Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 Whoaa just saw this! Well that is one way to go...
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 Good, had to be done imo.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 11, 2018 Author Posted December 11, 2018 Tough pill to swallow but it's for the best
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 Does that officially close the book on the Marlins trade?
Ray Verified Member Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 I'm actually really surprised they just ate that $34M.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 So the Jays just paid him to walk, interesting.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 So the Jays just paid him to walk, interesting. 40m dollar sunk cost anyway. You can pay him 40M to take up a spot on the roster or pay him to walk...... With a young team it makes more sense to just get out of the contract and make room for someone else that can help the team.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 11, 2018 Author Posted December 11, 2018 I'm actually really surprised they just ate that $34M. 38M I'm seeing Damn that's a lot of cash. Plus what they've already paid him this year to NOT play
Sorrow Verified Member Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 Roster spot is more valuable than someone who likely isn't an MLB caliber player anymore.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 I'm actually really surprised they just ate that $34M. 38 with the option buyout, no?

Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 In AA we trust!! We would have never had 2015, 2016 without Tulo. What do the fans care, they want the team to spend money, they did. It worked, the back end was part of the deal, can't get something for nothing. We could have had Reyes and been paying a shitload and never have gotten to the ALDS.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 Making the upcoming Machado signing even more expensive
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 Does that officially close the book on the Marlins trade? Buehrle - retired Johnson - walked via FA Reyes - moved in Tulo trade, Tulo was just released Bonifacio - traded for cash considerations Buck - included in Dickey trade So, yes, the book is closed.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 Making the upcoming Machado signing even more expensive Don't forget Kikuchi...
tercet Verified Member Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 I'm sorry but can someone please explain why this move is good/makes sense? All it does is open a spot for Gurribabip, and he is not good at baseball, he is infact bad at baseball, with a very small chance of maybe being ok. It only makes sense if Tulo is too injured/probably will never play again. A 34 year old Tulo (if he is healthy enough to play) will outperform Gurribabip 75%~ of the time in 2019.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 Do we still have to pay his buyout since he was released before his final year?

The Blue Jays won the AL East by 6 games in 2015. Tulo played 41 games that year in the regular season and was basically a defensive specialist. He was also terrible in the playoffs that year (and in the 2016 playoffs). Tulo didn't move the needle whatsoever for this team. His acquisition was a massive mistake.

I'm assuming they think he's too broken to play a viable shortstop, and don't think he'll be content as a bench player.
Carp12 Verified Member Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 If they’re willing to eat that money then surely they would/could release Morales

That is the only thing that makes sense, but instead Atkins bullshits everyone non-stop about Gurribabip being a viable SS (he isn't, nor is he a 2B,).

NO WAY the Jays win the AL East or the ALDS without Tulo.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 Yeesh, what a horrible situation. So much dead money. Atkins must REALLY think he's cooked. Otherwise it would have made more sense to bring him back as a backup IF to see if we could get a dead cat bounce.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 11, 2018 Posted December 11, 2018 Does the $38m count against 2019 payroll? Not sure how that works. If it's off the 2020 books, then that is huge. Even more payroll room next year.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
