Teams basically never front load deals. That's just something we need to stop pushing.

Yeah its rare, but with the changing free agent environment it might be something we see more of in the future. This sort of structure would make sense for a team with payroll flexibility during a non-competitive year.

Wouldn't that kinda make the more sense from a certain perspective? Pay while in the player is in his prime. Once age starts to set in it might be an easier contract to move if the actual dollars left are less of an albatross.

Yeah but teams are probably guarding against future inflation. I also mostly agree with you but I don't sign the cheques.

From the teams' perspective yes, but most players would rather have it the other way.

Would make sense if the player has an opt out. Get most of the value of contract in the front end, opt out as the AAV declines if the player is still doing well, and then sign another deal with higher AAV hopefully. Boras did that for both JD Martinez and Jake Arrieta last season.

Everyone is ignoring the fact that every potential deal will likely include multiple opt-outs for the player. I could see a deal that promises him 2/70 or 3/100 before an opt out hits and it gets cheaper after that.

Also depends on the age of the player and duration of the contract. For Machado and Harper I'd say a 10 year deal with opt outs after year 3 and year 6 with the contract being front loaded could benefit the player and team.

Now for a player closer to 30 years old, they would probably take/want more guaranteed money in the later years knowing a decline is inevitable

Huh? Players should want to get paid up front. Compound interest + the value of a dollar will decrease over time.

IF the Jays were interested, I'd certainly think they'd look at front ending the deal. Give him big bucks while all their young stars are making peanuts, then taper it back when they'll need payroll space to pay their young guys. That would create flexibility later in the deal (reduced risk for the Jay) and it should also be a selling feature for Machado. The issue these days is the opt out's....but again, you think front ending the deal, while including an opt out would really benefit Machado.

That said - we aren't signing him - even though it does appear to be a good fit in terms of position and our timeline.

FWIW that’ll be from his agent, so the offer could still be real, it’s just not going to get it done.

interesting quote from Grandal:

“I felt like part of my responsibility as a player was to respect the guys that went through this process before I did, those guys who established pay levels and markets for upper-tier catchers like me”

basically, players are under pressure to prioritize AAV (for the sake of precedent) rather than duration, even if it means turning down $60M guaranteed for $18.5M

That's odd. I would want to get my hands on as much money as I could up front. Then I could control my investments and start doing something with it.

Surprised nobody could beat 3/27 for Ottavino. That's Bryan Shaw money.

How much more were teams going to go on him? Nothing more than 3/30 I would imagine. He's 33-years-old already as well. Great signing by the Yankees. Plus for him, going on a World Series contending club also was a selling point, even if he got less AAV.

So they have Chapman, Betances, Britton, and Ottavino……………Doesnt look like they are adding another SP, just rolling with a deep bullpen and the improvements they already made

A mystery team has the highest bid for Machado. I'd laugh if it was us and he passes it over cause he hates us

I really don't want to have to cheer for Manny for the next 10 years. I'd be quite happy with that outcome, especially since it would show our willingness to spend big.

IMO the Machado mystery team is someone like the Padres looking to kick start their progression after years of rebuilding.
