That means it'll be a good game? Enjoy!

Agreed...but I'm not sure the noobs in the crowd would have been ready for intricately poised pitching duels.

Still, it was a great experience. The acid test will be whether the Cubs and the Cards, as two teams with lower profiles than the Yanks and Bosox, get a similar level of interest next season.

BR says he's signed from 2020-2022 at 22.5M / year, with a 1M buyout for 2023. I wasn't including what was left for this year, so it would actually be more than 68M unless they have the contract reported wrong.

If we're talking about Wil Myers, Fangraphs has him at Contract: 6 yr $83MM (2017-22) 2023 club option AAV: $14MM I didn't look into it being backloaded so I just did $14M x 3 + a bit of extra depending on his time remaining on his contract this year. If it was backloaded, then I'm wrong on that. But I stand by taking on that contract to get better prospects regardless.

It was very heavily backloaded.

Ahh, okay, my bad... Still willing to take it on for 3 years, but we'd need even better prospects in that case! So that's even better!!!

Tyler Skaggs has apparently passed away. Only 27 years old.

I just saw that. Not a message I expected or wanted to see on my phone.

Today's Angels game has been postponed btw (obviously).

Wow just saw what’s left of Myers’ contract. I can’t see Shatkins taking on $60m and trading their best trade chip unless it’s an amazing haul of prospects.

Yeah we didn’t pay off Martin and Tulo only to handcuff us to this size of a contract:

You absolutely take on that contract if it means prospect(s) coming back with a projected high surplus value

No Absolute Jim , not even based on what has been posted by the other BJMB members

Unless you ignore them and only believe yourself to be Right ! That or only proof both you and Atkins should never Manage the Jays

Smash !!! Lol

There is zero chance Shatkins would even consider it.

Not Zero , considering the Grichuck deal and some of the crap he has hauled and horded in back on Trades to date !!!

LetÂ’s be honest Sanchez is who Atkins is more likely at this point to Trade for , then Trade in a Deal going the other way !

July 1st is the day that thousands of people make fun of the Mets over the Barry Bonilla deferred payments. But it's always more fun to make fun of the king of the deferred payments the Baltimore Orioles.

The O's will pay:

Chris Davis $3.5M a year from 2023 to 2032 and then $1.4M from 2033 to 2037.

Alex Cobb $2m in 2022 and $1.8m from 2023 to 2032. He'll have $5.5m of his salary deferred to 2033 to 2037 when he doesn't get 130 innings in 2020

Mark Trumbo gets $1.5m in 2020, 21, 22

Cashner $1.5m in 2020 & 21

Ubaldo gets $2.25m a year from last year to 2022

The Nats have a bunch of deferred payments too. The Reds are also still paying Ken Griffey Jr

Posted this in the Jays thread but Tulo has 5 mil deferred at percent interest that gets paid over the course of 5 years some time in the future.

Didn't the Jays buy that out, or they couldn't?

If he retires before the end of his contract, does he still get that?

Yeah, I'm wondering the same thing, or if it was paid when they bought him out? I have no clue about deferred contracts.

If the Mets are still paying Bonilla, then that suggests not.

Well the thing is we have almost nothing to spend our payroll on. So I don't know if there's a significant opportunity cost of taking that contract vs. going into free agency with that money. Even if you take Myers, you will have money to spend in FA.

Then it comes down to who the Padres would include in order for us to take Myers. You would be basically paying 68M for 7 years of whoever SD sends back. If they are including a couple good prospects then it's like 14 years.

But this is mostly predicated on the Padres being dumb, which they are. It's not even unthinkable that Myers goes back to a 2-4 WAR player as a 1B.

Well the problem is that we're assuming the Padres think Myers is bad or has a bad contract.

Just an alert here that this is completely incorrect for any interested parties. The Bonilla situation is entirely different and had nothing to do with retirement.

Bonilla had one year and like 10 mil remaining on his contract and the Mets thought it would be a better idea to convert the last year of his contract into a series of deferred payments at 8% interest rather than one lump sum. Bonilla had to agree and if he had retired, he would have sacrificed his final year's pay and the deferred payments would never have been a thing.

Was Tulo's deferred payments bought out? Also, if he indeeds call it a career, does Toronto have to still pay this money if it wasn't part of the buyout? It's not that big a deal, I'm just intrigued and don't know jack s*** about deferred payment contracts.

It depends on the wording of the contract. I assume they'd have a clause in there stating that the player must play until a certain year or that part of each year is deferred but there's no hard and fast rule here. Bonilla's deferred payments were basically in exchange for mutually giving up the last year of his contract, not written in.

Eloy Jimenez is unowned in BORED. If someone didn’t add him by now they must mean he’s a FA- Spanky logic. I’ll be adding him I guess

You should, C-poop... we all know you don't even know how to check, invalid. If he was a separate entity, he's available. Can't get the tight skin around your brain yet, I see, lol.
