the Oakland Athletics announced they have signed slugger Khris Davis to a two-year contract extension covering the 2020 and 2021 seasons. The two-year deal is worth $33.5 million, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle

Wouldn't Davis have been able to do wayyy better than that this off season? Draft pick compensation isn't nearly what it used to be.

I suppose he's 31. At that point teams don't seem willing to give 5 year deals anymore.

He probably saw the struggles other DH types are having on the open market and decided it wasn't worth the risk. He absolutely should be getting more.

One team in the AL East with a record above 500 so far

and they get their 2nd best player from last year back today.

Despite everything we know about the advanced stats, the fan is still blinded by the HR. Over Khris Davis' 3 year breakout with the A's he's the 75th best offensive player by fWAR. The following have the same fWAR or slightly better:

Marcus Semien

Mike Zunino

Elvis Andrus

Jed Lowrie

Assdribble

Carlos Santana

Chris Taylor

Adam Eaton

Khris Davis got a good deal. The market hates two things: players in their 30's and DH's. He's both. Smart of him to take the deal now. An extra year would have been better, but AAV wise he did well.

Ten years ago he would have fared better but the market has changed too much.

I thought with DH's that it wasn't necessarily best to use WAR to evaluate them. Or is that wrong?

Yeah, I do, they take a massive hit in defensive metrics, best to measure them in wRC+

So I can safely ignore Hurl's preachy ********? It's also the witching hour for Spanky so if someone else could confirm that would be great.

Seriously? Preachy ********?

I don't understand how what Hurl said could be considered preachy.

A DH does take a massive hit in WAR due to not providing any value defensively... but Davis is a negative defending in the OF. Its not like he would accrue any value if he was allowed to play out there.

He's only joking around, bro, lol. Also if he were playing in the OF he would accrue more fWAR, he isn't that awful... :P

For real. Davis' wRC+ in Oakland is 129, that's pretty decent, but it's nothing special. Especially so for someone who's a liability in the field like you correctly pointed out.

Okay now compare all DH's to Davis? Plus his defensive value wouldn't be near as bad if he was in the OF. Comparing Davis to those guys below is comparing apples to oranges, they play up the middle, save for Carlos Santana. That contract was fair concerning age and value to the contract?

Yes it would be, Khris Davis is one of the worst defensive outfielders in the MLB, and he has zero arm. Khris Davis hits a ton of homers and that's great, but he's not nearly close to being on the same tier as JD Martinez, Nelson Cruz or EE in his Blue Jays prime. He's a good player to have but his value is severely limited by being a full time DH and awful outfielder, and he's not giving you any extra runs on the bases.

Khris Davis is really bad in the outfield bro.
