Richard was about a 0.5 WAR reliever per season in 2015-16. I think using him out of the pen and hoping for a good half season might net more in a mid season trade than anything he could do as a starter. If anything, starting him might destroy his value, especially in this division.

I didn’t mention it because I don’t think there’s any chance in hell he will come close to that again, especially in the AL East. He seems like someone who will get torched in this division. As a reliever I think he might be more valuable but the Jays might be more worried about the innings than the value/role.

 

For $1.5m and a nothing prospect, it’s not a bad deal.

This is a zero upside, zero downside move. The Jays could have signed Lynn for 3 for 30, but that came with both upside and downside risk. Instead we got a guy who won't help in the future, but he won't hurt the future either. I just don't see how the Jays are going to compete in 2 or 3 years unless they take a few chances. Maybe next year we will see some them gamble a bit more.

I wouldn't say zero upside. He's a cheap vet who could very plausibly post an ERA slightly under 4 with some good babip luck. That could return a McKinney or Teoscar type player at the deadline imo.

That is a very optimistic outlook. I would be shocked if he posts an ERA under 4 in the AL East and get player anywhere close to McKinney or Teoscar. I don't see how Richard would fit on a team in a playoff race. Who's going to trade for him. I could see shoemaker bringing a return, but not Richard.

He'd be more for the stretch drive, and could probably fill a slot in the pen beyond that if necessary. His ground ball ability would be the attraction, especially in a band box. He's projected at a 4.14 xFIP, and had 3.76 in 2017. It's not hard to imagine that a little babip luck would produce something like that.
