A decent amount, actually? Players tend to be their most athletic when they are youngest. Defense, speed, and velocity can all peak at the very beginning of a player's career (sometimes before they even make MLB). Obviously some players improve defensively with experience (improvements from year 1 to year 2/3 are common) but some are their best in their young 20s.

 

The thing is, the plays Vladdy isn't making aren't because of athleticism. He's able to make some really impressive plays, but he doesn't seem to have the ability to do it consistently. I stand by my "he could be a passable 3B for a few years" opinion.

I think he has good "athleticism" for his size, good hands and arm... problem is his range is just so f***ing bad because of his massive girth that he will always be a poor defender.

I think it’s fair to assume that some of his inconsistency is because he’s out of shape.

He could certainly improve. I'd expect he would tbh. He's been a disaster though so far.
