could be going with a 7 man bullpen, maybe a reliever stubbed his toe(Norris?). I would be really happy for Tellez if he was on the roster. I think he deserves a shot to sink or swim.

I don't really want Tellez up here right now, unless something is up with Smoak. Replacing Morales with Tellez doesn't move the needle for me, I'd like that DH spot to rotate other players through, and I think Tellez handles 1B in AAA for the year so we can make a decision on extending Smoak or not.

I'm not usually too critical of the front office, but the fact that we didn't sign any of the good and cheap relievers this offseason is ridiculous. Injuries or not, turning to Daniel Hudson as your third best reliever is inexcusable.

That was my thought when they announced he was coming in. I thought, oh crap is Hudson really the third best reliever? The thought that I can't wait for Bud Norris to get back to the Jays is a scary thought.

You guys are just realizing our bullpen is complete garbage now?

Giles

Biagini

Hudson

Luciano

Guerra

Pannone

Gaviglio

Mayza

There's a lot of gascans in there.

Yeah the pen is probably going to be trash behind Giles, and the rotation is iffy as well.

Gonna be a long season, but that's what rebuilding is.

Be thankful, we aren't the O's

For the first time in years, the Jays have plenty of high end prospect talent, in addition to the high performance team and a focus on player development.

I know it is garbage, but we ignored guys like Adam Warren and Sergio Romo when they could have been had for the same price as Daniel Hudson. Why is Pannone the lefty out of the pen? Loup was still out there or guys like Duke or Diekman.

I'm just baffled as to why they ignored the most obvious weak spot on the team. It could have been addressed cheaply and not block any young players.

We were linked with Romo so it’s likely we at least had preliminary discussions with his agent, but TBF a player has to want to sign here.

Warren and Romo already signed for $1m more than Hudson, we would likely have had to pay even more to get them to join us instead of the teams they chose.

With all the dead money the budget might be tighter than we realise.

Atkins has said they're below their budget for the season, and I'm pretty sure he suggested they'd be looking to make strategic adds as opportunities arose.

I listed a lot of names so that someone wouldn't get stuck on that point. There were a lot of good relievers available for cheap and some would sign here. We surely could have retained Tyler Clippard for example.

I just don't understand what the front office was thinking. They got caught with their pants down and had to offer Hudson a major league deal when he had originally signed a minor league deal and got released because he sucks.

Hudson was only signed last minute because of the late injuries in the bullpen, and to Travis that opened up a spot on the roster.

In a rebuilding year IMO spending on the bullpen isn’t a very good idea - cheap short term deals are the way to go. It’s not like Clippard or any other reliever out there is going to add the 20 or so wins we’d need to be competitive.

Reliever injuries and poor performances are so unlikely. I don't know how they could have seen this coming.

Also, we were projected for something like 77 wins. Adding a win or two for 3 or 4 million was hardly a bad idea. Winning is always important in MLB because the draft is so volatile.

Exactly, 97-100 wins were the two wildcard places last year i.e. we are 20 or so wins away from being competitive.

Agree to disagree on the value of spending that kind of money on relievers to (potentially) add a few meaningless wins.

I'd like to see us grab Ben Taylor who was designated by Cleveland yesterday. Solid MiLB numbers, very little MLB exposure but projects to be a decent middle reliever.

Still worth it. Put faith in your scouts and development system. Also, picking higher gives you a lot more draft pool money to play with. Gives you so much more flexibility within the draft.

Not sure but doesn't it also impact your IFA signing bonus pool too (where you finish in the standings).

These are all things that if used correctly, help a rebuild tremendously.

In 2017 it was 84 for the wild card. In 2016 it was 89, 2015 86 or something. 2018 was the exception.

This team won't be competitive until, at least, 2020 (depending on the progress of Bo and Vlad, of course). Even then, the rotation is nowhere near that level, either.

All I want this season is for the Jays to play as well as they can, given their roster, and watch Vlad hit some dingers.

I can't understand why people who hate the team so much even watch the games.

I don't hate, I want to win. Won't happen this year, maybe in a few years from now with investment in player development and yes, drafting (the higher the better) and IFA investments.

Remember too well the treading water for 20 years. Plugging holes and hoping for multiple surprise performances very rarely works.

We are not a good bullpen away from competing so I’m not going to get upset that we’ve spent minimal amounts on relievers.

Besides, unless you’re signing truly elite relievers, they are so volatile that the difference between dumpster diving and mid tier contracts is unpredictable. For nearly every DFA candidate that doesn’t work, there’s a Dominic Leone that has a good season out of nowhere and vice versa for more expensive relievers.

What hate? I've been a fan since '85. Love this team. But I'm not gonna fool myself into believing something I don't believe. This is a bad team. Will they get better? Yes. They're headed in a very positive direction... But the record will be bad this season. They're just not a good ML club today.
