Who gives a sh$it about K rates and ground ball % etc when ACEucki had 11 QS in 17 starts... In this day and age with long pens and starters only expected to go 5, the days of Halladay's CG games long behind us, I want a pitcher who can give me a QS. A QS means that the team has a chance to win and reasonably supports the pen set up. Yes, Estrada had 11 QS also, but he had like 50 more innings and 11 more starts.

 

The fact of the matter is ACEucki was the best SP on the team in 2018. ACEoucki had 3 more QS than Happ while he was a BJ and Happ had 3 more starts.

 

Gaviglio had 4, QS in 24 starts.. Trying to compare ACEucki and Sam a Ray I was a Blue Jay I am, is nonsensical.

I've said numerous times the Jays have no chance to compete and when you look at Boston, Houston, and the Yankees they are miles behind. Cleveland most likely wins the central by default. Then there's the last wild card. I could see oakland taking a step back. I think Tampa might be my pick for the 5th playoff spot as I really like Morton. Tampa can't afford any injuries though.

 

I think it's a long shot, but it's spring training and the eternal optimist in me thinks there's still a very slim chance the Jays could get that last spot because I don't see a dominant number 5 team. The gap between the 4th and 5th wild card could be as much as 10 games though!

 

There's rumours of a Packers vs Raiders pre-season game coming to little old Saskatchewan, so I guess anything is possible.

We need to beat the 2nd wildcard's projection in WAR, approximately. Let's set that baseline at 40 WAR, the team currently projects at 29.6 as a team, with the Angels and A's the top two AL Wildcard teams in the 37-39 range.

 

Assuming no one underperforms, and looking at guys who could somewhat reasonably beat their projections to give us 10 more WAR, we'd need:

 

- Stroman provides 4 WAR (career year), Aaron Sanchez 3 -> +3 team WAR

- Matt Shoemaker and Ryan Borucki with 2 WAR each -> ~+2 team WAR

- the bullpen as a whole provides 4 WAR -> +2 team WAR

- Grichuk becomes a 3-3.5 WAR player, his backup is at least replacement level or just above -> +1 team WAR

- LF: McKinney + Teoscar platoon provide 2 WAR -> +1 team WAR

- SS: Freddy Galvis plays to his projection and Lourdes Gurriel adds 1 win here -> +0.5 team WAR

- 2B: Devon Travis gets knee replacement surgery, Brandon Drury isn't awful, Gurriel adds 1 win here -> +1 team WAR

- C: Danny Jansen really is that good, 3 WAR player -> +1 team WAR

 

If all or most of that happens to a reasonable level - say Sanchez is "only" a 2 win pitcher but Bo comes up mid-season and Gurriel plays FT at 2nd - then that's a second wildcard team. This assumes Vlad Jr.'s nuts projection is accurate, which doesn't factor in him being a potentially awful baserunner and/or defender, Pillar doesn't decline, and the bench and fifth starter logjam doesn't completely s*** the bed. Also the A's don't Moneyball their way to another big year and the Angels don't overperform the projections.

C: A full season of Danny Jansen who already put up a near .800 OPS last season.

 

LF: Billy McKinney crushed RHP in a small sample size last season, and he seems to be more competent than Teoscar defensively, so he should do pretty well next season if used correctly. Teoscar for all his faults defensively still put up a 107 wRC+ in his first full season which is impressive. He could take a step forward. Cavan Biggio and/or Brandon Drury could become factors here as well.

 

CF: Kevin Pillar does Kevin Pillar things and provides around 2 WAR and hacks his way to another underwhelming yet still not terrible ~85 wRC+. Beyond that, we also do have Anthony Alford, Dalton Pompey, and Jonathan Davis who are complete wildcards, but at the very least all 3 of them should be able to play a good defensive CF.

 

RF: Grichuk had a 134 wRC+ after his return from the DL last season. I don't think it's unreasonable to project him for a near 3 WAR season if he's healthy.

 

1B: Justin Smoak proved his breakout was real last season and puts up another 2-3 WAR season at 1B.

 

2B/SS: I'm lost on what to think about Lourdes Gurriel Jr., although players with his offensive profile have been successful in recent years (i.e. Rougned Odor, Javy Baez). I think he could put up a better season than Odor did in 2016, and he was worth 2.5 WAR that year. Galvis plays gold glove calibre defense at SS. Drury takes a step forward after a lost season (he's still only 26). Biggio and/or Bichette may come up if they're performing well.

 

3B: Vladdy should absolutely mash.

 

Pitching: We had historically bad pitching last season. The last time we as a staff had an ERA as bad as last year was 2003. Just by virtue of regression to the mean, we should be better. Stroman will be better. Sanchez will be better if he's healthy. Borucki has the ability to put up a 4.00 ERA, which would be perfectly reasonable for a #3 or #4. The upper minors starting depth we have, while not carrying any impactful superstar prospects, is mature and major league ready. The best course of action when it comes to arms is to stockpile as many as possible because history has shown us you never know who will break out at the major league level when it comes to pitchers. Sean Reid-Foley, Trent Thornton, Sam Gaviglio, Jacob Waguespack, David Paulino, T.J. Zeuch, Julian Merryweather, Thomas Pannone, Patrick Murphy, Hector Perez are all going to be in AA or above and ready to contribute in the rotation or in the bullpen.

 

Realistically, I have no problem predicting that we'll be one of the better offensive teams in the league next season. By wRC+, we were already a top 10 offensive team in the league last season. That's only going to get better with Vlad and a full season of Danny Jansen, as well as other guys taking a step forward. I think we're a Top 10 team in Runs Scored next season.

 

What I really question is the pitching and defense. A lot will have to go right for the pitching in order to compete.
