCarthy Era....

I think most of us assumed it was something like this. It usually is.

The death, yeah, but there's an ongoing investigation against an employee, don't see that often.

It sounds as if the opioids may have been supplied by a team employee, but the responsibility is 100% on the person who took them. It's so sad to see that players still don't know any better. Hopefully this tragedy will wake some people up.

No, not 100%. These are addictive drugs. A doctor can certainly be liable for death of a client from drugs. We don't know who this employee is.

There's a difference between legal liability and personal responsibility.

I don't know the exact situation but everyone, especially athletes, knows the dangers of these drugs. We all have a personal responsibility to take care of ourselves. It really sucks that Skaggs had a costly lapse in judgment.
