Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2019 Posted May 16, 2019 What caused this lovers' quarrel? BTS didn't read trade notes and then reversed his own trade after accepting. NJH pretended to get mad and then BTS got actually mad and now NJH is just poking him for amusement because BTS has lost all semblance of a sense of humor and continues to be mad for no reason.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2019 Posted May 17, 2019 You're not allowed to question Shapiro or Atkins around here. Get with the program. Questioning Atkins is very fair at this point. The best moves the team made for 2016 were made by LaCava, and almost everything since the start of 2017 has been a dumpster fire aside from extending Smoak due to prospects acquired either under performing or flat out sucking. Plus the vet signings have been pretty bad (Morales, Pearce, Grandy, Garcia, etc). Then the one time he gives a long term extension it is to a player with a 5-6% walk rate for his career and a projected 2 ish WAR. Shapiro is fine. Atkins is definitely someone who deserves criticism (so far). The season is still young so if young players start turning it around, then opinions can change.

You can complain about the Morales, Pearce, Grandy and Garcia signings (add in the Happ trade) - but those are all pretty small peanuts man. In turn, I could say Galvis, Shoemaker, Sogard, Maile, Gaviglio, Woodman for A.Diaz trade, A.Diaz for Thornton trade, Giles trade, Grichuk trade, Pearce trade, draft picks, international signings, Oh signing & trade There's a quick list of solid moves that Atkins has made. All solid, yet more small peanut transactions. The obvious trend here is to make a ton of minor moves (some of which will work out, while others won't), clear payroll and rebuilding the farm system. It's pretty obviously they've made a conscious effort to hang tight until they're in a better position to strike. We should be talking about whether we agree with that approach or not. The real test will come when they start to make tangible moves that will impact the team long term. Until then - it's pretty inconclusive IMO.

Atkins might not be perfect but he certainly hasn't been nearly as bad as you're painting him. Past the major league team, you're also neglecting the fact that he's drafted very well.

Todd Verified Member Posted May 17, 2019 Posted May 17, 2019 (edited) People are going to bitch about who ever the blue jays general manager is. Just like in all three Toronto teams. And what they should do with the team. As of right now the blue jays prospects are a lot better then what it was three years ago, And is going to better after the draft. The actually team sucks but will get better. All good teams have to have a solid catcher, a good short, second baseball, and a solid center fielder and built from there. Edited May 17, 2019 by Todd

This is probably the most sensible post you've made Todd - spot on. This poem is nice and legible too.

Laika Community Moderator Posted May 17, 2019 Posted May 17, 2019 Those three change up whiffs were his only whiffs of the game on the pitch. He threw 10 changeups according to Brooks. It will be interesting to see if the pitch works moving forward. Historically he has only used the pitch about 6% of the time and it has not been good - pretty high offensive numbers against.

Past the major league team, you're also neglecting the fact that he's drafted very well. The drafting and international signings have been fine. I was talking about the big league transactions. That's been the dumpster fire for the most part. I won't be too hard on him for not trading vets sooner since that was likely ownership's call, but that's another blunder. Objectively I just don't see how we can view him in a positive light to this point, and I say that as someone who likes Shatkins. It's possible he's just not as good as we thought/hoped based on the Shapiro association. Don't even get me started on firing Gibby 2.0 just to replace him with the human bunt machine.

I agree with you re: Gibby 2.0 - although there's a solid chance that Gibby wasn't interested in managing a tanking team. You also continue to call all the moves a dumpster fire, even though I pointed out a number of moves that worked out very well (Woodman ended up being 1.6 WAR from A. Diaz + Trent Thornton, Grichuk trade) and we've picked up some very solid pieces when dumpster diving (Sogard, Shoemaker, Oh + other bullpen arms). I don't get it. Just because you keep saying it, doesn't make it true.
Barkerfan23 Verified Member Posted May 17, 2019 Posted May 17, 2019 Since taking over in 2016, I am finding it hard to name one quality player thats been brought in at the MLB level, that you could make the argument for as being above average. Grichuk comes to mind, but other than that not a single soul. Sanchez and Stroman are still AAs guys. Smoak was AAs, as was Vlad. Ken Giles I guess So Giles and Grichuk,
