I have a lot of trouble believing in Luke Weaver as a legit starter...so yes s*** return. With that said Carson Kelly is a starting catcher right now with an upside bat. Give it 5 years and he's the best catcher in the history of the franchise.

Isn't this just a matter of them rebuilding and need to add assets? Maximize the return for Goldy as there's no point keeping him through a rebuild and/or risking injury or him signing elsewhere?

 

I kinda think this is the market for good players without much control. Teams aren't giving up prospects anymore.

I think if they they were serious about keeping Goldy around and/or if Goldy wanted to stay, he would have been signed to an extension already. Considering it's only 1 year for Goldy, I don't think they did that bad. They got some controllable and cheap assets that are ready to contribute at the MLB level. Look at the JD situation this past season. Blue Jays pretty much got nothing for him after holding onto him for most of the 2018 season. I think we're seeing that players with only one year of control left aren't going to get the type of elite talent via trade.

The market for 1B is garbage, none of the top tier teams needed one, and they're getting two MLB ready pieces with decent upside plus some other minor assets. I'm probably the high man on Weaver but for one year of Goldy I think this is a perfectly fine return.

Combined WAR between Carson Kelly and Luke Weaver could possibly could match Goldy (if we have Goldy at around 5 WAR next season). I don't think Goldy is a 6-7+ WAR player anymore. Alongside, Kelly and Weaver are under club control and are at a cheap price for the next several years, whereas the D'Backs likely weren't going to re-sign Goldy to begin with. I like the deal for both sides to be honest. The Cards are in a position to win now, and still have a solid farm system even after this trade. They could afford trading those pieces for one year of Goldy. For Arizona, they get two young MLB ready pieces under club control and at a cheap price. Both aren't anything special (Weaver more of a mid-rotation type starter at best; Kelly has upside to be a Top-10 catcher in baseball). Arizona probably could also sign a cheap 1B this offseason or trade for one (e.g. Justin Smoak) and still be somewhat decent.

I think you have to get back at least one young player who is more of a sure thing (if a young player can even be a sure thing). But Weaver/Kelly both have too many question marks to really love this trade from ARZ's standpoint in my opinion. I mean, the Cards didn't even have much leverage here as both Weaver and Kelly had a seemingly limited future in the organization.

 

ARZ also has Miroglio and Varsho in the minors and both could be big league catchers.

 

If Goldy had 2+ years left, it's an awful return. With only 1 year left, his age and the chance of re-signing him very unlikely, I don't think Arizona did that bad. Not crazy about the return as well, but I think its decent. Likely don't get this type of deal at the July trade deadline.

and trading for Kelly likely allows for that. I think his athleticism and bat will be always be beyond his timelines of a catcher. Have you ever heard of a catcher who's legs are miles ahead of his arm.

His scouting report is definitely unique. I absolutely agree that it makes sense to add a young MLB catcher in Kelly and then move Varsho off the position to try and get his bat (and legs) in the lineup sooner.

Return is fine, more surprising is who he was traded to. Cards have some holes and Molina will be 37 come July. This is a very un-Cards like move.
