Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 Guys on the fan apparently don't think the team has any chance of competing before 2030. I mean, it's possible that we don't, but "no chance" is just weapons grade dumb. Most teams would KILL for a core like ours.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 We get Davis over Alford again lol
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 We get Davis over Alford again lol Did Alford f*** somebody’s wife? If we needed playing time for anyone on the extended roster its Alford. Hes out of options. Looks more and more likely they will just cut bait with him. He still looks way more intriguing than McKinney, Fisher, or Davis and yet they all play more. For reasons that go beyond comprehension.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 We get Davis over Alford again lol Possible Alford is banged up from the collision with the wall the other day.

I think your overstating a bit some teams yes Al east the Oriorls but that's it Maybe royals tigers in central Mariners But that's it. 4 teams that would trade us rosters I think.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 Possible Alford is banged up from the collision with the wall the other day. Only logical explanation I have seen so far.

Core != roster. I mean, that should be plainly obvious to literally anyone.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 (edited) Looks like Alford has fallen out of management's interest regarding next year's roster. Davis and Fisher get the starts tonight again. Well, at least they're giving Davis a look, who imo would provide more value than McKinney or Fisher. Davis could possibly be a viable fourth outfielder behind Gurriel, Grichuk and a free agent signing next year. Montoyo specifically mentioned Davis by name a week or so ago when talking about Sept call ups. Seems like he's a manager favorite. As far as why Alford isn't getting time, who knows. It's not like Shatkins to let an asset go for nothing, regardless of how marginal it might be (see Pompey), so I would expect Alford to either make the 2020 roster or be traded for something, whether he plays this Sept or not. Slade Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2019 Posted September 12, 2019 Actually worst than Pillar, $52MM over the next 5 years smh.
keggy Verified Member Posted September 12, 2019 Posted September 12, 2019 Actually worst than Pillar, $52MM over the next 5 years smh. People have been waiting for Pillar to turn into Socrates Brito for the past 4 seasons, but he actually followed a pretty predictable aging curve, during which time we soaked up tens of millions of dollars worth of surplus value. He'll probably be demoted to a good 4th outfielder next year or the year after and out of baseball a couple years after that.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2019 Author Posted September 12, 2019 Actually worst than Pillar, $52MM over the next 5 years smh. The difference is that while Pillar will only get worse, Grichuk has a good chance to bounce back to being a 2 WAR outfielder for the rest of his contract. Still think the contract was unnecessary though. 2 WAR outfielders aren’t so valuable that you have to secure them long term.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2019 Author Posted September 12, 2019 Our outfield sucks. As much as we need pitching, IMO with the current roster construction we won’t seriously compete until we have at least one very good outfielder. I can’t really see any of the current crop developing into stars.

I can’t really see any of the current crop developing into stars. I can see an OF within 2 years of Gurriel, Biggio, and Grichuk, once another MIF prospect graduates. Which is not bad at all. Grichuk is having a down year, his history says he should be 2-2.5 WAR minimum.
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2019 Author Posted September 12, 2019 Gurriel ? Probably will be our best outfielder, but a star? No.

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2019 Posted September 12, 2019 Our OF sucks but I'm not sure Atkins will do much about it this offseason. Gurriel, Teoscar, Fisher and Grichuk might be the 4 we see come April. We could really use a CF though. I wonder if we sign or trade for one and just leave the DH spot open which would allow us to carry 5 OFs. Teoscar has 1 more option year too.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2019 Posted September 12, 2019 Lol. You are dumb. When bichette, vlad, and groshans hopefully in the infield and giving the expected elite production, you just need an average OF There is a need for better OF but this could happen on it's own from assets already in place. Expect the focus will be on other needs.

We can't do anything about Grichuk anyways and the way his contract is structured it's not something that should kill our chances anyways. We have money to spend.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 12, 2019 Posted September 12, 2019 I find all of the screeching over Alford's lack of playing time very amusing. Very, very amusing.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2019 Posted September 12, 2019 Probably has more to do with the fact that he really f***ing sucks. Even if you're highly convicted in your evaluation, this part of the season does not matter and you're actually going to benefit with losses. Generally speaking if a guy is giving a game or two and he sucks as you suspected you sit him. Alford was given 1 start and was 1 for 3 on a night where the team only had 2 hits so he was facing good pitching. He also made an excellent defensive play that showed his elite speed and defensive upside. Generally speaking when you give a guy a game and he plays well you give him another until he shits the bed. The Jays sat him the next 4 or is now 5 games.

If Anthony Alford going 1 for 3 should have earned him a consecutive start, what does blowing chunks for two seasons in AAA + blowing even bigger chunks in his small major league career earn him? A ticket to the KBO?

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted September 12, 2019 Posted September 12, 2019 If Randal Grichuk didn't sign that extension would he even be worthy of tendering a contract this offseason? Man he has been trash.
