jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 I'm all for tanking, personally. But to a certain extent. I'd much rather see the young guys succeed which results in us winning games, rather than them struggle and us lose. I've said this before, but ideally for me we lose a ton of high scoring games, like last night.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 f*** Montoyo for putting Vlad on the bench. Finally had an afternoon game off. God damnit. It's not shocking to think people perform better with regular rest. Even Athletes.
Todd Van Anus Verified Member Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 This team is going to be really good in a few years. My only concern is pitching. What is Pearson's upside..is he a potential ace? The Jays seem to have a lot of potential SP3/4's but no real ace in the system, unless that's Pearson. They may need to penetrate free agency for that ace. Otherwise, the future is looking good for Jays fans with Vladdy, Bichette, Biggio, Gurriel, and Grichuk.

You can trade for pitching too just gave good prospect capital when needed.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 He's probably better than Fisher. Jays traded Sanchez, Biagini and Stephenson for another Socrates Brito. Yeah but they signed Godley. He was as good as 2016 Sanchez....in 2017 (more recently), so now it's like we traded Biagini and Stevenson for Fisher while upgrading Sanchez to Godley. It's all about perspective man.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 He's probably better than Fisher. Jays traded Sanchez, Biagini and Stephenson for another Socrates Brito. So if Fisher is Socrates Brito, then we traded crap for crap and cleared up a 40-man and 25-man spot in the process. Sounds like a no-lose scenario.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 Paulino DFA for Godley. Hope Paulino clears waivers. Still like the arm as a RP. My hope of him ever being a SP is done obviously. Can't stay healthy in that role.

Ray Verified Member Posted August 7, 2019 Posted August 7, 2019 What stood out to me the most from Atkins interview yesterday: "We could envision a scenario where all we do this winter is go out and add pitching". I hope this is what they end up doing. There are some good budget friendly mid-rotation guys we could end up going for (Odorizzi? Miley? Roark?) that could really help this staff. They're likely not going to splurge on a Gerrit Cole even though they could clearly afford it, but I would hope they add at least two proven mid-rotation guys. We're likely going to have a payroll of $50M heading into next season, and that's if you give everyone generous arb raises and pick up Galvis' option. Even if our payroll is limited to what it was this season, we'll still have a ton of money to spend.

Wheeler too, I think they should go after Cole and guys of his ilk, just doubt they'd sign here. 2 of them guys would be fine.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 Signing Godley doesn't change the fact that Atkins over payed for Fisher. Jesus.. Or you could look at it and say if Godley is being DFA'd - it was a miracle Atkins got anything at all for Sanchez.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 Kevin Gausman got DFA'd and he's a better pitcher than Sanchez. If we as fans are not hung up on 2016 anymore, then pretty good chance GM's around the league aren't either. Sanchez's value was likely little to nothing. You can still not be happy with the trade as Fisher was going to be out of options after the season so his value likely would have dropped the longer the Astros held on to him, but other than Stevenson (who looks good in A+ and I would have liked to hold on to him), there really wasn't much value going to the Astros. Of course the Astros could fix Sanchez (and Biagini) and make us look foolish, but Pete Walker hasn't made anyone better since he's been here, so chances are it wouldn't have mattered.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 Or you could look at it and say if Godley is being DFA'd - it was a miracle Atkins got anything at all for Sanchez. There is still a lot of life left in Sanchez' arm, where Godley barely sits at 90 with his fastball. Sanchez still has some workable tools that needs adjustment or a bullpen assignment. Godley does have a good curve ball and although his fastball is sub par, if he can locate it consistently, he still may find success. With the blister issues Sanchez has, he needs to come to the realization that he's better off in the pen.

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 Zack Wheeler and Kyle Gibson for me please. Those two would go a long ways to solidifying the rotation Wheeler Gibson Shoemaker Thornton Pearson Murphy Bouricki? Kay Merryweather Waguespack Not pretty, but at least you can envision a path to that becoming an average rotation. Of course, the bullpen is still a tire fire and needs to be addressed
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2019 Author Posted August 8, 2019 This is a weird article: ”Over an extended period, the consistently poor messaging (from the front office) seems disingenuous, allowing for grey areas in the public’s mind and dumb narratives to develop and persist, aided by zingers from acid-tongued columnists.”

You want to commit years and dollars to a guy who might spend half of it on the DL.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 (edited) 7/210. Your turn I'd do that in heart beat for cole. I would be in on Bumgarner too if the price was right. Honestly, my entire opinion of Shatkins would change if they landed Cole. Even if they signed a Bumgarner I would soften my stance. If they sign Gibson, nothing would change.
